About the Author

Peter Szor is security architect for Symantec Security Response, where he has been designing and building antivirus technologies for the Norton AntiVirus product line since 1999. From 1990 to 1995, Szor wrote and maintained his own antivirus program, Pasteur. A renowned computer virus and security researcher, Szor speaks frequently at the Virus Bulletin, EICAR, ICSA, and RSA conferences, as well as the USENIX Security Symposium. He currently serves on the advisory board of Virus Bulletin magazine, and is a founding member of the AVED (AntiVirus Emergency Discussion) network.

Preface Preface Who Should Read This Book

Over the last two decades, several publications appeared on the subject of computer viruses, but only a few have been written by professionals ("insiders") of computer virus research. Although many books exist that discuss the computer virus problem, they usually target a novice audience and are simply not too interesting for the technical professionals. There are only a few works that have no worries going into the technical details, necessary to understand, to effectively defend against computer viruses.

Part of the problem is that existing books have little—if any—information about the current complexity of computer viruses. For example, they lack serious technical information on fast-spreading computer worms that exploit vulnerabilities to invade target systems, or they do not discuss recent code evolution techniques such as code metamorphism. If you wanted to get all the information I have in this book, you would need to spend a lot of time reading articles and papers that are often hidden somewhere deep inside computer virus and security conference proceedings, and perhaps you would need to dig into malicious code for years to extract the relevant details.

I believe that this book is most useful for IT and security professionals who fight against computer viruses on a daily basis. Nowadays, system administrators as well as individual home users often need to deal with computer worms and other malicious programs on their networks. Unfortunately, security courses have very little training on computer virus protection, and the general public knows very little about how to analyze and defend their network from such attacks. To make things more difficult, computer virus analysis techniques have not been discussed in any existing works in sufficient length before.

I also think that, for anybody interested in information security, being aware of what the computer virus writers have "achieved" so far is an important thing to know.

For years, computer virus researchers used to be "file" or "infected object" oriented. To the contrary, security professionals were excited about suspicious events only on the network level. In addition, threats such as CodeRed worm appeared to inject their code into the memory of vulnerable processes over the network, but did not "infect" objects on the disk. Today, it is important to understand all of these major perspectives—the file (storage), in-memory, and network views—and correlate the events using malicious code analysis techniques.

During the years, I have trained many computer virus and security analysts to effectively analyze and respond to malicious code threats. In this book, I have included information about anything that I ever had to deal with. For example, I have relevant examples of ancient threats, such as 8-bit viruses on the Commodore 64. You will see that techniques such as stealth technology appeared in the earliest computer viruses, and on a variety of platforms. Thus, you will be able to realize that current rootkits do not represent anything new! You will find sufficient coverage on 32-bit Windows worm threats with in-depth exploit discussions, as well as 64-bit viruses and "pocket monsters" on mobile devices. All along the way, my goal is to illustrate how old techniques "reincarnate" in new threats and demonstrate up-to-date attacks with just enough technical details.

I am sure that many of you are interested in joining the fight against malicious code, and perhaps, just like me, some of you will become inventors of defense techniques. All of you should, however, be aware of the pitfalls and the challenges of this field!

That is what this book is all about.

What I Cover

The purpose of this book is to demonstrate the current state of the art of computer virus and antivirus developments and to teach you the methodology of computer virus analysis and protection. I discuss infection techniques of computer viruses from all possible perspectives: file (on storage), in-memory, and network. I classify and tell you all about the dirty little tricks of computer viruses that bad guys developed over the last two decades and tell you what has been done to deal with complexities such as code polymorphism and exploits.

The easiest way to read this book is, well, to read it from chapter to chapter. However, some of the attack chapters have content that can be more relevant after understanding techniques presented in the defense chapters. If you feel that any of the chapters are not your taste, or are too difficult or lengthy, you can always jump to the next chapter. I am sure that everybody will find some parts of this book very difficult and other parts very simple, depending on individual experience.

I expect my readers to be familiar with technology and some level of programming. There are so many things discussed in this book that it is simply impossible to cover everything in sufficient length. However, you will know exactly what you might need to learn from elsewhere to be absolutely successful against malicious threats. To help you, I have created an extensive reference list for each chapter that leads you to the necessary background information.

Indeed, this book could easily have been over 1,000 pages. However, as you can tell, I am not Shakespeare. My knowledge of computer viruses is great, not my English. Most likely, you would have no benefit of my work if this were the other way around.

