Northanger Abbey: A Longman Cultural Edition, by Jane Austen

From Longman's Cultural Editions Series, Northanger Abbey, edited by Marilyn Gaull, presents key texts that illuminate the lively intersections of literature, tradition, and culture.

This edition places Jane Austen and Northanger Abbey in the major conversations of Romanticism, not just the gothic novel and female education. It places the novel in two contexts, 1798, when it was written, and 1818, when it was published, illustrating its relevance to both periods and the major writers, especially the poets.

This edition connects Jane Austen with the major Western literary tradition, from ancient myth, the Arabian Nights, to Cervantes, Flaubert, and Virginia Woolf.

Amazon.com Review
Though Northanger Abbey is one of Jane Austen's earliest novels, it was not published until after her death--well after she'd established her reputation with works such as Pride and Prejudice, Emma, and Sense and Sensibility. Of all her novels, this one is the most explicitly literary in that it is primarily concerned with books and with readers. In it, Austen skewers the novelistic excesses of her day made popular in such 18th-century Gothic potboilers as Ann Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho. Decrepit castles, locked rooms, mysterious chests, cryptic notes, and tyrannical fathers all figure into Northanger Abbey, but with a decidedly satirical twist. Consider Austen's introduction of her heroine: we are told on the very first page that "no one who had ever seen Catherine Morland in her infancy, would have supposed her born to be an heroine." The author goes on to explain that Miss Morland's father is a clergyman with "a considerable independence, besides two good livings--and he was not in the least addicted to locking up his daughters." Furthermore, her mother does not die giving birth to her, and Catherine herself, far from engaging in "the more heroic enjoyments of infancy, nursing a dormouse, feeding a canary-bird, or watering a rose-bush" vastly prefers playing cricket with her brothers to any girlish pastimes.

Catherine grows up to be a passably pretty girl and is invited to spend a few weeks in Bath with a family friend. While there she meets Henry Tilney and his sister Eleanor, who invite her to visit their family estate, Northanger Abbey. Once there, Austen amuses herself and us as Catherine, a great reader of Gothic romances, allows her imagination to run wild, finding dreadful portents in the most wonderfully prosaic events. But Austen is after something more than mere parody; she uses her rapier wit to mock not only the essential silliness of "horrid" novels, but to expose the even more horrid workings of polite society, for nothing Catherine imagines could possibly rival the hypocrisy she experiences at the hands of her supposed friends. In many respects Northanger Abbey is the most lighthearted of Jane Austen's novels, yet at its core is a serious, unsentimental commentary on love and marriage, 19th-century British style. --Alix Wilber

From Library Journal
Austen is the hot property of the entertainment world with new feature film versions of Persuasion and Sense and Sensibility on the silver screen and Pride and Prejudice hitting the TV airwaves on PBS. Such high visibility will inevitably draw renewed interest in the original source materials. These new Modern Library editions offer quality hardcovers at affordable prices.

