About the Author

X.J. Kennedy, after graduation from Seton Hall and Columbia, became a journalist second class in the Navy ("Actually, I was pretty eighth class"). His poems, some published in the New Yorker, were first collected in Nude Descending a Staircase (1961). Since then he has written five more collections, several widely adopted literature and writing textbooks, and seventeen books for children, including two novels. He has taught at Michigan, North Carolina (Greensboro), California (Irvine), Wellesley, Tufts, and Leeds. Cited in Bartlett's Familiar Quotations and reprinted in some 200 anthologies, his verse has brought him a Guggenheim fellowship, a Lamont Award, a Los Angeles Times Book Prize, an award from the American Academy for Poetry for Children from the National Council of Teachers of English. He now lives in Lexington, Massachusetts, where he and his wife Dorothy have collaborated on four books and five children.

Dana Gioia is a poet, critic, and teacher. Born in Los Angeles, he attended Stanford and Harvard before taking a detour into business. ("Not many poets have a Stanford M.B.A., thank goodness!") After years of writing and reading late in the evenings after work, he quit a vice presidency to write and teach. He has published three collections of poetry: Daily Horoscope (1986); The Gods of Winter (1991); Interrogations at Noon (2001), winner of the 2001 American Book Award; an opera libretto, Nosferatu (2002); several anthologies; and an influential study of poetry's place in contemporary America, Can Poetry Matter? (1992). Gioia has taught at Johns Hopkins, Sarah Lawrence, Wesleyan (Connecticut), Mercer, and Colorado College. He is also the co-founder of the summer poetry conference at West Chester University in Pennsylvania and a frequent commentator on literature for the British Broadcasting Corporation. He currently lives in Santa Rosa, California, with his wife, Mary, two sons, and an ever growing number of cats.

About the Author

George C. Edwards III is Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Texas A&M University and George and Julia Blucher Jordan Chair in Presidential Studies. He has held visiting appointments at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Peking University in Beijing, Hebrew University in Jerusalem, the University of London, and the University of Wisconsin in Madison. When he determined that he was unlikely to become shortstop for the New York Yankees, he turned to political science. Today, he is one of the country's leading scholars of the presidency and has authored dozens of articles and written or edited 16 books on American politics and public policy making, including Changing Their Minds? The Failure of the Bully Pulpit; At the Margins: Presidential Leadership of Congress; Presidential Approval; Presidential Leadership; National Security and the U.S. Constitution, and Implementing Public Policy. Professor Edwards has served as president of the Presidency Research Section of the American Political Science Association and is editor of Presidential Studies Quarterly. He has received the Decoration for Distinguished Civilian Service from the U.S. Army and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. A frequent speaker at universities around the country, he often lectures abroad as well. Dr. Edwards also applies his scholarship to practical issues of governing, including advising Brazil on its constitution, Russia on building a democratic national party system, and Chinese scholars on democracy, and authoring studies for the 1988 and 2000 U.S. presidential transitions. When not writing, speaking, or advising, he prefers to spend time with his wife, Carmella, sailing, skiing, scuba diving, traveling, or attending art auctions.

Martin P. Wattenberg is a professor of Political Science at the University of California, Irvine. His first regular paying job was with the Washington Redskins, from which he moved on to receive a Ph.D. at the University of Michigan. While at Michigan, Professor Wattenberg wrote The Decline of American Political Parties (Harvard University Press), currently in its sixth edition. He is also the author of The Rise of Candidate-Centered Politics. In addition, he has contributed many professional articles to journals such as the American Political Science Review, American Journal of Political Science, American Politics Quarterly, and Public Opinion Quarterly. Professor Wattenberg has lectured about American politics on all of the inhabited continents. His travels have led him to become interested in electoral politics around the world. He recently co-edited two books -- one on party systems in the advanced industrialized world, and the other on the recent trend toward mixed-member electoral systems.

