Try Sullivan instead

This book is poor. Try Michael Sullivan's books instead. This book doesn't show you how to do the majority of the problems. I'm mostly flipping through the pages, trying to find the techniques, formulas, etc... but they are not there. I need this book for class (homework), but I'm using Sullivan's books to actually learn the material. If you have to use this book (like me), don't get discouraged. The material isn't difficult (and it's actually enjoyable) if you learn it step by step. This book, unfortunately, is another representation of mathematicians trying to explain easy material in a needlessly complicated way. Get another book before thinking you're not a math person.

Gordon Moore, Intel's cofounder, once observed that the density of transistors per square inch was doubling every year. Subsequently, the pace dropped a little and the doubling was perceived to be once every 18 months instead of once every 12 months. According to industry analysts, however, the enterprise storage industry is still beating Moore's law in its growth.

One estimate is that in the next few years, more data will be generated than has been created since the dawn of known history! Regardless of the exact details, one must concede that Windows servers play an important role in the enterprise storage industry. Therefore, knowledge of the storage aspects of the Windows operating system will prove to be invaluable. This book is a humble attempt to meet this perceived need.

A word or two about the conventions used in this book would be helpful. The book uses the phrases "Windows NT" and "Windows Server family" interchangeably. Both are used when a feature that is common across all of Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, and Windows Server 2003 is being discussed. When necessary, a particular version of the operating system is mentioned--for example, Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003--and these terms refer to particular versions of the operating system rather than to the operating system in a generic sense.

This book has been written for those who are somewhat conversant with computer systems and the IT industry and who are looking to further their knowledge of the storage industry in general and of Windows NT architecture details as they apply to storage devices. To be clear, this book is about enterprise storage, and consumer storage details are described cursorily, if at all. The book attempts to strike a balance between catering to the software professional who knows nothing about storage and the professional who is somewhat conversant with storage but looking for good insights into Windows NT storage architecture.If the reader comes away with just one idea after reading this book, it should be a deep appreciation of the steady acceleration of enterprise storage-related features that each succeeding release of the Windows NT operating system has brought and will bring to market.

This book attempts to strike a balance among the following aspects:

* Making information available in a timely manner.
* Providing detailed information and respecting intellectual property rights. The book covers several software development kits (SDKs) that are available only on a nondisclosure agreement (NDA) basis. Hence the coverage of these kits has been necessarily limited to what is already publicly available information. I have erred on the side of caution, preferring to provide only information that I know is publicly available, but I have added value to this often cryptic and hard-to-find information by providing the necessary explanations.
* Providing information on upcoming Windows NT releases and not just "stale" information about past Windows NT releases. Such forward-looking information is necessary for a proper appreciation of the clear focus that Microsoft has devoted to enterprise storage in the Windows NT operating system. The obvious risk is that plans are subject to change. The book clearly mentions when a particular aspect is related to forthcoming Windows NT releases.

A word of caution is in order here. This book makes some forward-looking statements in the form of expected features in forthcoming releases of the Windows NT operating systems. Microsoft has repeatedly made it clear that the only guaranteed way of identifying features in an operating system release is to look for them after the actual release. No matter what is said in venues such as trade shows and seminars, there is no guarantee that features tentatively discussed will ever ship, let alone ship with a particular version of the operating system. No material plans of any kind should be based on these guesses.

Any reader who does not appreciate the "Safe Harbor statement" nature of the previous paragraph is highly encouraged to study (and not just read) it again.

The book begins with an overview of Windows NT architecture, including the Windows NT I/O subsystem and storage driver architectures. Chapter 1 is an attempt to condense the vast amount of information purveyed in the excellent Inside Windows NT books (Microsoft Press), and it is intended for readers who do not have the time to peruse the book in its entirety.

Chapter 2 describes direct-attached storage, which was historically the first choice for storage.

Chapter 3 describes network-attached storage, the next major milestone in enterprise storage. The Windows NT network stack is explained in detail, from the point of view of the storage professional.

Chapter 4 describes Fibre Channel storage area networks, a technology that is perceived to be rapidly maturing now and still holding its own in the face of upcoming new technology in the form of iSCSI and InfiniBand.

Chapter 5 covers the basics of backup and restore, and the new volume shadow copy service (also popularly referred to as snapshots) in Windows Server 2003.

Chapter 6 covers file systems and disk virtualization, with particular reference to Windows NT. Cluster file systems are also discussed.

