About the Author
Allyn Washington was born and educated in Connecticut, where he also began teaching at Trinity College, his alma mater. He taught at Boise Junior College (now Boise State University) before joining the newly forming Dutchess Community College, in Poughkeepsie, New York, where he began writing "Basic Technical Mathematics," At the time, technical mathematics did not have a text that gave students the math they needed to successfully achieve their goals in the technical mathematics program. Al decided to write a book that specifically aligned itself with the technical programs these students were taking. He wanted his text to be flexible, allowing instructors to teach in ways that would most benefit their students. Through his vision and determination, Allyn Washington created the "Technical Mathematics" series. Mario F. Triola is a Professor Emeritus of Mathematics at Dutchess Community College, where he has taught statistics for over 30 years. Marty is the author of "Elementary Statistics, 10th Edition," "Elementary Statistics Using Excel,"" Elementary Statistics Using the TI-83 84 Plus Calculator," and he is a co-author of "Biostatistics for the Biological and Health Sciences,"" Statistical Reasoning for Everyday Life," and "Business Statistics," He has written several manuals and workbooks for technology supporting statistics education. Outside of the classroom, Marty has been a speaker at many conferences and colleges. His consulting work includes the design of casino slot machines and fishing rods, and he has worked with attorneys in determining probabilities in paternity lawsuits, identifying salary inequities based on gender, analyzing disputed election results, analyzingmedical data, and analyzing medical school surveys. Marty has testified as an expert witness in New York State Supreme Court. The Text and Academic Authors Association has awarded Mario F. Triola a "Texty" for Excellence for his work on "Elementary Statistics," Ellena Reda is the Department Head of the Mathematics, Physical and Computer Sciences Department at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, NY. She began her career at DCC in 1988 as an adjunct instructor. Ellena received her Bachelor's degree in Mathematics at Marist College, her Master's degree in Mathematics/Education from the State University of New York at New Paltz, and an advanced graduate certificate in Educational Computing from the University at Stony Brook. She is the program coordinator at DCC for the Verizon Next Step Program, has served as the program's mathematics curriculum leader, and has taught a variety of courses in this technical program. Ellena is a member of the American Mathematical Association of Two Year Colleges. She was a writing team member of the NSF - AMATYC Math Works Project. She was the principal investigator for a National Science Foundation Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics Scholarship (CSEMS) Grant and a team leader/teacher leader for the State Professional Development Collaborative, an NSF/ATE Grant. In spring 2005 she was named a Regional Teacher of the Year by the New York State Technology Education Association. Ellena has co-authored the "Excel Manual" that accompanies "Elementary Statistics," 8th, 9th and 10th editions written by Mario Triola. In her spare time Ellena enjoys golfing, running, and reading. In 2003 she ran her first marathon to raise money for the AmericanStroke Association. Since then she has run 2 marathons and 3 half-marathons. She has three grown children and lives locally with her husband.

Practical and Easy to read.

I am using this text to teach statistics at a large public University level. This is my first time with this text, and although only half way through the book, I find it is very well written and interesting. I believe that anyone who can add subtract, multiple and divide can learn statistics from this book. The text introduces fundamental concepts at a level anyone can understand, and then leads the reader to progressively more complex but practical applications using mostly real data from biology and medicine. One of the great advantages of this text is the impressive number of problems for every section. As the problems become more complex, the reader is still asked question that reinforce the fundamentals and the take home message. A students solutions manual has the answers and solutions to the odd problems, which is also very useful. Although, not a major selling point for me, the print, binding, font, layout, etc are all excellent. I've given this book a critical eye, and thus far can find no major criticism and plenty to praise.

The SEVENTH edition of a classic fiction-craft book

In the preface to the seventh edition, Burroway notes that "the idea of a text for writing fiction is itself problematic. Unlike such subjects as math and history, where a certain mass of information needs to be organized and conveyed, the writing of fiction is more often a process of trial and error--the learning is perpetual and, paradoxically, the writer needs to know everything at once. If a text is too prescriptive, it's not true to the immense variety of possibilities; if it's too anecdotal, it may be cheering but is unlikely to be of use." Excellent criteria, emerging from the author's decades of writing and teaching experience. And this book succeeds: it's engaging and it isn't too prescriptive.

