About the Author

George C. Edwards III is Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Texas A&M University and George and Julia Blucher Jordan Chair in Presidential Studies. He has held visiting appointments at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Peking University in Beijing, Hebrew University in Jerusalem, the University of London, and the University of Wisconsin in Madison. When he determined that he was unlikely to become shortstop for the New York Yankees, he turned to political science. Today, he is one of the country's leading scholars of the presidency and has authored dozens of articles and written or edited 16 books on American politics and public policy making, including Changing Their Minds? The Failure of the Bully Pulpit; At the Margins: Presidential Leadership of Congress; Presidential Approval; Presidential Leadership; National Security and the U.S. Constitution, and Implementing Public Policy. Professor Edwards has served as president of the Presidency Research Section of the American Political Science Association and is editor of Presidential Studies Quarterly. He has received the Decoration for Distinguished Civilian Service from the U.S. Army and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. A frequent speaker at universities around the country, he often lectures abroad as well. Dr. Edwards also applies his scholarship to practical issues of governing, including advising Brazil on its constitution, Russia on building a democratic national party system, and Chinese scholars on democracy, and authoring studies for the 1988 and 2000 U.S. presidential transitions. When not writing, speaking, or advising, he prefers to spend time with his wife, Carmella, sailing, skiing, scuba diving, traveling, or attending art auctions.

Martin P. Wattenberg is a professor of Political Science at the University of California, Irvine. His first regular paying job was with the Washington Redskins, from which he moved on to receive a Ph.D. at the University of Michigan. While at Michigan, Professor Wattenberg wrote The Decline of American Political Parties (Harvard University Press), currently in its sixth edition. He is also the author of The Rise of Candidate-Centered Politics. In addition, he has contributed many professional articles to journals such as the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, American Politics Quarterly, and Public Opinion Quarterly. Professor Wattenberg has lectured about American politics on all of the inhabited continents. His travels have led him to become interested in electoral politics around the world. He recently co-edited two books -- one on party systems in the advanced industrialized world, and the other on the recent trend toward mixed-member electoral systems.

Robert L. Lineberry is professor of political science at the University of Houston and has been its senior vice president. He served from 1981 to 1988 as dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. A native of Oklahoma City, he received a B.A. degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1964 and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of North Carolina in 1968. He taught for seven years at Northwestern University. Dr. Lineberry has been president of the Policy Studies Section of the American Political Science Association and is currently the editor of Social Science Quarterly. He is the author or coauthor of numerous books and articles in political science. In addition, for the past 35 years he has taught regularly the introductory course in American government. He has been married to Nita Lineberry for 35 years. They have two children, Nikki, who works in Denver, Colorado, and Keith, who works in Houston, Texas. They have three grandchildren -- Lee, Callie, and Hunter.

These books are suppose to come with access cards that provide a code that allow you to access content and resources made available online by the publishers. THESE SELLERS ARE DELIBERATELY REMOVING THESE CARDS AND SELLING THEM SEPARATELY FROM THE BOOK!!! That is what explains the low prices. What originally costs $100 in over-priced college campus bookstores, now costs $120 as 2 SEPARATE ITEMS! SHAME ON YOU!!!

I'm a MBA student in marketing. This book is good, but just that... good. I'm absolutely certain that somewhere has to be a book about strategic marketing that has a little more information (that's the problem, little theory and plenty of numbers) and not so expensive.