Chapter 7 discusses storage management in general and the various storage management solutions as they apply to Windows NT.

Chapter 8 covers new technologies in storage, particularly IP storage (which attempts to meld storage and IP networks), as well as InfiniBand.

Chapter 9 discusses Windows Server 2003 and Windows 2000 natively supported solutions to provide high-availability services (including failover, failback, and load balancing) using multiported dual host bus adapters (HBAs) in a Windows NT server. The chapter also discusses more mundane high-availability and high-performance solutions, such as RAID.

Although the rest of this book is organized into chapters based on technologies, Chapter 10 is organized by Windows NT releases. Irrespective of the storage technology that is being discussed, Chapter 10 traces the storage features as they appeared in Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows Server 2003, and expected features in Windows releases to come.

Excellent Reference for Windows Server Storage

Given that there are not many references dealing with Windows Server Storage, this book has value for the developer in understanding the nuts and bolts of the technology as well as the administrator in learning how this technology and the operating system interoperate. Dilip Naik succeeds quite well in both areas.
The detail in the hardware requirements, types of devices, communication protocols - all important in understanding the technology if you are going to administer or program for it. How it communicates with Windows and the driver model is of particular interest to me as a Systems Engineer - if it's not functioning properly, I have to know - in detail, how it talks to the OS.
Eliminating layers is the only way to narrow down the possibilities. The diagrams and the associated detail of the kernel, driver, protocol and disk layers are invaluable to the topic at hand.
In the journey through this book, you start with a basic introduction to Windows NT and Windows NT storage devices. This is the basis for all that comes, but may be familiar to many who deal with driver and kernel technology. Next is Direct Attached Storage, Network Attached Storage, and an intro to Fibre Channel SAN. No storage technology is complete without discussion of backup and restoration. And, file systems are an important treatment in the book as well.
There is a chapter on storage management - and for an administrator, clearly this is the area in which the book is light. Much more could have been done with this, but the focus of the book is not on the administrator - but slanted more to aiding the developer in understanding the technology.
IP Storage, iSCSI, and InfiniBand are discussed, as is the Windows spin on the implementations. High Availability and RAID options are expanded upon, as well as some third party options.
Finally is a discussion of storage features by Windows version release, Windows NT, 2000 and Server 2003. Included is a short discussion of what's missing, and a discussion of futures.
Naik does an admirable job in delivering a book dealing with complex technology and attempting to provide information in which infrastructure technologists as well as developers can glean value from it. Though there is no code in the book, that's not the goal - it's about the technology.
If you're looking for a good reference in Windows Storage Technologies (and the supporting hardware, firmware, and software), this is one that should find it's way onto your shelf.

Nice introduction to Windows Storage Features

This was kind of book which I was looking for sometime. Generally, one finds lot of books on Storage Technologies, SAN, Fibre Channel etc, written with system administrative perspective. This book is the next step. It gives nice technical intrduction of storage technologies and how they have been implemented on Windows Server. It is good resource for sys admins and management folks who want to understand storage feature in greater detail. The language is nice and easy. Though, sometime you feel the flow is not very smooth and its jerky sometimes. It covers pretty much all the storage features available on Windows. I believe this book is a good step in the right direction. It is technical to some level but obviously not enough for a system level programmer. Some of the details are missing( which might be intentional). Topics need to exploded further so that it can serve as a great reference. The book does not point to some of the challenges facing Windows Server Storage

I found certain chapters way above my head ( I am a software person, not hardware) but other chapters, especially the ones dealing with SANs and RAID configurations) incredibly useful. It answered a lot of questions I had on the different RAID configurations

Rarely have I come across a book or manual that has been as infomative as this one. The book covers in detail and clarity of how to do accomplish the most basic and most advanced functions that final cut 4 has to offer. In addition, all the pictures and illustrations are great and easy to understand.

The answer to every question, "it's in there!"

