AS A FAIRLY PUBLIC figure in the Windows developer community, Chris often gets asked if he thinks that .NET is going to "take off." He always answers the same way: it's not a matter of "if," it's a matter of "when."

Microsoft's .NET Framework has so many benefits that even C++/Win32 veterans find it hard to resist the siren song of a managed development environment. It's ironic that the temporary dip in the economy has caused folks to avoid anything new just when .NET came along to deliver significant reductions in time to market and cost while simultaneously increasing code quality. The organizations that have already adopted .NET know that it's going to have a long and happy life, especially as it gets pushed further and further into Microsoft's own plans for the future of the Windows platform, both on the server and on the client.

The primary server-side technology in .NET is ASP.NET, which provides the infrastructure needed to build Web sites and Web services. ASP.NET gives developers the reach to deploy Web sites to anyone by aiming at the baseline of features offered by the middle-generation Web browsers. To provide the highest level of functionality possible, ASP.NET does most of the work on the server side, leaving the client-side HTML as a thin wrapper to trigger server-side requests for new pages of data. The server side handles almost everything, from data manipulation to user preferences to the rendering of simple things like menus and toolbars. This model provides the greatest availability across operating systems and browsers.

If, on the other hand, your targeted customers are Windows users, an HTML-based experience limits your users to a lowest-common-denominator approach that is unnecessary. In fact, in an attempt to provide a richer client-side experience, many organizations that know they're targeting Windows users require specific versions of Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) Web browser. As soon as that kind of targeting happens, IE becomes less of a browser and more of an HTML-based application run time. For that purpose, the HTML object model is fairly primitive, often requiring that you do a lot of work to do things that are usually simple (like keeping track of a user's session state). If you're targeting Windows users, the .NET Framework gives you a much richer set of objects for building interactive user interfaces.

This brings us to the subject of this book: Windows Forms (WinForms). WinForms is the face of .NET on the client, providing a forms-based development environment meant to embody the best of the UI object models that have come before it. In addition, it has one feature that no Windows based development framework has provided to date: the deployment features of HTML-based Web applications. The ability to combine the richness of Windows applications with the deployment of Web applications signals a completely new world for Windows developers, one that makes us more than happy to give up the mess of unmanaged code.

Who Should Read This Book?

When writing this book, we had two target audiences in mind. We wanted to provide real-world WinForms coverage for both the programmer who has already programmed in .NET and for the programmer who hasn't. Toward that end, we briefly introduce core .NET topics as they come up. However, the .NET Framework itself is a large area that this book doesn't pretend to cover completely. Instead, when we think more information would be useful, we reference another work that provides the full details. In particular, we find that we've referenced Essential .NET, by Don Box, with Chris Sells, a great deal, making it a good companion to this book. In this same category, we also recommend Pragmatic ADO.NET, by Shawn Wildermuth, Advanced .NET Remoting, by Ingo Rammer, .NET Web Services, by Keith Ballinger, and Applied Microsoft .NET Framework Programming, by Jeffrey Richter. (For more details on these books, see the Bibliography.)

Two core .NET topics are of special importance to WinForms programmers, and we cover them in more detail in Appendix B: Delegates and Events and in Appendix C: Serialization Basics. The coverage of delegates and events is particularly important if you're new to .NET, although I don't recommend diving into that topic until you've got a WinForms-specific frame of reference (which is provided about one-third of the way through Chapter 1: Hello, Windows Forms).

One other note: This book covers none of the standard controls completely. Instead, as each control is interesting in the context of the current topic—such as the DataGrid control in Chapter 13: Data Binding and Data Grids—that control is covered appropriately. Also, Chapter 8: Controls and Chapter 9: Design-Time Integration introduce the broad range of categories of controls that WinForms provides, including the category of nonvisual controls called components in .NET.

Finally, to give you a visual to go with all the controls and components and to introduce you to each one's major functionality, Appendix D: Standard WinForms Components and Controls provides a list of the standard controls and components. We wouldn't think of wasting your time by attempting to be more thorough than the reference documentation that comes with the .NET Framework SDK and Visual Studio .NET. Instead, this book focuses on the real-world scenarios that aren't covered in detail elsewhere.

If you have decided to take the plunge with this book, we'd like to thank you for your faith and express our hope that we live up to it. To aid you in reading the text, we want to let you in on some conventions we've used.