About the Author
John Trimbur is a specialist in composition and writing studies, with interests in cultural studies of literacy and the politics of language in the United States and South Africa. He holds a B.A. from Stanford University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from State University of New York, Buffalo. Trimbur is the director of the First Year Writing Program at Emerson College in Boston. He has published widely on writing theory and has won a number of awards, including the Richard Braddock Award for Outstanding Article (2003) for "English Only and U.S. College Composition," the James L. Kinneavy Award (2001) for "Agency and the Death of the Author: A Partial Defense of Modernism," and the College Composition and Communication Outstanding Book Award (1993) for _The Politics of Writing Instruction: Postsecondary_. He also was a visiting professor at the Centre for Higher Education Development and a resident fellow at the Centre for Rhetorical Studies, both at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

Decent Writing Textbook That Emphasizes the Revision Process

I used THE CALL TO WRITE as supplementary material for an upper-class high school writing class. The book is aimed at helping students learn "real world" writing: letters, memos, memoirs, public documents, profiles, reports, commentaries, proposals, reviews, etc. The book provides examples of the different types of writing being discussed along with lots of useful information about what makes a piece of writing in a particular "genre" good.

THE CALL TO WRITE is not intended to be a book that is read for fun. It's a writing textbook for "real life" writing. As far as writing textbooks like this go, there's not a whole lot that stands out to separate it from other writing textbooks other than the illustrations and the emphasis on revision. To break up some of the more monotonous parts of the book, the book includes a variety of pictures and illustrations, such as old-time photographs or the covers of unusual magazines and comics, that enliven the text.

When I was teaching writing, I had a difficult time getting across to students the importance of revision. Good writers revise their writing. Some have to write it out constantly, others do it through visuals, some are able to do it in their minds while talking aloud. However they do it, good writers revise constantly. THE CALL TO WRITE does a good job of emphasizing, in a way students should be able to comprehend, how important revising is.

The textbook is geared towards entry level writing classes, but can also be used as a supplement for upper-class high school writing classes.

A really good deal

I needed this book for a composition class, which required the fifth edition. I found this, the third edition, for five dollars, and bought it. I thought that if I couldn't use it, I could sell it to someone for more than what I paid. It turns out that very little has changed from the third to the fifth editions, and this is almost word-for-word what I need. I ended up spending five dollars on a book that cost everyone else 80 dollars.

The best by far of slim pickings

I reviewed every Money and Banking text I could get my hands on before selecting Mishkin's text to use while I was an instructor at one of the top universities in the US. Mishkin's text was hands-down the best text. But there weren't a lot of alternatives to choose from. This text gets used in a lot of MBA programs.
The thing I liked most about this text was its comprehensiveness. Mishkin did a far better job than the other text of introducing stock options. And of course, he covered the banking (money multiplier, bnak loans, etc.) side comprehensively. Good job with exchange rates, too.
Weaknesses: Need more on the insurance industry, particularly with the biggest banks now firmly in that business. Need more on financial futures. And finally, I'd like to see a little more mathematical rigor. I supplemented the text in an undergrad class with some more mathematical articles from the economics literature.

If you're an independent learner; that is, not enrolled as a student in a course at a school, OR IF YOU ARE, BUT THE INSTRUCTOR IS NOT PARTICIPATING (Using the MyEconLab software for course materials), and thus can't provide you with a COURSEID, a warning about the MyEconLab study aid attachment to this textbook; the instructions for registering to use MyEconLab are less than candid.

They just say that without a CourseId you can still access "most of the online resources listed." You are directed to a generic Mishkin web site instead of registering at the main MyEconLab portal.

Being an honest person, I used the alternate registration. I was still asked for the ZIP for my school; I used my own. I then got a list of local schools or "Other" to choose from. I chose other, and entered "Independent Learner".

The registration then completed; the confirmation stated it is only good for SIX MONTHS.

If you go to the main MyEconLab Web portal shown in the user manual after registering as a non-student, your user ID will not be recognized. You have to use a generic portal for the Mishkin textbook instead.

The Weekly news selection (web links, so may expire; earliest was Aug. 2004)

The "Chapter Readings" in journals, etc. (ditto above)

Since these can expire at their parent web sites, I suggest you take the precaution of printing them out (I use Acrobat to make PDF files or download PDF files if available at the source). Also check out any links in the articles and do the same.

The Readings are probably the best of what you DO get, along with the animations and quizzes. The web links are updated, that's OK if you're not good at figuring that sort of thing out for yourself.