I'm sold on the Apple's Pro Training series for Final Cut Pro. Final Cut Pro 4 and Final Cut Pro Advanced, offer training very economically. If you work independently and learn well from text books, these two offer clear instructions that can be trusted and followed with confidence. By following them carefully, I accomplish complicated tasks, such as animating titles, easily. Although, there are a few misplaced characters there aren't any missing words. By following Apple's lesson plan, I learned how to use tools in FCP. Some of them are so clever they're difficult to comprehend. The slip edit tool, for instance, lets you change which portion of the source file will be shown in a clip without lengthening the sequence. It took awhile before I could understood what was going on. It wasn't like anting I'd encountered before. How to operate the levers, buttons, and bells is important but these two books also teach how to make movies. For example, Final Cut Pro 4 describes how to slip the video into synch with the audio tracks rhythm pattern: how to finesse the leopard to move his head at a specific time in the music. After completing many tutorials in these books, I appreciate documentaries more. I've heard it referred to as a mid-range video editor but I can't foresee needing more power to edit my DV. At first I wondered why LiveType came bundled with Final Cut and why it took up so much room on my hd. After building the example projects, in chapters 19 and 20 of Final Cut Pro Advanced, however, I don't care how much room it needs. My motion titles impressed everyone saw them. Even experienced FinalCut Pro users may learn something about LiveType by reading this book. These books cover color correction, working with film, project management, nesting sequences, multi-track trims -- I'm reminded of the jingle about a good spaghetti sauce, the answer to every question, 'it's in there! I'll be using these two books, Final Cut Pro 4 and Final Cut Pro Advanced, for a long time. Tip: The lessons will go smoother if you read ahead.

Excellent book!

A very clear definition of how to do nearly everything in FCP4. Having only the knowledge of how to do a simple cut, I was able to follow the book and understand it. I'm still in high school, so you know if I can do this, you can as well. The book contains with it a DVD that offers 8.3 gigabytes of lessons that you give you all the shots you need, and then you open the book and the book explains what to do with the shots given to you. Depending on your current skill level, you can skip any lessons that you already know. The book does require some knowledge of the interface, like the canvas, viewer, browser, and timeline, and how they all function. I recommend the book to anyone that wants to learn FCP4 very well.

Trigonometry is fun

I first learned trigonometry 26 years ago, and am currently a tutor in a Tutoring Center where math and English are the primary calls for our assistance. We started using this book on Trigonometry by Lial, Hornsby and Schneider last year, and it has been a real aid to all of us.

The chapters are designed with brief overviews, 'Chapter Openers', at the beginning of each. There are sample exercises in the explanations, as well as exercises in the problem sets keyed to specific application of examples. There are summary exercises that give review of mixed concepts, pull-quote boxes (here called 'Function Boxes') to highlight the reference aspect of the text, and useful chapter reviews to the same.

One thing that stands out about this text from the one I used so many years ago is the colour aspect. There are pictures, multi-coloured graphs and illustrations, and a general feel to the book that makes it visually worthwhile to look at. This book also takes advantage of the increasing sophistication of calculators - again, back when I took trigonometry, there were tables of data in the back for looking things up, since calculators (such as they were) had only add/subtract/multiply/divide functions.

The chapters go in a fairly standard pattern for trigonometry. Chaptes progress from basic Trigonometric Functions, defining triangular and angular ideas. This continues more in depth with Acute Angles and Right Angles, then proceeds to Circular Functions, introducing Radian Measures in for good measure. The fourth chapter introduces graphing ideas for the circular functions (sine, cosine, etc.), while the sixth chapter introduces the idea of the inverse circular and trigonometric functions. Other chapters include trigonometric identities (this always seemed to me to be like geometry or logic using trig functions), vectors, complex numbers, polar equations, exponential and logarithmic functions. Many of these concepts have direct application in engineering and other sciences.

This book is also geared for students who will be advancing on to calculus, and gives marginal notes on how trigonometry is used in calculus (so as to pre-empt the question, 'when am I ever going to use this?').

Actually, I found trigonometry to be among the more enjoyable math courses I ever took; together with geometry, it confirmed an early love of the discovery of patterns and symmetry in the very fabric of existence. This book reminds me of those early days of exploring ideas, and it is a pleasure to share these same ideas with new students via this text.

Makes trigonometry easy to learn

If you are looking for a thin book that will help you easily understand trigonometry without complicated jargon and unnecessary fluff, this is the book for you.

However, If you want a deep understanding of trigonometry and want to know how to properly explain theories and equations to others, I would highly recommend getting a reference book to supplement this book.

Lies, Lies and more lies....

I bought this book because I need it for my His. class. From chap. # 1, I wanted to drop the class JUST BECAUSE THIS TBOOK.

Chapter 1: Referring to slaves and Native Americans "Within their own families and COMMUNITIES they made choices..."