Review
Novel by Jane Austen, published posthumously in 1817. Northanger Abbey, which was published with Persuasion in four volumes, was written about 1798 or 1799, probably under the title "Susan." In 1803 the manuscript of "Susan" was sold to the publisher Richard Crosby, who advertised for it, but unaccountably it was not published at that time. The novel combines a satire on conventional novels of polite society with one on gothic tales of terror. Catherine Morland, the daughter of a country parson, is the innocent abroad who gains worldly wisdom: first in the fashionable society of Bath and then at Northanger Abbey itself, where she learns not to interpret the world through her reading of gothic thrillers. --The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

Absolutely delightful
By Daniel Jolley
I approached this book somewhat warily, knowing that Northanger Abbey was to some degree a satirical take on the immense popularity of Gothic romances such as Ann Radcliffe's The Mysteries of Udolpho, a book I dearly love. Happily, Austen's means of poking fun at Gothic horror literature are far from mean-spirited and, as a matter of fact, can be delightfully humorous indeed. Her heroine, Catherine Morland, is by no means the type of heroine to be found in the giant tomes of Radcliffe and her indulgent imitators, as Austen tells her reading audience directly from the very start. "Almost attractive" on a good day, this unintellectual tomboy has reached her fifteenth year without inspiring a young man's fancy, nor would she be able to delight him with musical skill or even draw his profile in her secret notebooks if she had. Having encountered no strangers who would prove to be a lord or prince in disguise, her heroic ambitions seem stymied at best until fate steps in and grants her a stay of several weeks in the delightful town of Bath. Making her transition from naïve girl to equally naïve young lady, Catherine almost immediately falls quite in love with young Henry Tilney, while at the same time she becomes intimate friends with an older young lady named Isabella, whose inconstancy as both friend and intended beloved of Catherine's own brother eventually brings her much pain. To her intense delight, however, Catherine is invited by General Tilney, Henry's father, to spend some few weeks in his home, Northanger Abbey. Her joy at spending such private time in the company of her beloved and new best friend Eleanor Tilney is immense, but equally exciting to her is the chance to spend time in a mysterious former abbey of the sort she has read so much about. Such Gothic romances as Udolpho have been the source of her recent heroic training, and she is wildly desirous and fully expectant of discovering hidden passages, dark secrets, frightening circumstances, and possibly even incalcitrant perfidy in the halls of her beloved's family home. Her overactive imagination runs wild in Northanger Abbey, bringing her a fair share of embarrassment, but the very sweet and tender sensibilities that fuel her fire for Gothic mystery make her all the more endearing to me. Catherine is remarkably innocent, and as such she is absolutely delightful in my eyes.
Much of the story does fit in with your typical Gothic novel, but the frightening and dismaying things Catherine eventually discovers are of a far from supernatural sort. Ever so gradually, a true monster slowly coalesces from the pages of this remarkable novel. I, like young Catherine, was somewhat overenthusiastic concerning the Gothic qualities of this adventure I feel I shared with her, and the truly despicable thoughts and actions of the book's villain did not immediately strike me as forcefully as they should have; the afterword by Elizabeth Hardwick included in my Signet Classic copy of the book, however, served to make me fully comprehend its import. Greed, selfishness, pride-these are the horrors of Northanger Abbey, and it does deeply hurt a reader of romantic sensitivity to stand idly by, unable to aid and assist a sweet young lady such as Catherine in her time of despair and emotional suffering.
Lovers of Gothic horror or literature in general will surely find nothing but delight in the pages of Northanger Abbey. Austen's critique of Gothic literature is quite subdued, and I actually find immense pleasure in the overindulgence the author sometimes employs in her attempts to satirize it. Written by Austen at a tender age (though not published until the year following her death), Northanger Abbey features incredibly human, complex characters full of wit and charm. The hidden motives of seemingly delightful friends is brought to light, teaching young Catherine as well as the reader a painful lesson in real life, yet romance stands at the ready to right the wrongs of self-interest, deception, and greed. I absolutely adore this novel and everything about it.

A hilarious sendup of the Gothic novel
By A Customer
I used to love Gothic novels. I collected out-of-print Victoria Holt paperbacks, I had stuffed animals named after characters in Charlotte and Emily Bronte novels, but ever since I've read Northanger Abbey, I can't read a Gothic novel with a straight face. Jane Austen does a marvelous job of sending up convoluted scary novels (and melodrama in general) in this book, and creates her most masculine and fascinating hero, Henry Tilney.
Don't think that Catherine Morland, the heroine, is just a naive kid. Her naivete is a necessary component of the novel, as it allows her to see the wider world with fresh eyes, provide a foil to the more worldly characters, and ultimately capture the heart of the hero.
And then there's Henry...he teases, he teaches, he forgives Catherine's regrettable fancies, knowing that he had a hand in encouraging them. He's witty, he's charming, he's kind of a slob, and he wears his greatcoats so well!
As in all her novels, Jane Austen provides a great host of hilarious supporting characters, in particular John and Isabella Thorpe and Mrs. Allen. I defy anyone not to laugh at John Thorpe's nonsensical and contradictory comments. One wonders how many such "rattles" wearied Miss Austen's attention to provide such a character study.