What I Do Not Cover

I do not cover Trojan horse programs or backdoors in great length. This book is primarily about self-replicating malicious code. There are plenty of great books available on regular malicious programs, but not on computer viruses.

I do not present any virus code in the book that you could directly use to build another virus. This book is not a "virus writing" class. My understanding, however, is that the bad guys already know about most of the techniques that I discuss in this book. So, the good guys need to learn more and start to think (but not act) like a real attacker to develop their defense!

Interestingly, many universities attempt to teach computer virus research courses by offering classes on writing viruses. Would it really help if a student could write a virus to infect millions of systems around the world? Will such students know more about how to develop defense better? Simply, the answer is no...

Instead, classes should focus on the analysis of existing malicious threats. There are so many threats out there waiting for somebody to understand them—and do something against them.

Of course, the knowledge of computer viruses is like the "Force" in Star Wars. Depending on the user of the "Force," the knowledge can turn to good or evil. I cannot force you to stay away from the "Dark Side," but I urge you to do so.

One of the best technical books I've ever read

Peter Szor's 'The Art of Computer Virus Research and Defense' (TAOCVRAD) is one of the best technical books I've ever read, and I've reviewed over 150 security and networking books during the past 5 years. This book so thoroughly owns the subject of computer viruses that I recommend any authors seeking to write their own virus book find a new topic. Every technical computing professional needs to read this book, fast.

I read this book from cover to cover. The author does not lie when he says acquiring the same amount of information requires digging in obscure virus journals and analyzing malicious code. TAOCVRAD's single most powerful aspect is the author's persistence in naming one or more sample viruses that exemplify whatever concept he is discussing. In other words, all of his theory is backed by, or builds on, real-life examples. Each chapter contains moderate end-notes that provide pointers for additional research.

A truly great book has the power to change deeply-entrenched opinions, or make readers look at old problems in a new light. In my case, I altered my perception of the virus problem and ways to fight it. First, I changed my concept of viruses and worms. Peter builds on Fred Cohen's virus definition to say 'a computer virus is a program that recursively and explicitly copies a possibly evolved version of itself.' He calls worms a 'subclass of computer viruses.' I used to disagree with Peter; I believed a virus infects files and requires user interaction, and a worm spreads by itself via the network. Now I agree with Peter's viewpoint: 'worms are network viruses, primarily replicating on networks... If the primary vector of the virus is the network, it should be classified as a worm.' The distinction is subtle, but it makes sense to consider worms a subclass of viruses given Peter's extensive analysis of both types of malware.

Second, I recognized I held an opinion Peter considers unfortunate: 'some computer security people do not seem to consider computer viruses as a serious aspect of security, or they ignore the relationship between computer security and computer viruses.' I was guilty as charged. I used to positively detest viruses because they seemed like mindless automated code that did little but replicate. After reading about scores of real viruses, I have a profound appreciation for virus technology. Viruses introduced techniques for obfuscation, stealth, and exploitation a decade earlier, in some cases, than the single-shot exploit code we see today.

Third, Peter put a human face on the problems associated with closed-source operating systems like Microsoft Windows. Many so-called Native API calls are undocumented, and as such make life difficult for anti-virus developers. (Virus writers tend to know them.) With Microsoft entering the anti-virus market, will it leverage these secrets to outperform competitors lacking this internal knowledge?

Readers of Ed Skoudis' 'Malware' or Jose Nazario's 'Defense and Detection Strategies against Internet Worms' will find this new book greatly complements those two works. Those wishing to get the most value from TAOCVRAD should have Intel assembly coding skills and several years of hands-on security experience.

I had almost no issues with this book, which is striking given it is nearly 700 pages long. In a few places I found the language a little rough, but not enough to bother me. I believe a code listing on p. 372 should show a '