First and foremost, the wonderful thing about WinForms is how visual it is, and that's why we use a lot of figures to illustrate its features. Some of those pictures really need to be in color to make the point, so be sure to check the color pages at the center of this book for those color plates.

As useful as figures are, we think primarily in code. Code is shown in

Some languages, such as C#, let you drop the "Attribute" suffix for convenience, but that makes it hard to pin down the details of the attribute class in the online documentation.

Also, we sometimes omit error checking from the printed code for clarity, but we try to leave it in the sample code that comes with this book. In the prose itself, we often put a word or phrase in italics to indicate a new term that we're about to define. As an example of this kind of term and its definition, hegemony is a preponderant influence or authority, as well as a potent business practice.

Finally, we often mention keyboard shortcuts because we find them convenient. The ones we mention are the default Visual Studio Developer key bindings. If you're not using those key bindings, you'll need to map he keyboard shortcuts to your own settings.

In-depth practical knowledge from a master

Before I rave about this title, let me start with a caveat. This is not a beginner's "Learn VB.NET" or "Learn to Program" book - it's for intermediate to advanced programmers.
That being said, this is a great book for anyone who actually needs to do _real_work_ (shudder) with Windows Forms.
Unlike a lot of books out there, this isn't a huge tome that rehashes the MSDN docs or goes into all the minutiae of Microsoft's latest GUI framework. Instead, Mr. Sells has condensed much of his deep knowledge of WinForms into these chapters, detailing many of the traps you need to avoid - and tricks you'll need to use - if you want to create WinForms apps that do more than just say "hello world".
The author is a true expert on Windows Forms. I don't know how he did it, but he knows stuff - key stuff - that you can't find in any of the written docs from Microsoft. He shares this vital information in a style that is both logical and concise.
IMO, if you need to build WinForms apps, this book will return the money you spend on it many times over.

Chris is the Man

Building UI's can be a real pain, but it's a great feeling when you know you built a great UI. This book can get you there in a hurry. This is one of those books thats so fun to read you actually forget you are learning some really great techniques.

If you are an advnaced developer, I think there are some great ideas in here and they certainly explain a lot of the how's and why's that you may have missed. If you are a newbie, this book will save you tons of time and effort stumbling around.

Content wise it's superb. Every chapter was compelling and interesting.

Editorially - great, I have yet to find any typos or grammar problems, and the code all works.

I also really like the layout of the book. The examples are great, everything is clear and easy to understand; they just did a really good job on this.

Another book for the student of art to read? I can only echo William James's report of the unwed mother's defense: "It's such a little baby."

Still, a few additional words may be useful. Everyone knows that students today do not write as well as they used to. Probably they never did, but it is a truth universally acknowledged (by English teachers) that the cure is not harder work from instructors in composition courses; rather, the only cure is a demand, on the part of the entire faculty, that students in all classes write decently. But instructors outside of departments of English understandably say that they lack the time—and perhaps the skill—to teach writing in addition to, say, art.

This book may offer a remedy. Students who read it—and it is short enough to be read in addition to whatever texts the instructor regularly requires— should be able to improve their essays

by getting ideas both about works of art and about approaches to art, from the first four chapters ("Writing about Art," "Analysis," "Writing a Comparison," "How to Write an Effective Essay"), and from Chapter 6 ("Some Critical Approaches")

As Robert Frost said, writing is a matter of having ideas. This book tries to help students to have ideas by suggesting questions they may ask themselves as they contemplate works of art. After all, instructors want papers that say something, papers with substance, not papers whose only virtue is that they are neatly typed and that the footnotes are in the proper form.

One is reminded of a story that Giambologna (1529-1608) in his old age told about himself. The young Flemish sculptor (his original name was jean de Boulogne), having moved to Rome, went to visit the aged Michelangelo. To show what he could do, Giambologna brought with him a carefully finished, highly polished wax model of a sculpture. The master took the model, crushed it, shaped it into something very different from Giambologna's original, and handed it back, saying, "Now learn the art of modeling before you learn the art of finishing." This story about Michelangelo as a teacher is harrowing, but it is also edifying (and it is pleasant to be able to say that Giambologna reportedly told it with pleasure). The point of telling it here is not to recommend a way of teaching; the point is that a highly finished surface is all very well, but we need substance first of all. A good essay, to repeat, says something.