My questions are

How many Slaves had choices??? What community of slaves?? Welcome to the Black Slave Community. The book is a joke

Slaves were not human for their owners. They were an expensive item. If the owner wanted to sell a Black baby, they were able to do it because the baby was the owner's property. The parents of this baby didn't have the "CHOICE" to say THIS IS MY CHILD. HE/SHE DOESN'T BELONGS TO YOU, SO YOU CAN NOT SELL HER/HIM. I think that this book and the authors do not respect Native Americans, African Americans and the history.

Also, the trade of Europeans with Native Americans . The book reads, "that the Indian was 'making sport of us Europeans.'" We, the people from America (the whole continent), lost everything we had in our trades. We didn't know the value of our gold, and we traded it for glass beads. So, What sport are we talking here? How this author want us to believe that we, people from America, fooled the Europeans?

The Rational Unified Process: An Introduction is a good overview of Rational's prescription for whole-project health. The process is unified as in "Unified Field Theory." Thesis, Antithesis, and Synthesis, (or Booch, Jacobson, and Rumbaugh, as they are known today) twine in a celestial dance to the Spheres, Rectangles, Clouds, and stray pointers that make up UML and its increasingly ambitious extensions, additions, and heroic leaps of faith.

Rational visualizes the elements and modalities of code and projects in a fashion found compelling by increasing numbers of corporate customers. It's a vision embodied in several software suites, including the eponymous Rational Unified Process, for which this book is designed to serve as the introduction. Face it, you are going to run into Rational on the job. This volume is a good place to get know about it.

The book is not an independent assessment of Rational. Editor Philippe Kruchten is lead architect of the Rational Unified Process product. A fine, readable introduction

This book is an introduction to the Rational Unified Process (RUP). It is suitable for readers who have never heard of RUP before and for readers who have little experience with thoughtful analysis of software lifecycles. (I think it's also very useful as a quick, easy-to-read overview of RUP for more advanced readers, but you can read about that use of the book in other reviews.)
I teach Computer Science at Florida Tech, including undergraduate and graduate courses in software testing. Krutchen provides a thoughtful but very readable, persuasive discussion of risks associated with different software lifecycles. In my experience as a teacher, my students' ability to appreciate differences among lifecycles and analyze them critically is significantly boosted by study and discussion of Krutchen. Accordingly, I require my students to read the relevant section of his book, they have detailed small-group discussions of it, and it often appears on their exam.
This book is an introduction. It doesn't address all of the problems with RUP. It doesn't cover all of the areas of RUP equally well. It won't make any reader an expert in the process or its favored practices. It won't persuade someone who doesn't like RUP that they should like. What it does do is expose the reader to the thinking and practices that make up this particular approach to software engineering.
This book is much deeper than marketing fluff, but not so deep as to lose a junior reader. As a teacher, I am delighted to have materials like this available.
(Disclosure: a little bit of my work has been included in RUP, and I have developed a course for Rational on software testing within the Rational process. However, I identify more with the agile development / XP community than with the RUP community. In any case, the question that I'm interested in answering in this review is not whether RUP is any good -- it has its good points and its weaknesses -- but rather whether Krutchen's introduction to RUP is a fair and useful introduction to that subject matter. My conclusion is that it is.)