Comparing the contents of previous editions, I see that Burroway has experimented with different chapter sequences. In the sixth edition, plot discussion began in chapter 2 (page 30); in the seventh edition, plot discussion is relegated to chapter 7 (page 259). Very well, as the writer "needs to know everything at once" anyway, such experimentation could lead to a better text. Burroway's experimentation is, for the most part, based on the feedback she has regularly received from instructors of creative writing. Moreover, the new sequence reflects the author's emphasis on literary fiction, which, she notes "differs from genre fiction fundamentally in the fact that the former is character-driven, the latter plot-driven" (page 413).

The author clearly prefers literary fiction over genre fiction. (In her definition, genre fiction comprises detective story, science fiction, fantasy fiction, romance, adventure, spy, horror, and thriller.) "Writing literary fiction can teach you how to write good genre fiction, writing genre fiction does not teach you how to write good literary fiction--does not teach `how to write,' by which I mean how to be original and meaningful in words." Agreed. But I wonder why the book is not titled Writing Literary Fiction.

The seventh edition, like the previous editions, includes more than twenty-five short stories, most of them by contemporary writers such as Tobias Wolff, Joyce Carol Oates, and Charles Baxter. These three stories were also in the sixth edition. However, the seventh edition has dropped short-short stories altogether. I found writing short-shorts as a fast-track to learning basic fiction-writing skills. (Inspired by the short-shorts in the sixth edition, I wrote five short-shorts, all of which have been accepted for publication in ZYZZYVA literary magazine's August 2007 issue.) The seventh edition's major short-coming is the dropping of short-shorts.

For teaching yourself to write literary fiction, I recommend: beginning with Burroway's "Imaginative Writing: The Elements of Craft"; next Burroway's "Writing Fiction: A Guide to Narrative Craft"; followed by Sarah Stone and Ron Nyren's "Deepening Fiction: A Practical Guide for Intermediate and Advanced Writers." Steep price but worth it.

This book covers every subject a serious writer of fiction should know. I bought an earlier edition of it as a student back in 1986 when took my first class in creative writing. I also used it as a text during the limited time I taught novel writing in continuing education at NMSU-C in 2000. There are other sources out there that address the issue of plotting for novels more effectively. But this is the absolute best source for the overall subject of narrative craft, bar none.

An Excellent AP Textbook! Got me a 5!

I purchased this textbook to self study for the AP US history exam and can say I was thoroughly satisfied. The text and prose is very well written, you never need to "hunt" for the main point. The information is incredibly good; besides highly detailed resources in the main text, each chapter features an in-depth essay on a certain subject, many of which appeared as multiple choice questions on the 2005 AP exam. Most of the text reads like a detailed story, and keeps one's interest quite well. A note of warning: the authors write this at the college level and students with limited vocabularies may have some difficulty comprehending the text.

Political cartoons and other visual media are very apt and many of the cartoons in the book were the same ones that appeared on my AP and SAT in multiple choice questions.

Some reviewers have complained of a liberal skew, I could certainly see how they would arrive at that conclusion. Chapter titles like "Triumph of the White Man's Democracy" and labeling Columbus as an "invader" seem a bit presumptuous. Additionally, the book tends to put a disproportionate emphasis on women/minorites, however, so does the AP examination. Divine seems not to be so much as liberal, but as challenging commonly held assumptions. For instance, he makes it very clear that FDR's New Deal plan did nothing to bring America out of the Great depression, it only made the period until WWII bearable for some. Divine is quick to criticize the failures of Wilson's 14 points and the economic crisis imposed by the Carter administration. Either way, Divine has facts to back up his statements, facts which can easily be incorporated into AP essays requiring an opinion.