A Short Guide to Writing about Art contains notes and two sample essays by students, an essay by a professor, and numerous model paragraphs by students and by published scholars such as Rudolf Arnheim, Albert Elsen, Mary D. Garrard, Anne Hollander, and Leo Steinberg. These discussions, as well as the numerous questions that are suggested, should help students to understand the sorts of things one says, and the ways one says them, when writing about art. After all, people do write about art, not only in the classroom but in learned journals, catalogs, and even in newspapers and magazines.

A NOTE ON THE SIXTH EDITION

I have been in love with painting ever since I became conscious of it at the age of six. I drew some pictures which I thought fairly good when I was fifty, but really nothing I did before the age of seventy was of any value at all. At seventy-three I have at last caught every aspect of nature— birds, fish, animals, insects, trees, grasses, all. When I am eighty I shall have developed still further, and will really master the secrets of art at ninety. When I reach one hundred my art will be truly sublime, and my final goal will be attained around the age of one hundred and ten, when every line and dot I draw will be imbued with life.

Probably all artists share Hokusai's self-assessment. And so do all writers of textbooks. Each edition of this book seemed satisfactory to me when I sent the manuscript to the publisher, but with the passing not of decades but of only a few months I detected inadequacies, and I wanted to say new things. This sixth edition, therefore, not only includes sixth thoughts about many topics discussed in the preceding editions but it also introduces new topics.

The emphasis is still twofold— on seeing and saying, or on getting ideas about art (Chapters 1-4) and on presenting those ideas effectively in writing (Chapters 5-8)— but this edition includes new thoughts about these familiar topics, as well as thoughts about new topics. For instance, the pages concerned with generating ideas contain new material about:

the uses of the Internet

Much of the new material concerned with generating ideas responds to relatively new trends in the study of art. Today an interest in political, economic, and social implications of art has in large measure replaced the h earlier interest in matters of style, authenticity, and quality. In short, contemporary interest seems to have moved from the text to the context, from the artwork as a unique object with its distinctive meaning to the artwork as a manifestation of something more important (gender, politics, ethnicity), from aesthetics to a criticism of social and political cultures. This shift in the study of art is a response to a shift in art itself— the shift from Modernism to Post-Modernism. In the first half of the twentieth century, art— in the movement called Modernism— sloughed off the earlier concern with subject matter, illusionism, and beauty; what F counted was the artist's sensibility. Post-Modernism, rejecting this elite ` sensibility, sees artists as deeply embedded in their society, understood only in the context of that society. The emphasis is now on the historical conditions governing the production and consumption of art.

Nevertheless, A Short Guide continues to give generous space to the formal analysis of art. I continue to use the term art rather than visual culture, though I uneasily recall Andy Warhol's observation that in America most people think that Art is a man's name. I grant, too, that visual culture has the advantage of including works— for instance, boomerangs, nose rings, and Native American feathered bonnets— that we might call art but that are not called art by the cultures that produced them. Indeed, one has only to do a very little reading to learn that many languages do not include a word for art; apparently no Native American language has such a word, and the Japanese invented such a word only after coming into contact with European ideas. My use of art, then, should be considered not only affection for an old word but also shorthand for visual culture.

Handy reference work

My Art History department adopted this book as its official style-manual a few years ago, and we assign it as a textbook for our writing and methodology class. To my great dismay, however, our bookstore has had some trouble ordering it this year, and so I have encouraged my students to "cut the Gordion knot" by ordering it from Amazon. The chapters on choosing a topic and organizing an argument are, I think, useful and well-written, but the greatest value of this book is Chapters 9 and 10, which provide clear instructions for writing footnotes and bibliography. This may be a mechanical task, but it is a frustrating one for many students, because there are so many possible formats to use (MLA, Turabian, etc.) Barnet's system has the virtue of being designed specifically for research papers about art and art history, and the format he recommends is clear and logical. The book also reprints the instructions for contributors from the Art Bulletin, the most prestigious art-historical journal in this country, and so will be of value for graduate students and recent PhD's preparing their first works for publication.

Dick Gets it RIGHT!

This is a MUST READ for all reading teachers, administrators and teachers. Dick is not an "ivory tower" researcher, but one who is out in classrooms observing and talking with kids and teachers. This book is a simple guide to make EVERY school reading program successful - IF teachers will follow the advice offered. Kids learn to read by reading, so let them read. The book itself is an easy read. My copy is highlighted in 3 colors and looks like a rainbow with the wealth of information it offers. Go DO IT!

