This study guide is included for free on the CD that comes with the textbook, so there's no reason to pay extra for a hard copy. The preface to the textbook says that the study guide is available separately for students who want to study without a computer.

Not Terrible

If you are forced to use the truly terrible book that this study guide is for, then this is a wise investment. The book has very few examples, so the study guide helped a lot when i was completely lost. Although this guide usually shows how to work every other problem, ensuring that you will find similar problems to the ones you are assigned, sometime it will have huge sections of the problems that it leaves out, which is why i gave it 4 stars insead of 5.

Student Study Guide for Linear Algebra and Its Applications
This is a waste of money for students wanting to go the extra distance to improve their understanding of the concepts in the textbook, and/or to those that are keen to learn from their mistakes by seeking additional information in Lay's study guide. Not all of the odd numbered questions are answered and so frequently students might find themselves referring to an extra guide that provides no further insight than the textbook itself. And far too often the textbook's answers will note "See the study guide for hints' only to find the study guide referring students back to sections in the textbook that they should re-read. (The answer to section 4.3, question 21 is just one of many examples.) Really? Given students are paying in excess of $120 for a used textbook (on top of course fees) couldn't these types of 'hints' be put in the textbook? Why market to students a separate guide that simply redirects them back to the textbook?
The fourth edition did not come with a cd rom. (Perhaps some new versions do but the "new" version I received did not.) My instinct was to use Schaum's outlines as an alternative source but I resorted to Lay's guide given his textbook hinted at some higher learning via the additional guide. That was a marketing mistake that I fell for but one that I hope others might avoid. All in all I found Lay's Linear Algebra Study Guide disappointing. It is sorely lacking by educational standards, such as Stewart's Calculus and the abundance of student support and additional resources that he makes available. In hindsight I should have stuck with Schaum's and the free online resources.

Took a Grammar 101 refresher course

This book is a barebones discussion of parts of a sentence. I literally went through college without having this awareness of every single word in a sentence. KInda scary, lol. Tenses and verb forms are particularly intimidating---you kinda know what sounds right but can't actually explain the rule (or the dynamic) behind it.

I want my children, nieces and nephews to go over this book (even in review), to at least know the rules, but choose to break them. This is obviously different from breaking them out of ignorance,

This book was required for my English class in college. I ordered it as soon as school started and expected to get it two weeks later; this is when we would have used the book, and the maximum time limit that it would take to be delivered. I ended up getting the book a full week later and was forced to make copies in the library. Now my final statement is, the book id helpful for your English skills BUT BUY IT FROM ANOTHER WEBSITE OR SELLER.

A Good Update to a Classic Text

It took a while before this 4th edition came out. The 2nd and 3rd editions were pretty good, and the 4th ed still contains a lot of the old material. Clearly, this says something about finance theory - but it updates a lot of the empirical results and includes some new/relevant topics. I would have to agree that this book is probably a little shallow for the Ph.D. level, but most Ph.D. corporate finance courses probably would use papers rather than texts. Hence, that's where your actual derivations and the actual author's thought comes from. On the other hand, this book takes a very good approach and the authors are very respected in the field. In terms of a more advanced MBA text, I think that this is the best book available.

Disappointing

I had this book for a PhD class in finance and have very few good words to say. The derivations should have been omitted: rarely is anything followed from the beginning to the end; the excerpts that are provided do not give much additional insight. Abundant typos in the formulas. In addition, the context of the models is often poorly presented and I was often left wondering what the situation or some assumptions are. Overall, relatively poorly written.

The book does give an overview of a lot of papers and as long as it is viewed as a starting point to read the papers it is acceptable. Still, the presentation is very fragmented and frustrating, creating a strong desire to read the original papers.

Poor printing quality, lots of typos

This is considered poor quality even in a 3rd world country! Several pages are badly copied and misplaced in a manner that parts of the text have droped out of the page! The pages have little margin, and are low quality black and white copies of an original. It looks so cheap. The book has lots and lots of typos, the worse part is, most of them are in formulas and mathematical areas where precision is of key importance to ones ability to comprehend. Overally, I'm dissatissfied, might say dissapointed. $180? For this piece of low quality copy offset mess?

If you own Final Cut Pro you have to have this book

I love Final Cut Pro (FCP), I have used it for the last 4 years and have found it to be an incredible program but the text that comes in the box is not realy that good, this is true for all three versions of FCP that I have worked with. Lisa Brenneis has done a great job in this version as she has done in others. This text has been a lifesaver for me many times. I could not imagine trying to work in FCP without it. For those who have upgraded from a previous version of FCP I recommend you also update to the current version of Lisa's book I have found that the quickest way to get my head around the many changes FCP has gone through is to read the upgraded text. Lisa has true mastery of FCP and understands how to communicate, which is rare in tech manual writers.

Final Cut Pro 4 for Mac OS X (Visual QuickPro Guide)

I have been cutting on FCP now for 4 years and this has been my goto FCP reference guide book. This book definitely has a lot of good information in it, however I have found quite a few of the procedures I am looking for to not be outlined clear enough that you can read that section and accomplish what you had hoped to do on the first try. (quite a few procedures require a bit of trial-and-error) I have also found it difficult to look in the index for certain topics and been able to find what I was looking for easily. This book is better than the manual which comes with FCP, but if you are looking for clear, simple instructions that are easy to find and follow, I would look to another book.

