Windows System Programming (3rd Edition), by Johnson M. Hart

"If you're a systems-level 32-bit or 64-bit Windows developer, whether using the Windows API directly or via .NET interop, you'll definitely want to take a look at this update to Johnson Hart's well-respected and well-loved book. Johnson starts with Windows history and cultural issues and moves through basic and advanced system services in a thoughtful, thorough manner. If Mr. Rogers wrote a book with David Cutler, this is what they'd come up with."
–Chris Sells, Longhorn Content Strategist,
Microsoft Corporation

"While focusing on UNIX developers that are looking to augment their skills or simply jump ship, Windows System Programming, Third Edition is a book that even some seasoned systems-level Windows developers will undoubtedly find useful. This is not your average bland GUI treatise; Hart takes you down to the metal, explains all the relevant concepts clearly and in-depth, and gives you an extensive library of high-quality code examples that can be easily adapted for your own larger applications. Even if you've created server applications before, Windows System Programming will teach you new tricks, shed new light on concepts you thought you'd mastered, and offer new strategies for creating robust and secure solutions."
–Klaus H. Probst, Senior Architect,
Spherion Technology Services; Microsoft MVP

"This book is quite easy to follow; there are clear explanations of everything. Even the explanation of the standards is readable! For a developer not familiar with developing with Windows, Hart's book also provides basic information on where Windows was and where it is today, plus a great explanation of how it is different from Posix and Unix."
–Eric Landes, Microsoft MVP,
www.aspalliance.com/corporatecoder

"Even advanced developers will always need to have a book like this one on hand when the abstractions of a platform like .NET are inadequate or when they need to know more about how .NET is implemented. And the focus on low-level programming (specifically memory management and IO) and other non-GUI topics makes it stand out as superior among other Windows programming books. In keeping the GUI focus to a minimum, Hart's book is able to be comprehensive on the topics contained within."
–Michael Davidson, IT Analyst

Windows System Programming, Third Edition gives a solid grounding on using the core Windows APIs, includingWin64; is updated for Windows Server 2003, Windows XP, and the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET Framework, and has extensive examples illustrate all topics and show performance impact and tradeoffs

A practical guide to the central features and functions of the Windows API, Windows System Programming, Third Edition, will get you up and running with Windows XP and 2003, as well as other Windows systems. Unlike most Windows programming resources, this book focuses exclusively on the core system services–file system, memory, processes and threads, synchronization, communication, and security–rather than on the more commonly featured graphical user interface functions. Especially geared for those already familiar with UNIX or other high-end operating systems, Windows System Programming, Third Edition, helps you to build on your knowledge base to learn the most important features quickly and easily.

This new edition has been updated and enhanced with coverage of new API functions, network programming, Windows Services, process and thread management, synchronization, and application performance on single and multiprocessor systems. It also describes techniques for porting applications to Win64, the new Windows 64-bit API.

Beginning with an examination of the features required in a single-process application, the text gradually progresses to increasingly sophisticated functions relating to a multithreaded environment. Each chapter contains realistic examples to illustrate the topics. You will find extensive coverage of such critical Windows topics as:

  • File and directory management
  • Character I/O and Unicode
  • The registry
  • Structured exception handling
  • Security services
  • Memory management and DLLs
  • Threads, process management, and scheduling
  • Thread synchronization, including the condition variable model for event and mutex usage
  • Interprocess communication, featuring pipes and mailslots
  • Network programming with sockets
  • Developing Windows Services
  • Timers,Asynchronous I/O, and I/O completion ports
  • Guidelines and trade-offs to improve application performance and reliability
  • Win64, covering architecture, data types, and legacy code migration

Short, practical examples illustrate each topic and are included on the companion Web site (www.awprofessional.com/titles/0321256190). The appendixes provide performance measurements and compare Windows, UNIX, and the C library.

This book describes application development using the Microsoft Windows Application Programming Interface (API), concentrating on the core system services, including the file system, process and thread management, interprocess communication, network programming, and synchronization. User interfaces, internals, and I/O drivers, although important and interesting topics, are beyond the book's scope. The examples concentrate on realistic scenarios, and in many cases the examples can be used as the foundations for real applications.

The Win32/Win64 API, or the Windows API, is supported by Microsoft's family of 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems, which currently consists of Windows XP, Windows 2000, and Windows 2003. Older Windows family members include Windows NT, Me, 98, and 95; these systems are considered obsolete, but they will run many of the example programs. Migration issues from Win32 to the emerging Win64 are discussed as required. Win64, supported as a 64-bit interface on some versions of Windows 2003 and XP, is nearly identical to Win32.

There is no doubt that the Windows API is an important factor for application development, in many cases replacing the POSIX API, supported by UNIX and Linux, as the preferred, or at least peer, API for applications targeted at desktop and server systems. Therefore, many experienced programmers will want to learn the Windows API quickly, and this book is designed to help them do so.