Overall this is an excellent resource, and I highly recommend it, as it got me a 5 on the AP, and 780 on the SAT US History exam.

This is a very nice textbook, and is meant for those who have already had a background in history. I use it for my AP class and really like it. The book reads very well - unlike a lot of history books it doesn't use complex grammar and spelling to sound sophisticated - and has a lot of detail as well as a liberal and well-founded opinion; in addition it has very good diagrams, illustrations, and a chronology for each chapter. It is a real book - there are no built in study guides, self review, or page-consuming explainations of simple concepts that most textbooks have. I reccomend this for all who wish to seriously study history, but not for those who want to skim a book for a quick review.

The Brief Sixth Edition shares the goal of its parent text: to present a clear, relevant, and balanced history of the United States as an unfolding story of national development, from the days of the earliest inhabitants to the present. The goal of the abridgement is to produce a condensation true to the original in all its dimensions-a miniaturized replica or bonsai, as it were-retaining the style and tone, and the interpretations, with their nuances and subtleties intact. This Brief Sixth Edition contains about two-thirds of the text of the full-length book, more than one-half of the maps, charts, and figures, and a commensurate proportion of the illustration program.
Presenting American history as the story of a nation in flux, America Past and Present, Brief Sixth Edition, goes beyond recounting the major events that have helped to shape the nation-the wars fought, the presidents elected, the treaties signed. About the Author

Edward H. Judge and John W. Langdon are professors of history at Le Moyne College, where they have team-taught for the last sixteen years a two-semester world history course for first-year students and courses on modern global history for upper-level students. Ed earned his doctorate at the University of Michigan and spent a year in the USSR as an IREX scholar. John earned his doctorate at Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Public Affairs, where he was a National Defense Fellow. Ed has taught at Le Moyne since 1978, was the College's Scholar of the Year in 1994, and was awarded the J. C. Georg Endowed Professorship in 1997. John has taught at Le Moyne since 1971, directed its Honors Program, and was awarded the O'Connell Distinguished Teaching Professorship in 1996. Each has been named the College's Teacher of the Year and has chaired its Department of History. They have written or edited eight books: three in collaboration with each other, three as individuals, and two in collaboration with other scholars. They love teaching world history, especially to students of diverse backgrounds and interests, and they derive great joy from infecting their students with a passion and enthusiasm for the study of the human past.

this seller was absolutely amazing. I was not going to receive my book in time, but they worked with me and I got my book just in time for the class. I WOULD BUY FROM THIS SELLER AGAIN! and i recommend them for students who are unsure of who to trust on amazon with textbooks.

Great Math Textbook!

I had to take this class for college credit. I have taken all sorts of math classes, and this one was not for the faint of heart. However, the book made the process much simpler. I have found many students rely entirely upon the instructor to give them everything they need and then are surprised when they don't understand the concepts. Reading the book is supposed to help with that, but unfortunately many books aren't always the best at reaching the student. However, this book was extremely simple to follow and took me through concepts step by step. Anything that could have been lacking in the course instruction was made up for with the book. Luckily I had a great professor, and the book made it even better. Many books will confuse a person after listening to their professor, this one didn't. It is consistent in its teaching methods throughout the text and teaches in the manner that a student like to think.

This solutions manual is a must. It does not only show the answer (like the book) but shows how they reached the answer - which is far more helpful than the examples given in the text book.

Eighth Edition

I really needed one of these for the ninth edition of "Calculus With Applications" but there doesn't seem to be one available as yet. I bought this anyway, because I figured that seeing the problems worked out in each section could help me understand what I was doing, even if they weren't my exact problems. Turns out that not all the problems were changed, although a good bit of them were. However, if you have a keen eye you will find some of the problems only had a single number or some other easily substitutable item altered, OR, were simply now problem 8 instead of problem 9. With a little bit of effort, this book was a lot more useful than I anticipated.

Hopefully by the time anyone reads this, a ninth edition will be available, but if not, all is not lost.