Robert L. Lineberry is professor of political science at the University of Houston and has been its senior vice president. He served from 1981 to 1988 as dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Kansas in Lawrence. A native of Oklahoma City, he received a B.A. degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1964 and a Ph.D. in political science from the University of North Carolina in 1968. He taught for seven years at Northwestern University. Dr. Lineberry has been president of the Policy Studies Section of the American Political Science Association and is currently the editor of Social Science Quarterly. He is the author or coauthor of numerous books and articles in political science. In addition, for the past 35 years he has taught regularly the introductory course in American government. He has been married to Nita Lineberry for 35 years. They have two children, Nikki, who works in Denver, Colorado, and Keith, who works in Houston, Texas. They have three grandchildren -- Lee, Callie, and Hunter.

Perfect Classroom Supplement

The instructor of this book lent me this book for a short while, and I read it 'til dawn. Unlike other social sciences textbooks, this book is written in engaging prose that both keeps the attention of the student without diluting the topic with unnecessary simplification. The authors add an interesting perspective on the principles of modern government and its relationship with the American public by speaking of recent events in context of the subject matter; they'll often mention modern figureheads like Kerry, Gingrich and Pelosi; although the 2008 election (or even the next news broadcast) could render the book dated a relatively short amount of time, its young lifespan gives the ultimate experience for any high school senior wanting a well-rounded look into the American government that's both interesting and informative.

I was taking a very tough English class last semester and this book was insanely good at helping me survive it. My professor was a tyrant about APA (and her version was completely strange) and this book helped me survive her class. I didn't think I could. This book is a survival guide and a life saver!

A great anthology and comprehensive of one of the most interesting literary periods in history. Lots of excerpts from some of the greatest English authors. I am primarily using it in my 19th century Brit Lit. class and it has served as a very helpful and insightful textbook. Would recommend to any college English student or anyone who loves great literature. Only complaint is that it has a lot of a little bit, and therefore skips around a lot on some works. But it is after all an anthology.

Not bad-

The book wasn't in the best condition, but for 10 bucks you can't beat it! Mainly there was wear and tear on the outside of the book. As far as the inside, there were a few hand-written notes, but nothing major. It was worth the money & I'm glad I got it.

Slightly better than Cormen - highly readable

Best undergraduate handbook about algorithms i've seen so far.
Examples are much less artificial than in CLRS (Introduction to Algorithms). Most of them are highly practical, e.g. using Kruskal's MST algorithm as a simple clustering device.
It's worth mentioning that E.Tardos is a world-class calibre specialist in graph algorithms. When you feel unsatisfied with network flows chapter, you can read her survey of network flows (written with two other graph titans - Goldberg and Tarjan)
The division into chapters is good, yet classical. There are also exercises after each chapter, lots of them, good for preparation if you have algorithm-oriented job interview (Google, Yahoo, Microsoft etc.).

What's next? Read Tarjan's evergreen classic - Data Structures and Network Algorithms.

Excellent book, but do NOT buy the Kindle edition!

This review is for the Kindle edition of "Algorithm Design" by Kleinberg and Tardos Algorithm Design

This book is wonderfully organized. I used it for an Algorithms course and it's just very well laid out, with a nice progression of topics. If you want to gain a good "overall" picture of algorithms, this book is perfect. As with any kind of math, if you want to go much deeper, you'll need specialized textbooks for particular topics, but for a reasonably complete, holistic, one-semester course, you'll love this book. I should also point out that there are several well-crafted exercises in each chapter to cement your understanding and give your grey matter a good workout!

IMPORTANT: The Kindle edition of this book is a horribly travesty to the non-digital edition. The typesetting is crude (Amazon, you can do way better!), important figures/diagrams are scaled to tiny sizes, and formulas just plain look incorrect. My best guess is that this was re-typeset by hand, by a non-technical person using MS Word, so they simply messed it up badly. Personally, I am kicking myself for having paid nearly $90 for this, when I could've bought the "real" textbook for $110.

I was sorely tempted to give it a one-star review, but the content is top-notch, brilliantly put-together and an asset to any student of Computer Science. To recap: DO NOT BUY THE KINDLE EDITION!

If you do buy the Kindle edition after reading this review, you'll only have yourself to blame.