Great writing, great story, great characters...come to Northanger Abbey with a sense of humor and you will not be disappointed.

Charming Demeanor, Wickedly Funny
By Emily Snyder
" "I see what you think of me," said he gravely--"I shall make but a poor figure in your journal tomorrow."
"My journal!"
"Yes, I know exactly what you will say: Friday, went to the Lower Rooms; wore my sprigged muslin robe with blue trimmings--plain black shoes--appeared to much advantage; but was strangely harassed by a queer, half-witted man, who would make me dance with him, and distressed me by his nonsense."
"Indeed I shall say no such thing."
"Shall I tell you what you ought to say?"
"If you please."
"I danced with a very agreeable young man, introduced by Mr. King; had a great deal of conversation with him--seems a most extraordinary genius--hope I may know more of him. That, madam, is what I wish you to say." "
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Northanger Abbey," the first, shortest, most satiric, and least read of Jane Austen's completed novels, is a delightful treasure that will make you quite literally laugh out loud (so beware bringing the book to the airport, as I did, lest you suffer strange glances for your smothered sniggers). Following the journey of the coming-of-age Catherine Morland and her misadventures in Bath to the "horrid" Abbey, Jane Austen presents us with perhaps her funniest sociological book, that proves not only that teens will be teens in any age, but that an overactive imagination is not always a blessing, and that love is often the result of being loved. Readers should keep on the lookout for the commentaries on novels, feminine wiles and homecomings from Austen herself - a technique subdued in her other novels. The cast also includes Jane Austen's wittiest hero, Henry Tilney (a.k.a. "Da Man"), as well as a female foil more duplicitous than "Sense and Sensibility's" Lucy Steele. The Signet Classic edition boasts a good introduction by Margaret Drabble, perhaps better read after the text as a commentary. Best viewed as a comedic parody, "Northanger Abbey" is a pleasure to read, whether you are a long-standing member of the JASNA, or just dipping into the boisterous literature of the Regency.
Felicitous reading! Yours, &c.,
Linear Algebra and Its Applications, 3rd Updated Edition (Book & CD-ROM), by David C. Lay
Linear algebra is relatively easy for students during the early stages of the course, when the material is presented in a familiar, concrete setting. But when abstract concepts are introduced, students often hit a brick wall. Instructors seem to agree that certain concepts (such as linear independence, spanning, subspace, vector space, and linear transformations), are not easily understood, and require time to assimilate. Since they are fundamental to the study of linear algebra, students' understanding of these concepts is vital to their mastery of the subject. Lay introduces these concepts early in a familiar, concrete Rn setting, develops them gradually, and returns to them again and again throughout the text so that when discussed in the abstract, these concepts are more accessible.
Good book
By UG_MechEng
I am just finishing up an introductory Linear Algebra course using this book. I am a mechanical engineering student, and not a math major, so keep that in mind when reading this review.
I personally really liked Lay's approach and writing style. The first chapter is a basic overview of linear algebra and helps you start to see what linear algebra is all about immediately.
I also like Lay's method of highlighting important theorems and definitions. He uses a light blue background for theorems and key ideas and a greenish type color for definitions. Very helpful for studying and you don't have to dig through the text to find the main topics. There is also a glossary, something that seems kind of rare in math textbooks and I really liked having.
I liked the practice problems before each problem set, they were kind of like examples, except the solution was on a different page. Also, row operations in this text always work out nicely, which means I didn't struggle with difficult computations that need not be difficult and cloud the concept I was trying to learn.
I didn't feel like there was enough problems. For each section there was about 10-20 problems computational problems, some true/false questions, and about 10-15 or so questions that either asked you to prove things or were applied problems. I wish there was twice the amount of problems, I'm the kind of student who needs lots of practice.
The invertible matrix theorem should of been summarized in its entirety somewhere. Its scattered across 6 sections in 5 different chapters.
