About the Author

J.S.Ratti  Dr. Ratti has been teaching mathematics at all levels for over 35 years. He is currently a full professor of mathematics and director of the "Center for Mathematical Services" at the University of South Florida. Professor Ratti is the author of numerous research papers in analysis, graph theory, and probability. He has won several awards for excellence in undergraduate teaching at University of South Florida and known as the coauthor of a successful finite mathematics textbook.

 

Marcus McWaters Dr. McWaters is currently the chair of the Mathematics Department at the University of South Florida, a position he has held for the last eight years. Since receiving his PhD in mathematics from the University of Florida, he has taught all levels of undergraduate and graduate courses, with class sizes ranging from 3 to 250. As chair, he has worked intensively to structure a course delivery system for lower level courses that would improve the low retention rate these courses experience across the country. When not involved with mathematics or administrative activity, he enjoys playing racquetball, spending time with his two daughters, and traveling the world with his wife.

I wish we didn't have to use this book

So awful. Whenever we get tested on exercises in this book I am always at a loss as to how to apply the concepts in the chapter. In the back, there are solutions, but no explanations. Which means that, however much I bang my head against the wall, I won't get any closer to enlightenment.

If the questions, and their corresponding solutions in the back of the book, weren't so cryptic, I would give this book a much higher rating. As it is, either the chapters need to be rewritten to incorporate the missing material found in the exercises, or the solutions need to be rewritten so that students can follow them when the chapter doesn't address something.

Books like this are why I grew up thinking I was not good at math. Really, I was just cheated by an education system that insists on quantity over quality. This book covers everything, for sure -- but it glides over the surface and expects you to follow along in depth.

I'm getting a bad grade in this class, and I'm sorry to say, but this book is partly to blame.

Daughter didn't want me to order it. "I don't need that Dad". It didn't take her and her study partner long to begin praising it. Helps them see how to go about working the problems. Certainly cut down on my tutoring time. I highly recommend it.

College Algebra and Trigonometry 2nd edition

The book itself came in excellent condition. Before I ordered the book I called Amazon to make sure the book came with the access code to use myMathLab.com which is necessary to do the book work. He claimed it came with the book cost so I proceeded to place the order. It didn't arrive with the code so after calling back to the Amazon representative he credited me $50 for the inconvenience and sent me a link to acquire the code with the $50 credit. The code was inaccessible with the link and by looking through other resources discovered the code to access the tools on the website was around $85 which was even more money to spend on top of the original cost of the book. I finally gained access to the website to do the book work to discover that it is also in PDF format. Pretty much a waste of money to get the book, and it was too late to return the book after I discovered this.

An amazing book rooted in a sound rhetorical approach

I am using Grant Seeking in an Electronic Age in a graduate writing course for education leaders. I have reviewed a lot of proposal writing books for this class and chose this one because it takes a strategic approach and is based on sound rhetorical principles. The book is logically structured around the process of managing change, which proposal writing is largely about. Not only does it spell out how to identify needs, propose solutions, and find funding for those solutions, but the book also introduces the rhetorical principles that underlie the various communication tasks involved in proposal writing. Each step in the proposal writing process is illustrated with annotated examples that explain why certain rhetorical strategies were effective in a particular case and how they were used.

The authors also have an excellent track record of winning millions of dollars in grants, which adds credibility to their rhetorical approach.

In addition to making an excellent textbook in a proposal writing course, the book is also an indispensable resource for individuals and nonprofits interested in writing proposals to obtain funding.

I recommend not purchasing this book. The book (purchased new for over $70 then express shipped for a grant writing course in graduate school) is literally falling apart. The quality is poor. (the publishers should be ashamed). I agree with another reviewer that the charts are poor. I feel sorry for the authors that this book is of such poor quality from the publisher because I liked the smaller chapters which were written in a clear, concise writing style. However,this book is not for an advanced researcher or writer . . . more tailored to freshmen level.

An Excellent AP Textbook! Got me a 5!

I purchased this textbook to self study for the AP US history exam and can say I was thoroughly satisfied. The text and prose is very well written, you never need to "hunt" for the main point. The information is incredibly good; besides highly detailed resources in the main text, each chapter features an in-depth essay on a certain subject, many of which appeared as multiple choice questions on the 2005 AP exam. Most of the text reads like a detailed story, and keeps one's interest quite well. A note of warning: the authors write this at the college level and students with limited vocabularies may have some difficulty comprehending the text.

Political cartoons and other visual media are very apt and many of the cartoons in the book were the same ones that appeared on my AP and SAT in multiple choice questions.

Some reviewers have complained of a liberal skew, I could certainly see how they would arrive at that conclusion. Chapter titles like "Triumph of the White Man's Democracy" and labeling Columbus as an "invader" seem a bit presumptuous. Additionally, the book tends to put a disproportionate emphasis on women/minorites, however, so does the AP examination. Divine seems not to be so much as liberal, but as challenging commonly held assumptions. For instance, he makes it very clear that FDR's New Deal plan did nothing to bring America out of the Great depression, it only made the period until WWII bearable for some. Divine is quick to criticize the failures of Wilson's 14 points and the economic crisis imposed by the Carter administration. Either way, Divine has facts to back up his statements, facts which can easily be incorporated into AP essays requiring an opinion.