Detailed, clear and complete

The flow in this book is excellent. The authors do a great job in organizing this book in logical chapter. The chapters are organized into techniques to find solutions to particular problems, like for example, Greedy Algorithms, Divide and Conquer, and Dynamic Programming.

Each chapter contains a few representative problems of the technique or topic discussed. These are discussed in great detail, which is helpful to initially grasp the concepts. Furthermore, the end of each chapter contains a number of solved exercises. These are written up in less detail than the chapter problems, because they are usually slight variations or applications of the representative problems. I found these to be very helpful to me, as to build up a stronger grasp of the problem at hand.

Furthemore, the progressive search for a solution, such as for the Weighted Interval Scheduling problem using dynamic programming, is essential to understanding the process through which we can find such algorithms. The book is well written, in a clear, understandable language. The supplementary chapters on Basics of Algorithm Analysis and Graph Theory are a great started for people who have not been exposed to those concepts previously.

Network flows are covered extensively with their applications. I suppose this section of the course was enhanced because our instructor's research interests are Network Flows and she threw example after example at us. There are a great number of problems at the end of this chapter to practice.

One of the strenghs of this book, is that when the authors determine the running time of a particular algorithm, they write about how to implement it, with which data structures and why. Although it is assumed that data structures are common knowledge for the reader, this type of analysis is helpful for further understanding of such structures.

All in all, this is a great textbook for an introductory course in the design of algorithms.

"Can you build us an AppleScript to do that?"

That question has been put to me dozens of times over my ten-plus years doing Macintosh support, and in almost every instance, the answer has been "yes." AppleScript has literally helped me to earn my living, in the sense that I've been hired to build customized applications that--to name just a few--scan the entire content of a weekly newspaper and flag any prohibited words for later exclusion, pull records from a database and turn them into a fully-formatted 32-page pamphlet of health-specific Web sites, and convert the SGML-tagged text from a medical journal into XPress Tags coding for import into QuarkXPress.

I first got turned on to AppleScript at a Macworld Expo back in the 1990s, when I attended a presentation given by a very enthusiastic service bureau employee by the name of Sal Soghoian. Not a programmer by trade, Sal had discovered the joys of AppleScripting while trying to free himself from some of the redundant tasks he was faced with while outputting his client's documents. I was so excited about what I saw him do with his QuarkXPress scripts that I ran up to him after his talk and starting peppering him with questions. Evidently recognizing my enthusiasm, he offered me a free copy of his "Sal's AppleScript Snippets," a 3.5" floppy disk containing a few dozen simple QuarkXPress AppleScript routines and some brief but helpful documentation. From that point forward, I was hooked on AppleScript.

So who better to author an AppleScript training guide for beginning scripters? For the past eleven years, Sal has been the product manager for automation technologies at Apple, and his own enthusiasm for scripting has helped to create a community of AppleScripters who, like me, were exposed to his Macworld sessions and got turned on to all the possibilities AppleScript offers. Sal's co-author, Bill Cheeseman, is no slouch either when it comes to scripting; a civil litigator and trial lawyer by day, he founded the AppleScript Sourcebook Web site (now MacScripter.net), an invaluable reference for scripters, way back in 1996.

Given this book's pedigree, I was expecting it to be the best AppleScript book I've seen to date (at least six AppleScript reference manuals currently reside in my programming library) in terms of introducing the non-programmer to scripting. After reviewing the initial chapters and working through some of the hands-on exercises, I was not in the least bit disappointed. The book truly does begin at "square one" by walking the reader step-by-step through the creation of a Finder toolbar script that is actually useful for restoring your Desktop to a preferred (uncluttered) state, and moves on from there to essential concepts like object references, conditionals, loops, and error handlers. While these concepts might sound intimidating to the newly-initiated scripter, Sal and Bill do an excellent job of making them both understandable and accessible.