I feel the book is really good for engineering students and applied math majors. Pure theoretical math majors, I could see how you might not like this book. The text doesn't seem that abstract and you aren't buried in proofs, but I believe Lay has geared his text more towards applied mathematics than pure math anyways. I was able to learn most of the material on my own as my professor (as in most math and science classes) was really bad.
In summary, I feel that this book is good for self-study or as a saving grace from a poor professor.
The clearest of the bunch
By N.S. Palmer
I'm familiar with three linear algebra textbooks: Gilbert Strang's Linear Algebra and Its Applications, Georgi E. Shilov's Linear Algebra, and now this one. It was recommended to me by one of my brothers, who had the author as a professor at the University of Maryland - College Park.
Gil Strang's book is very well regarded, and I like it, too. However, as a writer, Strang tries a little too hard to be friendly and colloquial. As a result, some of his explanations are less clear than they need to be. It helps that videos of his linear algebra lectures are on the Web at [...], and those lectures clarify some of the "folksy" wording in the textbook. Strang obviously loves his subject and knows it thoroughly, but those qualities, however admirable, do not substitute for clear writing.
Georgi E. Shilov's book is also highly regarded, by me as well. Shilov is one of those no-nonsense Russian mathematicians who's all about the subject and doesn't care if you like him or not. As a result, his writing is very clear and straightforward, albeit a little stiff and formal even in translation. The great virtues of Shilov's book are that the writing is clear and it's very rigorous: in fact, a reader would do well to have some familiarity with abstract algebra before starting it. But the book's virtues are also its weakness: because of the rigorous treatment, Shilov offers considerably less conceptual hand-holding than Strang. Yes, you can understand what he's talking about, but you'd sure better have a strong mathematical background, time, and self-confidence to plow through his book, especially if it's on your own.
Which brings us, finally, to the Lay book. I am delighted to report that Lay combines the informal, encouraging tone and conceptual hand-holding of the Strang book with the clarity of the Shilov book. In other words, they're all good, but for most undergraduates, Lay is the best of the three. There's also an excellent study guide (Linear Algebra and Its Applications: Study Guide (update))for the Lay book.
I have heard students complain about how unhelpful this book is and professors complain that it is too easy.
I strongly disagree with both.
I am very well acquainted with the following introductory texts: Strang, O'Nan, Leon, Larson and Lay. As a student, I learned initially from the O'Nan text, then transferred colleges and had to repeat the class with the Strang text. As a professor, I have taught out of the 3 remaining texts. I have also examined the text written by Kolman.
Lay's Ch. 1 is an extraordinary result: he creates an overview that unites all the main ideas that comprise linear algebra.
No other text I know of comes near the breadth or clarity he achieves in this opening chapter. This chapter alone makes the book worth owning.
I also want to answer those who attack the Student Study Guide. It one of the few I have seen that is actually written by the author. It is likewise excellent and provides answers and hints for all the most critical problems in the text. I highly recommend it as well. I require it when I teach using the Lay text.
I have convincingly achieved my best classroom outcomes using the Lay text. I have actually covered most of the first 6 chapters and the first 2 sections of Ch. 7 at the junior college level in one semester with a decent group of students who were often slowed down by a group of underachievers in the class.
In summary, students who do not like this book will be hard pressed to find anything better- just pick up one of the competing texts used in colleges today and try to read it. Lay is by far the most 'user-friendly' text, he is clearly attempting to engage his readers. Unfortunately, most students at this level do not have enough experience at this point to make an informed judgement about the quality of a mathematics text or the quality of a mathematics teacher.
Professors who do not appreciate this text are an even more puzzling group. I can only surmise that the teachers in this group do not understand the ideas or the focus of an introductory class in linear algebra very well and are simply teaching without thinking.
Elementary Algebra made Abstruse
By Amazon Customer
Too wordy and confusing. I am a student returning to college, 50 odd years old, and willing to do the extra work to earn top grades. A's in my other classes, which are science, not so in algebra. The author makes an attempt to explain basic algebra, yet completely misses the mark 90% of the time. He also attempts to address math anxiety with little "helpful hints" throughout the text, however his insights are "elementary" to those who actually have any difficulties with algebra. This book was required for the class, I wouldn't recommend purchasing unless it's required, then buy used (I always buy new books to keep for future reference.) I gave it one star because it has some sticky tabs in the back which are reusable and helpful to mark pages.