There is also a series of Chapter Appendices, not printed in the book, available with the e-text of the book at the alternate site.

WHAT YOU WON'T GET:

"Foundations Interactive" (whatever that is)

"MathXL for Econ" - the math review tutorial (would be nice)

"Research Navigator"

"eThemes of the Times"

The last two are a REAL Disappointment to me, because the Navigator (see textbook Preface) is supposed (among other things) to provide "a complete YEAR of search for full-text articles from the New York Times" and "Best of Web Link Library of peer-reviewed web sites." The last is described in the Preface as "thematically related articles from the NYTimes accompanied by critical-thinking questions." I was looking forward to these, because the NYTimes charges $$ by the article for archived (non-current) articles, and this can get expensive in a hurry, and an increasing number of other web sites, including industry association journals are now similarly archive and have paid access only.

So without being enrolled in a class that has an instructor who is using the course material software, you won't be able to access some of the BEST of the advertised materials of the MyEconLab add on.

They could have been clearer about WHAT exactly you would have had access to. They also could have said that the non-student registration is only good for 6 months, since the description of the NYTimes access for a full year (which you don't get at all) might reasonably lead one to infer that the registration is valid for a year.

And I fail to see why they couldn't throw in at least the Math review tutorial, since it wouldn't seem to involve any kind of outside contract or royalty such as the NYTimes access might.

Pretty good book for intermediate level

Design:
The book is designed well with appropriate headings and sub-headings making it smooth to read and navigate. The language used is also well understood.
Content:
This book introduces the various financial markets: bond, stock, foreign exchange and a brief discussion on derivatives. It gives a general idea and analysis behind the operating mechanisms of monetary policies, paving the way for further studies into the topics.
Its main focus is on the U.S. economy, and includes applications in the European Union and Asia as well. Small sections are devoted to real world applications, with reference to the concepts taught.
For who:
On the other hand, this book remains an introduction to monetary economies and is not for students seeking detailed analysis. Students should also have a basic background on economics in order to utilize the text to the fullest.

A Solid and Accessible Textbook on Methodology

The book is clearly written, and I am using it this semester for an undergraduate class I teach. I am not a big fan of textbooks in general, as I rarely use them myself, and when I do, it is mostly for concrete and breif reference purposes. This book is very accessible. I especially liked the chapter on focus groups. The chapter on content analysis is also good, because it conveys very clearly the problems that one faces with this particular method, but at the same time the chapter is not mathematically deep. I find that most of my studnets find this book easy to use. As a book on statistics, it is not very powerful, and the presentation of even the basic methods could use better organization. But overall, this is still a useful text.

I'm a Junior at a large university, and this book is required for my Research Methods class. I've put off taking this class until now, since I'm not very math-oriented. This book explains research ideas in a very simple way, and each chapter has lots of examples from politics. My professor sometimes also has us read the sample articles that the chapters list. This is extra work, but seeing how real researchers use a method helps me understand it. By the way, there is math in the statistics section, but it's not really that bad. If you're not a natural whiz at research, this is the book for you.

Comprehensive Coverage of Qualitative Analyses, but ...

This is a well-organized book (this review incedentally is keyed to the second edition) that will prove valuable to students on their maiden voyage into research methods. This is true mainly due to the excellent treatment of how to turn abstract ideas into operationally meaningful tools of research. This of course is the wheel around which everything else in political science research revolves, and thus cannot be over emphasized.

But it is also true that "practice makes perfect," and thus it would have been very useful for the authors to have demonstrated at least a few "high leverage" examples of how this is done. After all it is true that for students who have never seen it done, this part of the process remains a mystery until they either do it, or see how others have done it.

But altogether, I like the way the authors handled this part of the book. Of course it would have helped to have included even a minimal discussion about the scientific process and in particular at least a cameo discussion of the philosophy of science, which even when unseen, undergirds everything that is going on above.