As an AppleScripter, I can confirm that documenting the many aspects of this scripting language presents a challenge to any author--note that this book weighs in just shy of 900 pages. Recognizing this, the authors have taken what I consider to be a unique approach to the overall structure of the book. The first twelve chapters, which they call "Instant AppleScript," cover the fundamentals of scripting in a linear fashion, providing enough of a foundation for the reader to get started with basic scripting. Chapters 13-30 serve as more of a reference guide, and are organized in a way that even intermediate and experienced scripters will find useful, with individual chapters on folder actions, scripting connections to network servers, unit coercions (converting distance/weight/temperature, etc.), date scripting, and using the Script Editor, the built-in application used to construct and compile AppleScripts. The third section (that's the "3" in "AppleScript 1-2-3") refers to the downloadable content provided, which includes example scripts, updates, errata, and additional training materials.

Throughout the book, the writing is clear and concise, and each and every script is referenced with an ID, such as "SCRIPT 9.46," so that when multiple scripts appear on a single page or spread, there's no doubt as to which script the text refers. Screen shots are used extensively where appropriate, and the 31-page index is not merely exhaustive, but contains individual entries for each of the symbols employed in AppleScript, not just the terms and concepts. Perhaps equally as helpful, however, was the publisher's choice to use "lay-flat" binding for this book so that you can place it on your desk, open it to page 146, and actually have it remain open to that very page without flopping closed within a few seconds. This might seem like a small thing, but anyone who's ever tried to complete a "hands-on" tutorial from a book that refuses to stay open knows precisely where I'm coming from.

I've found some room for improvement in pretty much every product or book I've reviewed to date, but try as I may I can't really conjure up any creative criticism to offer the authors of "Apple Script 1-2-3." The best I can come up with is that I wish the included screen captures were a bit larger and in color, but that's really a piddling complaint. The bottom line is, if you're a beginner and you're serious about learning how to write AppleScripts, you won't find a better book out there.

Excellent AppleScript Book

I bought the book and received it from Amazon. I personally have been waiting a long time and am glad to see it is finally released. Overall the best and largest book available on the topic. If you have ever attended one of Sal's standing room only AppleScript classes (I have) the book is structured as he describes in the forward. He took his classes and put them in print. He starts off with the basics and quickly moves into more complex examples. If you know AppleScript the first chapter may move slow for you, but you can easily jump ahead. Best $31 you can spend if you are interested in learning AppleScript and don't have lots of time. Disregard the one star review. Don't pan the book because Amazon has a weak "Look Inside" you don't like. You can give Amazon one star in other places.

Not very good for me

This book was not worth the money, for me. When I purchased the book (recently) I was new to Applescript, but had experience programming in Visual Basic on the PC. This book did not help me very much at all. I can't see in it what other reviewers have reported. It was not organized very well. It was well written and you can see the author(s) knows the subject well, but just didn't present it in a simple, organized way suitable for a beginner. Moreover, I can't see how this book would be much help for experts either. The book is over 800 pages long, and you have to read over half of it before you even get to the basics. It's sort of like a massive tutorial, focused mainly on programming Finder.

I thought two other books are much, much better - Beginning AppleScript (Programmer to Programmer) (WROX) which was I thought an almost perfect book for beginners, and AppleScript: The Definitive Guide, 2nd Edition (O'REILLY), which seemed excellent for beginner and expert alike. Both of those books are a little out of date (e.g., they refer to Script Editor which has been renamed AppleScript Editor, and to AppleScript Utility, which has been discarded and incorporated into AppleScript Editor). But they are still worth a lot more that this book, despite a few minor things like that. I understand there's a new book out that might be good, but I haven't read it - AppleScript (Developer Reference). Even so, I don't see how anyone could go wrong with the two older books I just mentioned; they are both well worth the money, but experts might want to pass on the Beginning Applescript one.

Excellent book for learning SQL. This little books seems to pack a big punch in everything there is to know about SQL. There are around 200 to 300 sample queries, that start from the basics to nice fancy ones. You will learn about sub setting, functions, grouping, joins, sub queries, set operations, indexes, views, data definition language, and much more. For every topic you will get instructions on how its done in about the five most common SQL implementations.

This Book Makes My Job Easier.