Great book for parents too

I bought the book in search of ways to help my 6 year old overcome apparent reading difficulties. This book is so well grounded on scientific findings rather than hearsays. Yet it also provides guidelines for tutoring struggling readers and pointers to various resources. After reading this book, I realized that my child had the typical word-by-word problem described in the book, most likely due to interrupting corrections to his pronunciation. This book taught me how essential it is to use books of the right level and the right way to tutor a struggling reader. I put what I learned into practice during a recent vocation and saw great improvement even just after one week. Now my son no longer feels frustrated when asked to read, rather he starts to enjoy reading. I really wish that my son�s teacher had read this book, but I am glad I found it. This book really makes me in awe of the power of knowledge gained through serious scientific research. I recommend it wholeheartedly to parents and teachers alike.

Great read,insightful- teachers this is a must read!!

Allington does a great job of synthesizing the research, which honestly is sometimes written dry and dull. This book is not written that way. His writing is clear, chapters are well organized, and his recommendations are full of research citations so you can check it. If you are looking to revamp or improve reading instruction at your school/classroom or ready to give up on struggling readers...DONT! Instead, read this book!! There are so many practical suggestions that one could apply right away. I had to read this for my graduate course, and I'm so glad that I did. This one's a keeper that I know I'll keep coming back to reference over and over again!

Jeff Putz is the founder of POP World Media, LLC, a company formed originally to organize several hobby Web sites into a bona fide business. Microsoft has endowed Web developers with a gift. Since its introduction to the masses in beta form in 2001, the .NET Framework and its ASP.NET subset have changed the way we look at building Web applications. Indeed, before this time, many of us didn't even think in terms of "applications" but rather collections of loosely related scripts that together formed a Web site.

Making this transition required a serious leap of faith and a great deal of new learning for a lot of developers. Scripting languages such as ASP 3.0, ColdFusion, and PHP made it fairly easy for someone with little or no programming experience to quickly learn about the platform and start building dynamic Web sites. Years of experience as a developer or an academic background in computer science were not necessary.

That background still isn't necessary, but with ASP.NET, script developers need to make some fairly radical changes in their thinking to get the most out of this amazing platform. This book aims to help you with that transition, or to get you familiar with the platform's architecture if you're already well versed in object-oriented design.

Why Was This Book Written?

In watching the various message boards and newsgroups around the Internet, it became clear to me that a lot of very smart developers are having some problems making the transition to the object-oriented world of ASP.NET. As much as we praise Microsoft for delivering the platform to us, we can also curse them for making it so inviting and safe because it doesn't force you to follow the "best practices" they envisioned. You can do things in almost the same way you did when you were using a scripting platform.

It would be easy to create a straight book on techniques or a "cookbook" of sorts to help you along, but what I'm really after is a guide that helps you understand the underlying concepts and architecture to the platform so that you can apply the same concepts to your own applications. Indeed, I point out in the second chapter that the code you write isn't any different than the code that Microsoft wrote into the thousands of existing .NET base classes. A cookbook or overview wouldn't help you understand this.

This book is not meant to evangelize object-oriented techniques. The idea is to show you enough rationale behind the concepts to encourage you to use them. I want light bulbs to go off in your head that say, "Oh yeah, I get it!" Using OOP just for the sake of doing so is not good.

Who Is This Book For?

This book assumes that you've already taken the first steps in learning about ASP.NET and have a relatively basic grasp of either the C# or Visual Basic .NET languages. It is also assumed that you have some basic understanding of how to use Microsoft SQL Server and understand what a relational database is. You might be a developer who in a previous life was primarily a script developer and wants to "get" the platform and its strong object-oriented architecture. You might also be a more seasoned developer who just wants to get into some of the platform-specific details of ASP.NET that make things tick under the hood. These developers may choose to skip around a bit.

Regardless of the camp you might be in, this book is all about context. Developers are generally very smart people, and they don't learn by memorization, they learn by understanding. This book takes the basics of object-oriented programming and applies them to ASP.NET and Visual Studio to give the reader a more rounded skillset that includes application design, test-driven development, code reuse, modularization, and an eye on performance. The book puts Microsoft's platform into context by moving beyond the "how" and into the "why," not just explaining the concepts but also selling them as the best way to solve real problems. If you come from a scripting background or want to make your skills more applicable to other areas of .NET programming, this book is for you.