The first objectives are to explain what Windows is, show how to use it in realistic situations, and do so as quickly as possible without burdening the reader with unnecessary detail. This book is, therefore, not a reference guide, but it explains the central features of the most important functions and shows how to use them in practical programming situations. Equipped with this knowledge, the reader will be able to use the comprehensive Microsoft reference documentation to explore details, advanced options, and the more obscure functions as requirements or interests dictate. I have found the Windows API easy to learn using this approach, and I have greatly enjoyed developing Windows programs, despite occasional frustration. This enthusiasm will show through at times, as it should. This does not mean that I feel that Windows is necessarily better than other operating system (OS) APIs, but it certainly has many attractive features.

Many Windows books spend a great deal of time explaining how processes, virtual memory, interprocess communication, and preemptive scheduling work without showing how to use them in realistic situations. A programmer experienced in UNIX, Linux, IBM MVS, OpenVMS, or another OS will be familiar with these concepts and will be impatient to find out how they are implemented in Windows. Most Windows books also spend a great deal of space on user interface programming. This book avoids the user interface, beyond discussing simple character-based console I/O, in the interest of concentrating on the important core features.

The book takes the point of view that Windows is just an OS API, providing a well-understood set of features. Many programmers, regardless of experience level, need to learn Windows quickly, and an understanding of Windows is invaluable in discussing subjects such as Microsoft's Component Object Model (COM). The Windows systems, when compared with other systems, have good, bad, and average features and quality. The purpose of this book is to show how to use those features efficiently and in realistic situations to develop useful, high-quality, and high-performance applications.

Audience
  • Anyone who wants to learn about Windows application development quickly, regardless of previous experience.
  • Programmers and software engineers who must port existing applications, often in UNIX, to Windows for operation on any of the Windows platforms. The book contains many comparisons among Windows, UNIX, and standard C library functions and programming models. All common UNIX functionality, including process management, synchronization, file systems, and interprocess communication, is covered in Windows terms.
  • Readers starting new projects who are not constrained by the need to port existing code. Many aspects of program design and implementation are covered, and Windows functions are used to create useful applications and to solve common programming problems.
  • Programmers using COM and .NET Framework, who will find much of the information here helpful in understanding dynamic link libraries (DLLs), thread usage and models, interfaces, and synchronization.
  • Computer science students at the upper-class undergraduate or beginning graduate level in courses covering systems programming or application development. This book will also be useful to those who are learning multithreaded programming or need to build networked applications. This book would be a useful complementary text to a book such as W. Richard Stevens' Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment (see the Bibliography) so that students could compare Windows and UNIX. Students in OS courses will find this book to be a useful supplement as it illustrates how a commercially important OS provides essential OS functionality.

The only other assumption, implicit in all the others, is a knowledge of C programming.

Changes in the Third Edition

The third edition presents extensive new material along with significant updating and reorganization of the first and second editions. Objectives of the third edition include the following

  • Cover important new features of Windows XP, 2000, and 2003 along with Win64 migration.
  • Make obsolete Windows 95, 98, and Me (the "Windows 9x" family), since Windows XP is now provided with personal systems and Windows 9x limitations are no longer relevant.* Program examples freely exploit features found only in current Windows versions, even though some programs will not operate on Windows 9x.
  • Provide enhanced coverage of threads and synchronization, including performance, scalability, and reliability considerations. Chapter 9 is new, as are some examples in Chapter 10.
  • Emphasize the increasingly important role and new features of Windows 2000 and 2003 in running high-performance, scalable, multithreaded server applications.
  • Study performance implications of different program designs, especially in multithreaded programs with synchronization and when running on symmetric multiprocessor (SMP) systems.
  • Incorporate reader and student feedback to fix defects, improve explanations, improve the organization, and address numerous details, large and small.
Organization

Chapters are organized topically so that the features required in even a single-threaded application are covered first, followed by process and thread management features, and finally network programming in a multithreaded environment. This organization allows the reader to advance logically from file systems to memory management and file mapping, and then to processes, threads, and synchronization, followed by interprocess and network communication and security. This organization also allows the examples to evolve in a natural way, much as a developer might create a simple prototype and then add additional capability. The advanced features, such as asynchronous I/O and security, appear last.

Within each chapter, after introducing the functionality area, such as process management or memory-mapped files, we discuss important Windows functions and their relationships in detail. Illustrative examples follow. Within the text, only essential parts of programs are listed; complete programs and the required include files, utility functions, and the like are in Appendix A or on the book's Web site (http://www.awprofessional.com/titles/0321256190). Throughout, we identify those features supported only by current Windows versions (XP, 2000, and 2003) but not by earlier versions such as Windows 9x and NT, which do not implement many advanced features. Each chapter suggests related additional reading and gives some exercises. Many exercises address interesting and important issues that did not fit within the normal text, and others allow the reader to explore advanced or specialized topics.

Chapter 1 is a high-level introduction to the Windows OS family and Windows. A simple example program shows the basic elements of Windows programming style and lays the foundation for more advanced Windows features. Win64 and migration issues are introduced in Chapter 1, described extensively in Chapter 16, and included throughout the book as required.