Visions of America: A History of the United States, Combined Volume, by Jennifer D. Keene, Saul T. Cornell, Edward T. O'Donnell
how conflicting visions of America have shaped our nation’s past.
Visions of America recognizes the value of using images to engage students in serious inquiry about the historical development of the United States. Visual images are critical primary sources, and using them effectively requires the development of key analytic skills. This new textbook revolutionizes the role of images in the history survey by integrating them into the narrative. The visual legacy of the nation’s past also provides insight into the competing visions of America that have shaped American political culture. Visions of America explores the tensions and conflicts that have marked virtually every chapter of American history. It presents history as a dynamic, unpredictable, and dramatic process shaped by the choices made by people of all classes.
Quality history - makes great use of images
By Daniel
The history covers all of the main themes and events of U.S. history, but what makes it noteworthy are the images. Instead of being placed in the text to add some color and break up the words, here the images are interwoven with the text, referred to extensively in the narrative, and present a vivid introduction to the history. Images have points of view, especially political cartoons, and this text helps the reader spot the points of view and analyze them critically.
The book is a good way to get one's feet wet in the overall narrative and do it in an appealing way. The content of the text, including the interesting chapter introductions, glossaries of terms ending each chapter, and good interpretive questions on every page, is also of high quality for advanced or beginning learners.
I write this as a reviewer for Prentice Hall for their upcoming 2nd edition of the book.
Race and Sex
By John F. Lutes
The book puts way too much emphasis on race and sex, and then completely leaves out nearly every major battle in each conflict. For example, the conflict in the Philippines during World War II only has three lines written about it in the book. The Battle of Midway, located in the same chapter, takes up a similar amount of space. Admiral Doolittle and his raid on Tokyo aren't even mentioned in the book. However, more than half of the World War II chapter is dedicated to racism and women in workplace.
Comparative Politics Today: A World View, by Gabriel A. Almond, G. Bingham, Jr. Powell, Kaare Strom, Russell J. Dalton
This classic text defined the discipline of comparative politics and continues to define the direction of the course by offering the same respected approach in an accessible new edition. The text has been fully updated and the theoretical chapters have been thoroughly revised and restructured. Beginning with chapters explaining structural functionalism theory--which provides students with a framework for understanding comparative politics--the text then moves to the 12 individual country studies. Each country study has been written by a pre-eminent specialist on the political system of that nation. The new edition of Comparative Politics Today features a new "Contemporary Problems" section in each study, plus new "Example Boxes" to help students learn.
Upper level text with a wide array of countries
By John T. Jenkins
This book stands apart from the other comparative pol. books because of its lengthy introductory unit (almost 150 pages in 7 chapters). Some of it is very deep analytical material which is appropriate for very advanced students, but most high school readers will die of confusion if boredom doesn't finish them off first.
For the country chapters, they are very thorough, and each is 40-50 chapters, quite a lot of material. It's pretty dense, too. One good thing is that the book includes the usual "big" ones (G.B., France, Russia, China) as well as Germany and Mexico, but also India, Nigeria, Brazil, and Egypt, giving much material for the often overlooked less-developed countries.
BEST PRICE EVER
By DYU
What can I say? For the price I got it felt like a gift. I don't really like this book which of course just makes it even less justifiable to pay much much more for the latest edition. Even for a politics textbook you can live with older editions. I'm halfway through the course and when I needed to use the book it is 90% as useful as can be expected.
Dragging your feet
By K. Bentley
Although this book has wonderful facts and figures, and should be used as a reference material, it is awfull for reading. The only way you will finish reading this book is if you have to for school or you are very motivated. It is slow and does not keep your attention.