Which gets me to my criticism of the book. Since quantitative methods were virtually ignored, it seems to me that the word "qualitative" should have been in the book's title? Otherwise, other readers may have done as I did: I kept looking for the section on quantitative analysis? There of course is nothing wrong with restricting the book to qualitative analysis only, but a student in the computer age is not likely to get very far before he is hit in the face with the need for quantitative analysis. Plus, many of the "qualitative methods" require "quantitative analyses" as indispensable adjuncts, for example as tests for validity or as tests of statistical significance, etc. Thus it is difficult to get away from quantitative analysis even when it is completely ignored as a major topic.

Finally, so much of this book is a compilation from other more technical sources that it is an egregious and unforgivable mistake not to include a healthy bibliography of those who are the real experts on each of these techniques. It particularly irked me that in the discussion on the Semantic Differential, the inventor of that technique Robert Osgood, was not even mention, let alone cited. Three stars

An Excellent AP Textbook! Got me a 5!

I purchased this textbook to self study for the AP US history exam and can say I was thoroughly satisfied. The text and prose is very well written, you never need to "hunt" for the main point. The information is incredibly good; besides highly detailed resources in the main text, each chapter features an in-depth essay on a certain subject, many of which appeared as multiple choice questions on the 2005 AP exam. Most of the text reads like a detailed story, and keeps one's interest quite well. A note of warning: the authors write this at the college level and students with limited vocabularies may have some difficulty comprehending the text.

Political cartoons and other visual media are very apt and many of the cartoons in the book were the same ones that appeared on my AP and SAT in multiple choice questions.

Some reviewers have complained of a liberal skew, I could certainly see how they would arrive at that conclusion. Chapter titles like "Triumph of the White Man's Democracy" and labeling Columbus as an "invader" seem a bit presumptuous. Additionally, the book tends to put a disproportionate emphasis on women/minorites, however, so does the AP examination. Divine seems not to be so much as liberal, but as challenging commonly held assumptions. For instance, he makes it very clear that FDR's New Deal plan did nothing to bring America out of the Great depression, it only made the period until WWII bearable for some. Divine is quick to criticize the failures of Wilson's 14 points and the economic crisis imposed by the Carter administration. Either way, Divine has facts to back up his statements, facts which can easily be incorporated into AP essays requiring an opinion.

Overall this is an excellent resource, and I highly recommend it, as it got me a 5 on the AP, and 780 on the SAT US History exam.

This is a very nice textbook, and is meant for those who have already had a background in history. I use it for my AP class and really like it. The book reads very well - unlike a lot of history books it doesn't use complex grammar and spelling to sound sophisticated - and has a lot of detail as well as a liberal and well-founded opinion; in addition it has very good diagrams, illustrations, and a chronology for each chapter. It is a real book - there are no built in study guides, self review, or page-consuming explainations of simple concepts that most textbooks have. I reccomend this for all who wish to seriously study history, but not for those who want to skim a book for a quick review.

So we offer Bookmarks as a new generation research handbook, one built on the assumption that students need to know how electronic sources, materials, and methods are altering their relationship to knowledge. And yet we insist that not everything has changed. Bookmarks still do hold readers' places, and research still does often involve familiar activities such as finding topics, browsing indexes, summarizing and paraphrasing sources, and organizing ten-page papers. For this reason, we have carefully designed Bookmarks as a bridge between old and new traditions—a guide for researchers who expect to work regularly in both print and electronic environments. It will be obvious that Bookmarks has been written with the presence of technology assumed. Throughout the volume, for example, we refer to research "projects," not papers, and we treat Web pages, brochures, and multimedia presentations as plausible options for reporting research findings in many situations. We take technology seriously because it creates new opportunities for undergraduates to do serious research in both their local and professional communities. At both the University of Texas at Austin and the University of South Florida, we have watched students using the Web and other technologies grow as writers and researchers, and we have been excited by their achievements. We've also been chastened, occasionally, by Web projects that were more glitter than substance—offered by writers who have failed to read, organize, document, or edit carefully. While much of Bookmarks is genuinely new, the framework for describing research processes and the detailed chapters on documentation draw on materials refined over more than a decade. The result, we are confident, is a research guide that offers writers state-of-the-art advice about college research: the best of an older tradition merged with a thoughtful assessment of the new. Our focus in this book is on offering comprehensive, practical advice for student researchers, including:

An opening section encouraging students to think of themselves as researchers (Section 1a). More than twenty manageable chapters explain the process of research. Specific advice for sizing up research projects and assignments (Section 1b). In particular, writers learn how to read and interpret assignments. A full chapter on project management (Chapter 2), offering suggestions for setting up calendars and timelines. There is fresh advice, too, for working on collaborative projects. A chapter on field research (Chapter 8). Not all research occurs in the library or online, so Bookmarks includes suggestions for conducting interviews, using questionnaires, and making systematic observations. A complete chapter on handling quotations (Chapter 20), offering guidelines for selecting and using quotations. Bookmarks pays unusual attention to rhetorical matters, offering:

A full chapter on finding a topic (Chapter 3) as well as a chapter that helps writers to focus and narrow their theses (Chapter 5). A stasis approach to establishing the purpose of a research project (Chapter 4). Stasis questions also steer the development of thesis sentences and other aspects of the research process. A chapter on drafting the project (Chapter 18) that helps researchers develop cogent arguments for a particular audience. Bookmarks emphasizes the process of evaluating and working with sources, research skills especially critical for success today. We include:

A thorough discussion of intellectual property issues (Chapter 15). The chapter also provides guidelines for using academic sources responsibly. A full chapter on keyword searches (Chapter 7). The chapter helps writers manage electronic indexes and search engines efficiently. A chapter on positioning sources (Chapter 12). Writers learn how to detect and assess the biases in the materials they are using. A full chapter on summarizing and paraphrasing (Chapter 14). A key feature of Bookmarks is its extraordinarily comprehensive coverage of documentation formats, including Columbia Online Style (COS). This new system of documentation for electronic sources is presented authoritatively by its creator (Chapter 22). In addition, Bookmarks includes detailed treatment of MLA, APA, CMS, and CBE documentation styles (Chapters 23-26)—with comprehensive indexes to documentation items and clear examples of citations as they should appear both in the body of a paper and in the list of Works Cited or References. And Bookmarks includes complete sample papers in MLA, APA, and CMS styles, as well as excerpts from papers illustrating COS and CBE styles. Handy checklists help writers set up important items in research papers including title pages, works cited sheets, and abstracts. Bookmarks itself exemplifies the way technology is reshaping the writing process. The book features a strong visual component, with a photo essay telling the story of research throughout the ages. It begins inside the front cover and continues on each tabbed divider. Screen shots of useful Web sites appear on the reverse of all tabbed dividers. This site provides instructors and students with continuously updated resources for reading, writing, and research practice in four areas: Composition, Literature, Technical Writing, and Basic Skills. The site features "Simulated Searches" which recreate the process of finding and evaluating information on the WWW. It also includes "The Faces of Composition," a portion of the site with authentic essays showing students how others have applied what they've learned in composition—investigation, collaboration, inquiry, and debate—to a wide variety of situations. And the site includes helpful annotated "Links" to an online library, scholarly manuscripts, and the like. These links provide the best information on the widest variety of writing issues and research topics. Very useful for reference citations.

I bought this book because it was required for my Rhetoric 101 & 102 courses in college. I still have it and will continue to use it because it is very helpful on teaching you have to create references and work citations for your reports, college papers, projects, etc. Very helpful piece of literature and I don't regret making the purchase.

How to quote and cite correctly

A decent textbook to learn how to write references and use APA format as well as MLA and CMS for quotations.

Now the question is does it worth $40+...I don't think so!

Personally, I found it more useful to refer to these 2 websites: apa.org and bibme.org.