There are several "software-independent" SQL books available. I thumbed through a number before landing on this one. I believe I got real lucky.
I'm a research analyst at a large medical center. I pull data from various sources using SQL front-ends and stuff data into MS Access for analysis or additional manipulation. I needed an SQL reference for both parts of my job, understanding what I was getting from the hospital systems and writing better SQL in Access or imbeddded SQL in VBA code. This book serves my needs because it is a thorough reference and also because it has plenty of Access examples and tips.
I'm also impressed with the layout of the Visual QuickStart Guide. It is very easy to find the information you are after and the bullet points are generally right on target with the details important to the task at hand. I haven't had to read the entire book cover to cover to do some work, and that's the point. When the author does interject himself, his comments are insightful and meaningful. An example, "Although SELECT is powerful, it's not dangerous. You can't use it to add, change or delete data... The dangerous stuff starts in Chapter 9."

Extensive Treatment of Nulls

Anyone who uses SQL regularly knows that it's absolutely critical to understand nulls - you can't write SQL programs or interpret results without mastering them. In most of the SQL books that I've read, nulls are mentioned once near the beginning and not given much screen time afterwards - perhaps popping up in an example here and there. This book takes the different (and welcome) approach of weaving the implications of nulls throughout the entire text. In addition to null rudiments, this book addresses crucial issues such as detecting and counting nulls, how nulls give rise to three-value logic (true/false/unknown), when nulls are considered to be duplicates and when they aren't, substituting actual values for nulls and vice versa, how nulls sort, how nulls propagate through computations, which functions ignore nulls and which don't, how nulls affect joins, and how nulls cause problems in subqueries. The book also contains specific tips for Oracle, which (for some reason) considers empty strings to be nulls.

A good writers and composition handbook

I taught this book for three years at a community college. It was in between using two Diana Hacker books Rules for Writers and the Bedford Handbook.

For myself, this book is very comprehensive. If I could, I could have taught the entire course using this text, although our college requires an additional "reader." There are enough sample essays and other pieces in here that the reader portion could be done with this book. Its approach is encyclopedic to grammar, punctuation, usage, and spelling problems.

I also found its section on composition essentials very well done, particularly chapter 4 on paragraphs. I found their explanation of how to do MLA papers and research papers in general quite useful.

Before we used this textbook, I would usually download supplementary information from net websites on paragraphing and MLA papers to fill in the gap between what students wanted to know and what the textbooks said on these and other subject. However, the Little,Brown Handbook was so full of information, that I did not have to do that during the years I used this book.

This is a good book if one is embarking on a serious campaign as a writer. When I was more active as a writer, I found that other writers and copy editors on publications I worked on continually stocked up on such books. These are the best places to look for clarification on problems of grammar, mechanicws, and usage. Surprisingly, even for the experienced degreed writer, what such books say about improving rhetoric or diction is often useful, the basics we can forget easily.

As such, even though our college has moved back to Hacker, I will keep it out as a reference for my own writing and editing.

Yet, as a text book for an individual composition course, its sixty dollar price, makes the book an outrageous drag on already emptied student pockets. The scandal of the price of university texts needs to be exposed and investigated.

Essential tool for all wordsmiths, not just students

Although intended primarily for students, The Little Brown Handbook is an excellent reference for all nonfiction writers. While writing my own recent book on option pricing, I consulted it often regarding the use of colons, semicolons, dashes, and other fine points of punctuation. It even served as an arbiter of correct grammar and usage in the occasional dispute with my copy editor! Almost everything critical to good writing is covered--from organization, paragraph coherence, and sentence structure, to punctuation, word choice, and issues of style--and in sufficient detail to be useful to the working wordsmith. Guidelines for academic writers, a discussion of the American Psychological Association (APA) style employed in the social sciences, and suggestions for use of the internet in research, also appear in The Little Brown Handbook. All in all, this book should be found near the Strunk and White classic, The Elements of Style, on any writer's bookshelf. I would unhesitatingly recommend it to anyone who writes, either for pleasure or for a living.

Best explanation of MLA format I've seen in print.

I picked this up for an English. The wonderful and detailed explanation it gives of MLA formatting made it worth it for me. It is also handy to have around if you find yourself confused about any rules of the English language. I like to write short-stories in my free time and this is nice to have on hand. I can easily look up quick references in the glossary and everything is explained clearly.