User Stories Applied: For Agile Software Development, by Mike Cohn
Thoroughly reviewed and eagerly anticipated by the agile community, User Stories Applied offers a requirements process that saves time, eliminates rework, and leads directly to better software.
The best way to build software that meets users' needs is to begin with "user stories": simple, clear, brief descriptions of functionality that will be valuable to real users. In User Stories Applied, Mike Cohn provides you with a front-to-back blueprint for writing these user stories and weaving them into your development lifecycle.
You'll learn what makes a great user story, and what makes a bad one. You'll discover practical ways to gather user stories, even when you can't speak with your users. Then, once you've compiled your user stories, Cohn shows how to organize them, prioritize them, and use them for planning, management, and testing.
  • User role modeling: understanding what users have in common, and where they differ
  • Gathering stories: user interviewing, questionnaires, observation, and workshops
  • Working with managers, trainers, salespeople and other "proxies"
  • Writing user stories for acceptance testing
  • Using stories to prioritize, set schedules, and estimate release costs
  • Includes end-of-chapter practice questions and exercises
I felt guilty throughout much of the mid-1990s. I was working for a company that was acquiring about one new company each year. Every time we’d buy a new company I would be assigned to run their software development group. And each of the acquired development groups came with glorious, beautiful, lengthy requirements documents. I inevitably felt guilty that my own groups were not producing such beautiful requirements specifications. Yet, my groups were consistently far more successful at producing software than were the groups we were acquiring.
I knew that what we were doing worked. Yet I had this nagging feeling that if we’d write big, lengthy requirements documents we could be even more successful. After all, that was what was being written in the books and articles I was reading at the time. If the successful software development teams were writing glorious requirements documents then it seemed like we should do the same. But, we never had the time. Our projects were always too important and were needed too soon for us to delay them at the start.
Because we never had the time to write a beautiful, lengthy requirements document, we settled on a way of working in which we would talk with our users. Rather than writing things down, passing them back and forth, and negotiating while the clock ran out, we talked. We’d draw screen samples on paper, sometimes we’d prototype, often we’d code a little and then show the intended users what we’d coded. At least once a month we’d grab a representative set of users and show them exactly what had been coded. By staying close to our users and by showing them progress in small pieces, we had found a way to be successful without the beautiful requirements documents.
Still, I felt guilty that we weren’t doing things the way I thought we were supposed to.
In 1999 Kent Beck’s revolutionary little book, Extreme Programming Explained: Embrace Change, was released. Overnight all of my guilt went away. Here was someone saying it was OK for developers and customers to talk rather than write, negotiate, and then write some more. Kent clarified a lot of things and gave me many new ways of working. But, most importantly, he justified what I’d learned from my own experience. Extensive upfront requirements gathering and documentation can kill a project in many ways. One of the most common is when the requirements document itself becomes a goal. A requirements document should be written only when it helps achieve the real goal of delivering some software.
A second way that extensive upfront requirements gathering and documentation can kill a project is through the inaccuracies of written language. I remember many years ago being told a story about a child at bath time. The child’s father has filled the bath tub and is helping his child into the water. The young child, probably two or three years old, dips a toe in the water, quickly removes it, and tells her father "make it warmer." The father puts his hand into the water and is surprised to find that, rather than too cold, the water is already warmer than what his daughter is used to. After thinking about his child’s request for a moment, the father realizes they are miscommunicating and are using the same words to mean different things. The child’s request to "make it warmer" is interpreted by any adult to be the same as "increase the temperature." To the child, however, "make it warmer" meant "make it closer to the temperature I call warm."
Words, especially when written, are a very thin medium through which to express requirements for something as complex as software. With their ability to be misinterpreted we need to replace written words with frequent conversations between developers, customers, and users. User stories provide us with a way of having just enough written down that we don’t forget and that we can estimate and plan while also encouraging this time of communication.
By the time you’ve finished the first part of this book you will be ready to begin the shift away from rigorously writing down every last requirement detail. By the time you’ve finished the book you will know everything necessary to implement a story-driven process in your environment. This book is organized in four parts and two appendices.