I wish I knew about this book before grad micro...

The assigned text in my graduate micro theory class was Mas-Collel/Whinston/Green (MWG), a book that I couldn't wait to get rid of. However, I have a much better appreciation of MWG after having read Jehle and Reny (JR). JR is strong where MWG is weak and vice versa. JR provides a clear, self-contained introduction to key concepts in advanced micromicroeconomic theory but is not comprehensive in its coverage. MWG on the other hand is more terse and requires a greater level of math preparation, but is truly the encyclopedia of micro. Regarding the comments of the disappointed reader from Cambridge MA, it's true that there are not many applications in J&R, but that's not really the point of this book. As the title indicates, this is a theory book. Nicolson's or even Varian's intermediate texts are good places to look for applications. But for grad micro theory, I would recommend reading both JR and MWG, in that order.

The best book for Micro

Firstable, this is a Graduate Micro book, nobody could properly say that it is not good if she is trying to get some stuff of this topic for the first time, this is not the goal of this book, it was created to make first year econ-grad students lives better.
I used MWG (Mas Colell) for the first semester Micro of the Phd program and most of my partners and I hated it, it is so complicated and has some excessive and wording detail for even simple things, however I should recognize that it is more complete than the rest of books, now in the second Micro we're using Jehle and Reny and we love it, to be honest this is the best book in Micro now (according to my knowledge and point of view), we also use Silberberg sometimes (very good) and Varian (has a lot of gaps even though it is easy to understand too) but this is the best, it is not probably as complete as MWG but it is more neat, precise and far more understandable, general equilibrium part has one third of the pages of MWG but it is better, it doesn't have Offer curves neither other minor things but the proofs of existence of Walrasian equilibrium and the welfare theorems are incredibly powerful and far shorter than those of MWG. For Game Theory it is also very very good, clear and precise without excessive wording.
I almost forgot....the Math appendix is the best I've ever found in any other Micro book, it gives you precisely what you need to get into the business.
This book is like "pure gold" no regrets of any kind.

it iseasy to read and ordered

The book is quite intuitive, covers a lot of material that an beginning graduate student should know. Lot of exercises help a lot and just the most important theorems are proved in the text.

Seems to be quite similar to the Mass-Collel, Whinston and Green MWG text. MWG is a great book, but really needs a lot of work in special at the exercises and examples, being that cover a lot of material in some points there are so many assumptions for proofs that some of them are confusing and sometimes proofs are not complete. I feel this is the difference with this book, this books cares a bit more at the assumptions of theorems, somehow reorganizing much of the same content that appears at MWG and making some proofs less general but more harmonic with the content of the book.

I recomend it to use as a complement of MWG, that for me even considering the small bad points MWG continues being the best book for microeconomic theory.

Lester, after 13 editions, its' still the best.

Lester's "Writing Research Papers" is still the standard reference tool for university students and high school students who have to write research papers. It also provides an excellent rubric for developing and organizing any type of essay, not just research papers. I first encountered this book as an undergraduate in it's fourth edition. I had previously used Coyle and similar books as required resources. Comparatively, Lester wins hand down because it is concise with good examples. Many editions later, in the world of electronic communications, Lester is still relevant as it has been updated to provide an accepted standard for citing electronic reference and Web sources. I have had to purchase three additional copies since my first, one for each of my sons. In fact I really need to get the most recent edition for my own use since my youngest will taking his copy with him when he heads off to college. This is a must have reference tool for any serious student and a good resource for the professional.

Lester & Lester, Jr's Writing Research Papers, 10th Ed.

I've written both MLA and APA research papers, and now I teach research writing. THIS IS THE ONE. I use a textbook (usually focusing on Argument/Rhetoric) and Lester's as the reference. It provides a wealth of solid advice, examples, outlines, guides, visuals and Web site addresses. Even though this as an English course, practically none of my students are English majors... so why teach MLA only when they'll have to use APA (social sciences) or CBE (science majors) in the not too distant future? This book addresses that and includes CMS (Humanities, Fine Arts). The appendix is EXCELLENT with the locations of sources for multiple disciplines ranging from Anthropology to Women's Studies.
If your not an English major (and most aren't) and you want to learn research writing from source material to presentation style, this is the reference book.

I am a High School English teacher who has taught the research paper for 18 years. I have used this Lester book in 5 different editions over the years. I love this work, and think it is the best product out there for students, but the price has become prohibitive. I can no longer ask my students to buy their own copies. I wish there was a version at a more reasonable cost.

This revision of Bloom's taxonomy is designed to help teachers understand and implement standards-based curriculums. Cognitive psychologists, curriculum specialists, teacher educators, and researchers have developed a two-dimensional framework, focusing on knowledge and cognitive processes. About the Author

Dr. Lorin W. Anderson is a Carolina Distinguished Professor at the University of South Carolina where he has served on the faculty since 1973. He has written extensively in the areas of classroom instruction and school learning, educational programs for economically disadvantaged children and youth, and testing and assessment. In addition to this title, he has authored Bloom's Taxonomy: A Forty-Year Retrospective (1994), A Handbook for Teacher Leadership (1995), and the International Encyclopeida of Teaching and Teacher Education, Second Edition (1995)