This is a very nice textbook, and is meant for those who have already had a background in history. I use it for my AP class and really like it. The book reads very well - unlike a lot of history books it doesn't use complex grammar and spelling to sound sophisticated - and has a lot of detail as well as a liberal and well-founded opinion; in addition it has very good diagrams, illustrations, and a chronology for each chapter. It is a real book - there are no built in study guides, self review, or page-consuming explainations of simple concepts that most textbooks have. I reccomend this for all who wish to seriously study history, but not for those who want to skim a book for a quick review.

An Atrocity

I am an egineering major at Cornell University and had to use this book in two introductory level calculus courses. It is probably a mistake to say I used it in those courses. Indeed, it would be more accurate to say I was subjected to this book. The text converts what is already a difficult subject into an ordeal involving many many many hours of agnoizing frustration. Statements of theorems are overly complicated and take a great deal of effort to decode. The derivations of such theorems are not explained, nor do they make sense. There are very few examples in the text, and those examples that are given have virtually no explanations whatsoever. I found that reading the text often involved staring at a single page for a full half hour trying to figure what the blazes they are talking about. Indeed, after reading this book I usually found myself more confused than I was beforehand. Had I not gone out and purchased a number of books by different authors, I definitly would have failed both courses. This book does nothing but to stupefy the reader, not quite what you want if you are trying to understand triple integrals and Green's Theorem. Stay away from this book at all costs. It is an atrocity. If you are unfortunate enough to come across a copy of this book, do not hesitate to burn it with extreme prejudice.

Couldn't agree more - awful textbook

I agree with the Cornell engineering student completely. I have a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics, and have been tutoring my son who is a computer engineering major. Unfortunately he is stuck with this terrible excuse for a textbook. The explanations are just plain poor. The examples are generally very simple problems, then you get to the exercises that are three times as complicated and for which there are no examples to give you a clue how to work. And why is it that the even problems for which there are no answers are considerably harder than the odd problems? The book only provides a place for the instructor to assign problems. There is very little useful instruction. If you are unfortunate enough to be stuck with this book for a textbook, immediately go buy some other books to help you learn the subject. For first semester calculus, the Dummies books and the Idiots Guide are not too bad. But believe me, you will not learn Calculus from this book. The author may know the subject, but he doesn't have a clue how to communicate it to someone else.

Make that three...

It's not quite abysmal, but it's close. The explanations are unclear; the examples, as noted, are horribly simple; and when you need to refer back to something earlier, it's hard to find. Thankfully I have a copy of Calculus: Early Transcendentals Single and Multivariable by Anton, Bivens, & Davis that I can use to figure out what's going on. If you're stuck with this book, I suggest you find a better textbook to use as a reference and just get your homework problems out of this one.

Faulty, Biased, and Unable to Teach

This particular textbook was required for AP World History in my school. As an individual with great prior knowlege of the history of humanity, I was shocked by the dearth of actual facts the book provides in nearly every chapter. Most sentences Stearns writes as factual are almost always summary of a multitude of events which could be expanded with greater understanding for the reader. He rarely utilizes chronological dates, which has caused many in my class to confuse the chronological order of events and generally creating a situation where students not already familiar with history are almost completley unaware of the actual nature of the history the text is trying to teach.

The text is written with more regard to political correctness than important fact in most cases, even going so far as to justify Aztec human sacrifice in one instance and deamonizing the Spaniards who brought it to a stop. The chapters almost always devote disproportional attention to gender relations and other things which often are mentioned more than the actual achievements of respective nations and empires the text discusses.

Furthermore, the textbook makes so much of an effort to avoid Eurocentricism that it quickly becomes mostly Euro-dismissive, speaking negativley of European nations in any way that can be found while the other nations have faults downplayed and mentioned in passing.

Overall, the lack of actual facts, political correctness, neglect of important civilizations for concentration on aimless chapters on unimportant places in certain periods of time, and the attitude of Anti-Westernism make the text both a poor learning tool, and a highly subjective and biased collection of Stearns' opinions rather than an effective one with an objective look at history.

Helpful Book - good for students

Other reviews seem to focus on the fact that the newer edition doesn't have enough "new stuff." The examples are updated, the listed websites are updated, there are several expanded sections. Technical writing isn't like neuroscience or some field that is rapidly expanding, so it's not going to have huge new sections of material. If there is any drawback to the book, it's that it covers EVERYTHING which may be overwhelming if you are just want to pick up a quick reference.

Overall it's a good book particularly if you are using it for a class where you have an instructor who can take you into more depth on each topic. It's not a Stephen King style page turner, but obviously that's not what it's trying to be.

Recommended for savvy readers and students.

This book is a step-by-step instruction to different kinds of technical writing. It is easy to understand and follow. The topics are well organized and clearly outlined, which makes it easy to read.

It's a nice reference book if you have to look up different writing styles.

Tech Comm Textbook

This book is a niche filler. It presents very little useful information. It expounds upon and gives examples of obvious and common-sense ideas, wasting rather a lot of ink. I'm sure Mr. Lannon is a nice guy, but my bet is he is a bit dull. The plus side is that the book is quite colorful and laid out logically, but it just really doesn't feel like college material.