Part I: Getting Started-A description of everything you need to know to get started writing stories today. One of the goals of user stories is to get people talking rather than writing. It is the goal of Part I to get you talking as soon as possible. The first chapter provides an overview of what a user story is and how you’ll use stories. The next chapters in Part I provide additional detail on writing user stories, gathering stories through user role modeling, writing stories when you don’t have access to real end users, and testing user stories. Part I concludes with a chapter providing guidelines that will improve your user stories.
Part II: Estimating and Planning-Equipped with a collection of user stories, one of the first things we often need to answer is "How long will it take to develop?" The chapters of Part II cover how to estimate stories in story points, how to plan a release over a three- to six-month time horizon, how to plan an ensuing iteration in more detail, and, finally, how to measure progress and assess whether the project is progressing as you’d like.
Part III: Frequently Discussed Topics-Part III starts by describing how stories differ from requirements alternatives such as use cases, software requirements specifications, and interaction design scenarios. The next chapters in Part III look at the unique advantages of user stories, how to tell when something is going wrong, and how to adapt the agile process Scrum to use stories. The final chapter of Part III looks at a variety of smaller issues such as whether to writes stories on paper note cards or in a software system and how to handle nonfunctional requirements.
Part IV: An Example-An extended example intended to help bring everything together. If we’re to make the claim that developers can best understand user’s needs through stories then it is important to conclude this book with an extended story showing all aspects of user stories brought together in one example.
Part V: Appendices-User stories originate in Extreme Programming. You do not need to be familiar with Extreme Programming in order to read this book. However, a brief introduction to Extreme Programming is provided in Appendix A. Appendix B contains answers to the questions that conclude the chapters.
The user story bible
By Lasse Koskela
'User Stories Applied' was a book that long stood on my Amazon wish list with a 'must have' rating. I'm not disappointed. I loved the book. Now let me explain why.
First of all, running the planning aspect of an XP project, for example, well is essential for reaping the benefits of agile software development. Yet, relatively little has been written to guide practitioners in doing that. I, for example, have made all the mistakes Cohn enumerates in the chapters for guiding the user towards writing *good* user stories (usually more than once). These sorts of things make you realize you shouldn't put the book on the shelf to gather dust! The author doesn't cover just writing good user stories, but the whole spectrum from putting together the customer team to estimating stories to discussing the stories to writing acceptance tests for the stories.
Second, it's a pleasure to read. The structure makes sense, each chapter is followed by a useful summary, and there's a set of questions -- along with answers -- to make sure you understood what the chapter talked about. Usually these kinds of Q&A sections simply force me to skip them over. The questions in this book did not. I read each and every one of them and I think there was only one set of questions that I did 'pass' with the first try, usually having forgotten some rather important aspects to consider (concrete evidence of their usefulness to me). To finish, the last part of the book, an example project, nicely ties together all the threads.
As usual, there were some things I experienced not so well. I believe the chapter on applying user stories with Scrum could've been left out without breaking the plot. Also, I think a typical user wouldn't have been bothered about dropping the appendix introducing Extreme Programming.
In summary, this is the book to get if you're involved with user stories. I had to pause reading every few pages to scribble down some specific tips. I'm confident that you will too.
More recent books are a better buy
By Michael Simpson
It pains me to give this a 2-star rating because I'm a big fan of Mike Cohn and his writings. The reason for my rating is for two reasons:
1) The book reads like a bunch of individual articles that were bundled together, with a thin attempt to apply a common example application to tie them all together. Instead, you get too many instances where he makes a point that was previously made at least once, if not more, as if it's a new idea. I found the book somewhat disjointed, and difficult to read.
2) The book is dated. You can get everything that's in this book, in a more coherent format, plus additional material, in "Succeeding with Agile". I would have given this book a much higher rating when it was first released, but ten years later, there are better ways to spend your money on the same author.
Finally! Practical advice on writing user stories, and more
By Lisa Crispin
This excellent book is a must-have for anyone on an agile team - developers, testers, business experts, analysts - and for anyone who struggles with requirements, planning, or estimating on any software project.