A fine book despite some reservations

An excellent book well organized and generally well written. Recommended either to learn about Rational Corporation's Rational Unified Process (RUP) or even just to get a general acquaintance with current ideas about software development methodology.
Mr. Kruchten advocates describing a software product with various summary, abstract views. In this book, he practices what he preaches by giving just the "architectural" view of RUP, whose in-depth treatment would not fit in just 300 pages. There are seventeen chapters divided into two sections. A reader interested only in RUP's distinctive features may skip chapters 1 and 14-17.
Section I comprising chapters 1-6 provides the motivation (software development best practices) and the dominant themes (architecture and use cases) of RUP, describing it also along two main dimensions: the dynamic dimension of phase and iteration and the static dimension of workflow.
Section II dedicates a chapter to each of RUP's nine workflows. There are two final chapters, one with sample plans for iterations in different project phases and one discussing how to implement RUP in a development organization. There are two useful appendices, a dictionary of acronyms, a glossary, and a quite helpful annotated bibliography.
In RUP a workflow is an interrelated set of activities producing a cohesive subset of the artifacts of a software development project. The chapters describing workflows vary somewhat in length and quality, but they all follow the same pattern: (1) start with guiding principles; (2) describe the activities, workers, and artifacts of the workflow; (3) conclude with some comments on tool support (a little marketing for Rational Corporation's tool suite). The best workflow chapters: Project Management, Business Modeling, Test, Configuration and Change Management.
The high recommendation comes not without some reservations.
Architectures are important in RUP, but Chapter 5, "An Architecture-centric Process," garbles this message by describing architectures as mere derivatives of "complete" system descriptions (called "models"): "Architecture is what remains when you cannot take away any more things and still understand the system and explain how it works (p. 82)." Again, " . . . models are complete representations of the system, whereas an architectural view focuses only on what is architecturally significant (p. 89)." Finally, "Architectural views are like slices cut through the various models, illuminating only the important, significant elements . . . (p. 90)."
These explanations fail to recognize that architectures come first. Architectures are constraints that determine subsequent design and construction of the system. They are primary, not derivative, not mere views of models. Fortunately, RUP recognizes the primacy of architecture even if these explanations do not.
These explanations also fail to recognize that an architecture is a complete and distinct model in its own right. They are out of harmony with the book's own (wordy) definition of architecture, which includes "The selection of structural elements and their interfaces by which the system is composed . . . (p. 84)." So when the elements and interfaces have been defined, the architecture is complete, right? It escapes this reader how architectures can be inherently less complete than models (whatever they are), when there is not even any one model that completely describes a system (see p. 81).
The relationship that Chapter 5 describes between architectures and models is very similar to that described in Chapter 10 between the analysis model and the design model. Mr. Kruchten limits the value of retaining the analysis model as a distinct artifact: "Generally, there is one design model . . .. The upper layers of this model describe the application-specific, or more analysis-oriented, aspects . . . In some companies-those in which systems live for decades or there are many variants of the system-a separate analysis model has proved useful (p. 175)."
Generally, companies that plan to stay in business DO expect their systems to live for decades-as do companies that spend millions of dollars using RUP to build them. As for "the extra work required to ensure that the analysis and design models remain consistent (p. 175)," the right tool can make all the difference. Anyone familiar with tools for database design (Erwin, for example) knows that they provide extensive facilities for maintaining separate, consistent analysis (logical) and design (physical) models. The tools offered by Rational Corporation, however, do NOT provide such a facility. Could Mr. Kruchten be tailoring the methodology to fit the limitations of the tool that his sponsor sells?
Compare his attitude toward the analysis model with that of another author in the Addison-Wesley Object Technology Series. Martin Fowler in his UML Distilled says, " . . . it is very important to separate the specification perspective and the implementation perspective (p. 52)." Mr. Fowler uses different terminology, but he is saying essentially that the analysis model ("specification perspective") is valuable as an artifact distinct from the design model ("implementation perspective").
Despite these issues-which might profitably have been discussed at greater length-this fine book admirably fulfills its purpose.

Much better read than Unified Software Development Process

This book is a much better read than the generic process described by the book named The Unified Software Development Process (UP). The Rational Unified Process (RUP) is a specific instance of the more generic UP. The RUP can be tailored to an organization or project and is considered a product offering by Rational Corp. Many big technology firms are using RUP to include major companies from Telecommunications, Transportation, Aerospace, Defense, Manufacturing, Financial Institutions, and System Integratrors. Some of the major well known companies include: Xerox, Intel, Oracle, Lockheed-Martin, Merrill Lynch, MCI and Charles Schwab.
This book is easy to follow and very informative about a modern user-case driven, architecture centric, iterative/incremental development process. After an introduction to the whole process structure consisting of a Conception Phase, Elaboration Phase, Construction Phase and Transition Phase, each succeeding chapter covers a single workflow such as Business Modeling, Requirements Management, Analysis & Design, Implementation, Testing, Deployment, Configuration & Change Management, Project Management and Environment.
This book is actually an enjoyable read and makes the reader aware of what it takes to develop software using an object-oriented software development process using a proven methodology.

Essential reading for anybody who wishes to influence policy.

A Great Introduction, Plenty of Examples

If you are using this book as an introduction it is a great way to start out. It familiarizes you with the various key policy institutions within the Execuitive Office and helps you eliminate unnecessary wording in briefing documents such as memorandums.

The authors have experience within the Clinton White House so there are several case studies that come from real issues that they dealt with, e.g. Welfare Reform.