If you are totally new to ASP.NET, this book isn't for you—yet. You should start with one of the many ASP.NET books that have "beginner" or "introduction" in the title. When you've got the basics, come back to this book to round out and strengthen your knowledge. We won't cover basics such as master pages, user controls, connecting to a database, configuring FormsAuthentication, and so on.

I want to say up front that the term "best practice" is a bit of a misnomer. Some concepts and methodologies are certainly better than others, but this term implies that universal truths abound in the world of programming. Some might believe that the only real universal truths are death and taxes, so while you read about what I believe are best practices, keep in mind that there's plenty of room for interpretation based on your experience and the business problems you're trying to solve. As with anything else, use what works and adapt it to your needs.

Part I: The Leap to Object-Oriented Programming

Chapter 1, "The Object Model." Object-oriented programming has been around for ages, but it's a new concept for developers with a scripting background. You'll learn that everything is an object in .NET, including your own code. We'll analogize the concept of object-oriented programming to the classic example of the structure and use of cars.

Chapter 2, "Classes: The Code Behind the Objects." After you see what an object is and how it contains some kind of functionality, we'll get into the nuts and bolts of writing a class. You'll learn about the instantiation of objects, inheritance, protection levels, static methods, enumerations, and interfaces.

Chapter 3, "Class Design." A class can serve many different purposes in an application. Your classes can execute a block of code, much as the familiar System.Web.UI.Page class does, and at times they can do nothing other than group data together. More useful classes can do all these things.

Chapter 4, "Application Architecture." Apart from ASP.NET, the n-tier approach to application development can make even the largest projects easier to build, deploy, and maintain. We'll take a look at this common design pattern and address when and when not to use it.

Chapter 5, "Object-Oriented Programming Applied: A Custom Data Class." This chapter presents you with a practical example of class design that manipulates database data and even caches it for better performance. This model shows you the payoff of object-oriented code, where you write it once and use it many times.

Part II: The ASP.NET Architecture

Chapter 6, "The Nuts and Bolts of IIS and Web Applications." Regardless of how you code your application, the files, folders, and assemblies need to be in the right places to make everything work.

Chapter 7, "The ASP.NET Event Model." Every request by users of your application has a fascinating life cycle. By understanding and following that life cycle, you can intervene or perform certain actions at just the right time to get the most out of your application. The execution of page, application, and control events is covered.

Chapter 8, "HttpHandlers and HttpModules." ASP.NET can do so much more than produce pages, and HttpHandlers and HttpModules are just the tools you'll need for special requests. I'll give you an example of a handler that will protect your images from being bandwidth leeched.

Chapter 9, "Server Controls." You might find that you use the same combination of controls frequently or that an existing control doesn't meet your needs. Building your own isn't that hard, and it's exactly the same process used by Microsoft to create many of the controls you already use.

Chapter 10, "Web Services as Objects." It's easy to create a Web service from your existing code, and it's easy to create a proxy class that consumes the service. What might not be as obvious is that Web services enable you to use that remote code as if it were an object local to your application.

Chapter 11, "Membership and Security." ASP.NET has a rich set of classes to help you control access to your site and verify who your users are. You can use little or no code to identify your users, or extend the system to make your own custom solution. You'll learn how to develop a custom Membership provider to connect the system to your own data.

Chapter 12, "Profiles, Themes, and Skins." Chances are you'll want to keep more than just a user's email and password, and again the ASP.NET team has made it possible to store this data with little effort on your part. You can also take the leap to extend the system with your own provider. Your users' preferences can be tied into an extensive skinning system so they don't have to live with your site's "look."

Chapter 13, "Declarative Programming." With all this talk of object-oriented code, what is declarative programming, and where does it fit? We'll cover some of the common controls and their uses available in ASP.NET.

How to build applications, not just pages using ASP.NET 2

This book attempts to teach developers how to use ASP.NET *correctly* to build applications, rather than pages. However, the author has tried to cover too much ground in a book of only 336 pages.

The first two chapters attempt to teach non-OOP programmers how to do OOP programming in both C# and VB.NET. The lack of detail and exhaustive examples make this nothing more than a review for experienced OOP programmers. Anyone seeking to learn OOP programming from these 34 pages will be disappointed.

The rest of the book comes closer to meeting his objective. His constant discussion of coding to interfaces and n-tier development are the high points of this book, and this alone would be reason for some developers to buy the book.