User Stories Applied is easy to read and digest. As the title suggests, its techniques are easy to apply and deliver huge value. Each chapter summarizes developer and customer responsibilities, and has questions whose answers are provided in an appendix. The book is full of real-life, concrete examples, allowing you to learn from the successes and failures of others.
This book will give you many tools to help your projects succeed. Just a few of the most valuable topics:
When are user stories too big, too small, too detailed, too general, too open ended, when are they not user stories, and how to correct all these.
Why use user stories.
How to handle requirements for infrastructure, performance, qualitative aspects, UI.
How to ask questions to elicit requirements.
How to cope when you don't have `on-site customers'.
Practical ways to estimate stories.
Monitoring velocity and progress.
When to keep and when to discard artifacts.
Mike explores the differences between stories and other techniques for delivering requirements: IEEE 380, use cases, scenarios. He points out many positive side effects of user stories, such as encouraging participatory design and tacit knowledge accumulation.
I particularly like that the book emphasizes the team's responsibility to successfully complete each iteration. I enjoy Mike's illuminating bits of wisdom, such as the "everything takes 4 hours" example. I love the comprehensive example in Part IV. No matter what your level of experience, you'll put the ideas in this book to immediate and productive use.
About the Author
Marge Lial was always interested in math; it was her favorite subject in the first grade! Marge's intense desire to educate both her students and herself has inspired the writing of numerous best-selling textbooks. Marge, who received Bachelor's and Master's degrees from California State University at Sacramento, is now affiliated with American River College.
Marge is an avid reader and traveler. Her travel experiences often find their way into her books as applications, exercise sets, and feature sets. She is particularly interested in archeology. Trips to various digs and ruin sites have produced some fascinating problems for her textbooks involving such topics as the building of Mayan pyramids and the acoustics of ancient ball courts in the Yucatan.
When John Hornsby enrolled as an undergraduate at Louisiana State University, he was uncertain whether he wanted to study mathematics, education, or journalism. His ultimate decision was to become a teacher, but after twenty-five years of teaching at the high school and university levels and ten years of writing mathematics textbooks, both of his goals have been realized.
His love for teaching and for mathematics is evident in his passion for working with students and fellow teachers as well. His specific professional interests are recreational mathematics, mathematics history, and incorporating graphing calculators into the curriculum.
John's personal life is busy as he devotes time to his family (wife Gwen, and sons Chris, Jack, and Josh). He has been a rabid baseball fan all of his life. John's other hobbies include numismatics (the study of coins) and record collecting. He loves the music of the 1960s and has an extensive collection of the recorded works of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons.
David Schneider has taught mathematics at universities for over 34 years and has authored 36 books. He has an undergraduate degree in mathematics from Oberlin College and a PhD in mathematics from MIT. During most of his professional career, he was on the faculty of the University of Maryland ¿ College Park. His hobbies include travel, dancing, bicycling, and hiking.
College Algebra, 9th edition, by Lial
By Christine Ott
I just got done with taking my final in College Algebra using this textbook. I was extremely frustrated and stressed during the whole course because I just couldn't get it! This book did not explain enough and just quickly glossed over or assumed that you knew the info already. Definitely not written for students, but for professors already gifted in algebra!! Needless to say, I struggled through this whole course. I had to buy three other algebra books just to understand what this textbook left out. I would not recommend this textbook at all!
Sadly disappointed
By Salena Potter
This text is a pathetic excuse for educational material. It gives meager examples and many are not even applicable to the chapter exercises. By far this is the poorest written text I have encountered in three years of college.
This book is the pits
By R. Pryor
I am by no means a math wizard. I am, however, able to learn things on my own fairly well. This book makes that nearly impossible though. This book gives very few examples, and the few that they do give rarely give any clues to what needs to be done to solve the equations. It also fails to really teach anything. It's by no means for a student that is going to be going through an online course where they won't be interfacing with an instructor. I would not have enrolled into the course for online schooling if I had know this books was going to be this terrible. I strongly don't recommend this book!!!