Preface What's a bookmark? A decade ago, the answer would have been simple—a strip of metal, fabric, or paper inserted between the pages of a book to hold a reader's place. But, today, a bookmark can also be understood as a feature in a Web browser, a way to store Web addresses one expects to consult often. Someone familiar with the World Wide Web might even use the term as a verb: to bookmark. What has happened to this simple word provides a rationale for Bookmarks: A Guide to Research and Writing. Just as electronic technology has complicated the meaning of bookmark, it has similarly transformed every aspect of research for college writers and instructors. So we offer Bookmarks as a new generation research handbook, one built on the assumption that students need to know how electronic sources, materials, and methods are altering their relationship to knowledge. And yet we insist that not everything has changed. Bookmarks still do hold readers' places, and research still does often involve familiar activities such as finding topics, browsing indexes, summarizing and paraphrasing sources, and organizing ten-page papers. For this reason, we have carefully designed Bookmarks as a bridge between old and new traditions—a guide for researchers who expect to work regularly in both print and electronic environments. It will be obvious that Bookmarks has been written with the presence of technology assumed. Throughout the volume, for example, we refer to research "projects," not papers, and we treat Web pages, brochures, and multimedia presentations as plausible options for reporting research findings in many situations. We take technology seriously because it creates new opportunities for undergraduates to do serious research in both their local and professional communities. At both the University of Texas at Austin and the University of South Florida, we have watched students using the Web and other technologies grow as writers and researchers, and we have been excited by their achievements. Very useful for reference citations.

I bought this book because it was required for my Rhetoric 101 & 102 courses in college. I still have it and will continue to use it because it is very helpful on teaching you have to create references and work citations for your reports, college papers, projects, etc. Very helpful piece of literature and I don't regret making the purchase.

A decent textbook to learn how to write references and use APA format as well as MLA and CMS for quotations.

Now the question is does it worth $40+...I don't think so!

Personally, I found it more useful to refer to these 2 websites: apa.org and bibme.org.

GREAT collection of stories

This is an amazing collection of contemporary stories and essays about writing by contemporary writers. The commentary is beautifully written, and the history of short stories very helpful and informative. There are also story groupings in the back (chronological arrangements, stories grouped by subject and theme, which are useful either for teaching or for study for individual writers trying to figure out how stories work. As a reader, writer, and teacher, I really appreciate having such a good balance of stories by men and women, and from writers from all kinds of backgrounds. It makes for a much richer and more interesting book -- this is one I'd take to a desert island, to remind me of the pleasures and problems of life in the world.

A Required Text for My Students

Over the years, I have relied on several textbooks to teach from for my Introduction to Modern American Literature course. In recent semesters, for the fiction segment of the class, I have been using Nguyen and Shreve's "The Contemporaty American Short Story", and made it a mandatory text for the students. The selections are generous and, more important, wide-ranging in styles and cultural representation. I am also glad that the term "Contemporary" includes stories written almost half a century ago (Cheever's "The Swimmer" was published in 1964). So the stories are not only cross-cultural but also cross-generational.

Another note: While college students tend to sell back their textbooks or sell them to other students, many of my students have told me that they have held onto the book and continued reading the short stories not covered in class. That is high praise, indeed.

Good selection of stories - that is not my problem ...

Good selection of stories - that is not my problem with the product. I would consider using this in one of my future creative writing courses, only the work presented here is exclusive rather than inclusive. Not a SINGLE gay story by a gay male writer. No Andrew Holleran, Edmund White, nor Felice Picanos. These days, my thought on the best way to teach a class is to have this on hand, scan from it the stories you want to teach, supplement with other stories (gay and straight) and have a packet available at a copy store. Plus assign Burroway and a small press collection by a new writer (that year's Flannery O'Connor Award winner, perhaps). This way students get a WIDE variety, and are privy to what is happening in the publishing world that very year.

A poorly done book. This coupled with a really monotonous / bad professor make learning Diff Eq a dread. The worked examples skip huge steps, assume you know things, and are hard to follow as a result.

Horrible Textbook, learn Differential Equations from ANYWHERE else

By far one of the WORST books I've ever used for a course in my entire life. As a student who is now on his last semester for his Bachelor's degree of Mechanical Engineering I can say with confidence this book is absolutely horrible. The explanations for elementary topics are so drawn out and that it makes things far more complicated than they should be. More over, when the book address the more complex aspects of this field, it skips so many steps in the examples that they might not was well be there at all. Most examples in the book go from one algebraic step to another by just saying "as you can see it just becomes..." when in reality they omit upwards of 10 steps, making it completely useless. Much of my time spent in this book was not even on working out the exercises at all, but instead just trying to figure all the omitted steps in the example problems to understand the material before I could even attempt the exercises. Unless you have a VERY firm base knowledge of Differential Equations absolutely DO NOT READ THIS BOOK. You will spend more time banging your head against it than actually getting anything out of it!!!