The author excels in giving a lot of insights into new coding techniques, and even declarative programming that are new in ASP.NET 2.0. Most of the book uses ASP.NET 2.0 examples, but beta 2 had not yet been released, so there may be some changes needed to some of his code examples when the final version of ASP.NET 2.0 is released. I couldn't find any errata online, but I hope they publish any changes that may be needed.

The book sometimes uses code samples from the author's free POP Forums application as a real-world case-study. He gives some small code snippets, and he explains his methodology. It's not bad from an architecture viewpoint: he has abstracted his data layer to such an extent that you only code to an interface. This is a good idea, and it lets you plug in a whole different low-level tier to replace SQL Server with Access, for example.

He explains the trade-offs involved in separating the data-access tier from the business object tier, and his discussion is both interesting and quite relevant to real-world programming.

He covers caching thoroughly with practical code examples that go well beyond the simple coverage you see in many books. He gives an excellent explanation of advanced concepts like HTTP Handlers, HTTP Modules, and server controls, but his coverage of web services seems to head off in an odd direction, and there is no mention of Service Oriented Architecture.

The membership and security features of ASP.NET 2.0 are well-explained and he even explains how to build your own membership provider! Likewise, when he covers Profiles, Themes, and Skins he also explains how to build your own profile provider.

There is no discussion of exception handling in a multi-tier web application, and I could not see any exception handling code in any of his examples. To be fair, this code might exist in the version of POP Forums source code you can download from his site, but it seems to me a book on Maximizing ASP.NET should probably discuss this important aspect of application architecture.

One of the poorly written areas is chapter 14. After spending most of the book discussing ASP.NET 2.0, chapter 14 mysteriously drops back to cover some simple configuration settings of Visual Studio 2003, and he doesn't even give us any insight on what settings we might want to change in either Visual Studio 2003 or Visual Studio 2005.

One of the best chapters in the book covers Test-Driven Development (TDD), using the freeware NUnit tool. This is only an introduction to NUnit, but it's an important tool that fits in well with modern agile software development methodologies.

His last chapter on advanced topics is a bit like flying over a city at 30,000 feet and having the stewardess point out interesting places below. Each of the advanced topics he covers should have been a separate chapter all by themselves: streams, networking, and threading.

On balance, this is an interesting book that would have great value in teaching new, but somewhat experienced, ASP.NET developers how to move up from coding simple applications to do things in a more Enterprise-friendly, scalable manner using many of the new features in ASP.NET 2.0.

Extremely readable developer's guide to developing ASP.NET

I cannot say enough good about this text. I find the author very readable and literate. The examples are clearly written and well commented.

The concepts/tasks involved in developing real ASP.NET applications (vs. simply a series of script based pages) is a long needed next step for developers coming from a more script-based background. And for developers used to writing desktop applications it draws on the techniques we have learned then expands them into using ASP.NET 2.0 to create full strength ASP.NET web applications.

The examples well commented and consistent. Because examples are given in both VB.NET and C#, I even have learned enough C# to be dangereous...but I will do that in private and wash my hands afterwards... ;)

The techniques presented will serve me well for years to come and also increased my understanding of the .NET Object Model...

Thanks to Jeff for a wonderful reference I will use for a long time. Can't wait to see what comes next...

One of the few books that takes you beyond the API.

I found this book, while looking around for a book that goes beyond writing 20 line sample pages, and examines how a well-designed ASP.NET application should be built.

Although I did not come from an ASP background, this book does emphasize how one's thinking should change when making the move from ASP (or any similar technology, such as PHP), to ASP.NET. If the point of this book had to be summed up in a single sentence, it could be the author's claim that "an ASP.NET application is more than just a bunch of pages", as many ASP sites seem to be.

The beginning of the book is only for those who still need to be converted to OOP, and it argues the case for designing classes for your business objects, instead of just passing around a bunch of strings or integers. From there, other ideas, built on top of that start, are introduced, like creating an object-relational data layer, so that your business code can deal with objects, their properties and methods, instead of SQL statements, results sets, and fields.

There are other topics covered in the book, like server controls, or HTTP handlers, but the author's argument for a layered or multi-tier design is the most significant, because it is what almost every other ASP.NET book lacks.

This book is light on its coverage of ASP.NET's API, or C#/VB syntax. Pick up any of the dozen books on ASP.NET to learn the syntax, and the API. This is an idea book. It doesn't cover every little detail, but it gives you an understanding of how, in principle, a manageable web application can be be designed.