Worst Textbook

This is, without a doubt, the worst textbook I have ever had the intense displeasure of working with. It offers long-winded, confusing explanations for simple topics, and over-simplified or completely absent explanations for the more complicated material. Examples are rare and convoluted. I believe that they did this in an attempt to illustrate more than one concept per example, but this only serves to confuse the student. The examples frequently shorten steps, or omit them entirely. The exercises themselves are a nightmare. They are poorly laid out, inconsistent, and reference material that has yet to be covered. Instructors, if you are considering this book as a primary text for your Differential Equations course, don't. This book adds layers of frustration and confusion to an already challenging subject.

This book has rather short (about ten page long) chapters. Furthermore, the author has such a talent that all chapters are easily readable without any paper-pencil work, and when you start reading a chapter, you can not help but finishing it.
For more than ten years, I had attempted many times to read a number theory book thoroughly, but each time I tried, I could never managed reading more than ten pages. On the contrary, when I started reading this book, by chance, I found it so enjoyable that, spending an hour a day at my leisure, I finished it within few months. For me, it was more fun to read this book than any other book on any subject, whatsoever. So, I highly recommend this valuable book to all who wants to access and comprehend the beauties of the number theory, easily.

Based on the recommendations I read on Amazon and the advertisements, I purchased this book, believing at last that I had found a lucid introduction to this subject. BE FOREWARNED, THIS BOOK IS EVERYTHING BUT FRIENDLY!!!!! Most of the problem are considerably beyond the scope of an introduction and no answers are provided and few meaningful clues given. In addition, no answers are provided which only makes matters worse.

Documentation Conventions

This document contains conventions for numeric values as follows.Hexadecimal Notation

This section defines the typographical convention used throughout this book. All hex numbers are followed by an "h." Examples:

Binary Notation

All binary numbers are followed by a "b." Examples:

Numbers without any suffix are decimal. When required for clarity, decimal numbers are followed by a "d." The following examples each represent a decimal number:

Bits Versus Bytes Notation

All abbreviations for "bits" use lowercase. For example:
2.5Gb/s = 2.5 Gigabits per second.
2Mb = 2 Megabits.

All references to "bytes" are specified in upper case. For example:
10MB/s = 10 Megabytes per second.
2KB = 2 Kilobytes.

Other designations:
"lsb" refers to the least-significant bit.
"LSB" refers to the least-significant byte.
"msb" refers to the most-significant bit.
"MSB" refers to the most-significant byte.
Bit Fields (Logical Groups of Bits or Signals)

Dreadful in every way

I am a linux kernel developer, working on a project that involves the open source version of the Infiniband kernel drivers. I figured I'd take advantage of this opportunity and learn as much as possible about Infiniband. I'm still doing that, but without using this book.

This is truly one of the worst technical books I've ever had the misfortune of purchasing. I am returning it now. Aside from being an unreadable jumble of high- and low-level technical notes, even the print quality is spectacularly poor.

The only reason to buy this would be if there is nothing else available. Fortunately, you'll find better information from the Infiniband Trade Association. Fill out the online form, and download all the documents, and you'll be just fine.

Tells HOW to use/implement InfiniBand but not WHY

This book is mainly for the hardware computer designer. It is a comprehensive reference manual for InfiniBand. Typical usage of this book may be by engineers at companies that have already committed to developing InfiniBand supported systems. (Mostly members of the InfiniBand Trade Association.)
What it does not discuss is WHY your company should do such a thing. There is a good reason for this. Mentioning such issues invariably involves quite subjective estimates of future demand for InfiniBand products, and the technological and economic merits of it versus alternatives like Fibre Channel or Ultra SCSI. This can be hazy and contentious. Good for many a flame war on the Internet. Quite rightly, the author decided to stick to the demonstrable facts.
If you are unfamiliar with InfiniBand, as it is still rather new, let me offer an analogy for this book. Compare it to a definitive text on the 7 layer OSI stack or the 5 layer TCP/IP stack. Except that Shanley concentrates on the equivalent of the physical layer and the datalink layer. InfiniBand leaves higher layers to the operating system.
To reiterate: This is an excellent book that teaches you HOW to design an InfiniBand-supported chip or system. But the higher level managerial decision on WHY you would do so needs to be made from other input.

Kind of like a specification

Contained a lot of information - but so does the multi-thousand page Infiniband spec.

This book doesn't really attempt to give a good explanation as to high level concepts - or any type of practical considerations. I would describe it as more-or-less regurgitating a ton of stuff listed in the Infiniband spec - all of which is available in the actual spec.

This book was a cheap-shot to get something voluminous out quickly, while adding little value.