Chapters 2 and 3 deal with file systems, console I/O, file locking, and directory management. Unicode, the extended character set used by Windows, is also introduced in Chapter 2. Examples include sequential and direct file processing, directory traversal, and file archiving. Chapter 3 ends with a discussion of registry management programming, which is similar in many ways to file and directory management.

Chapter 4 introduces Windows' exception handling, including Structured Exception Handling (SEH), which will be used extensively throughout the book. Many books defer SEH to later chapters, but by introducing it early, we will be able to use SEH throughout and thus simplify some programming tasks and improve quality. Vectored exception handling, a newer feature, is also described.

Chapter 5 treats Windows' memory management and shows how to use memory-mapped files both to simplify programming and to improve performance. This chapter also covers DLLs.

Chapter 6 introduces Windows' processes, process management, and simple process synchronization. Chapter 7 then describes thread management in similar terms. Examples in each chapter show the many benefits, including program simplicity and performance, of threads and processes.

Chapters 8, 9, and 10 provide an extended, in-depth treatment of Windows' thread synchronization, one of Windows' strong features. Synchronization is a complex topic, and these chapters use extended examples and well-understood models to help readers obtain the programming and performance benefits of threads while avoiding many of the pitfalls. New material covers performance and scalability issues, which are important when building server-based applications, including those that will run on SMP systems.

Chapters 11 and 12 are concerned with interprocess and interthread communication and networking. Chapter 11 concentrates on the features that are properly part of Windows--namely, anonymous pipes, named pipes, and mailslots. Chapter 12 discusses Windows Sockets, which allow interoperability with non-Windows systems using industry-standard protocols, primarily TCP/IP. Windows Sockets, while not strictly part of the Windows API, provide for network and Internet communication and interoperability, and the subject matter is consistent with the rest of the book. A multithreaded client/server system illustrates how to use interprocess communication along with threads.

Chapter 13 describes how Windows allows server applications, such as the ones created in Chapters 11 and 12, to be converted to Windows Services that can be managed as background servers. Some small programming changes will turn the servers into services.

Chapter 14 shows how to perform asynchronous I/O using overlapped I/O with events and completion routines. You can achieve much the same thing with threads, so examples compare the different solutions for simplicity and performance. The closely related I/O completion ports are, however, necessary for scalable multithreaded servers, so this feature is illustrated with the servers created in earlier chapters. Waitable timers, which require concepts introduced earlier in the chapter, are also described.

Chapter 15 explains Windows' object security, showing, in an example, how to emulate UNIX-style file permissions. Additional examples shows how to secure processes, threads, and named pipes. Security upgrades can then be applied to the earlier examples as appropriate.

Chapter 16 concludes with a description of Win64 programming issues and how to assure that code is portable to Win64. An earlier example is then ported to Win64.

There are three appendixes. Appendix A describes the programs provided on the book's Web site and how to use them. Appendix B contains — tables that compare Windows functions with their counterparts in UNIX and the Standard C library. Appendix C compares the performance of alternative implementations of some of the examples in the text so that you can gauge the trade-offs between Windows features, both basic and advanced, and the C library.

UNIX and C Library Notes and Tables

Within the text at appropriate points, we contrast Windows style and functionality with the comparable UNIX (and Linux) and ANSI Standard C library features. As mentioned, Appendix B presents tables listing these comparable functions. This information is included because many readers are familiar with UNIX and are interested in the comparisons between the two systems. Readers without a UNIX background should feel free to skip those paragraphs in the text, which are indented and set in a smaller font.

Examples

The examples are designed for the following tasks:

  • Illustrate common, representative, and useful applications of the Windows functions.
  • Correspond to real programming situations encountered in program development, consulting, and teaching. Some of my clients and course participants have used the code examples as the bases for their own systems. During my consulting activities, I frequently encounter code that is similar to that used in the examples, and on — occasions I have seen code taken directly from the first or second edition of this book. (Feel free to do so yourself; an acknowledgment in your documentation would be greatly appreciated.) Frequently, this code occurs as part of COM or C++ objects. The examples, subject to time and space constraints, are "real-world" examples and solve "real-world" problems.
  • Emphasize how the functions actually behave and interact, which is not always as you might first expect after reading the documentation. Throughout this book, the text and the examples concentrate on interactions between functions rather than the functions themselves.
  • Grow and expand, adding new capability to a previous solution in an easy and natural manner and exploring alternative implementation techniques.
  • In the earlier chapters, many examples implement UNIX commands, such as ls, touch, chmod, and sort, showing the Windows functions in a familiar context while creating a useful set of utilities.** Different implementations of the same command will also give us an easy way to compare performance benefits available with advanced Windows features. Appendix C contains the results of these performance tests.

Examples in the early chapters are usually short, but the later chapterspresent longer examples when appropriate.

Exercises at the end of each chapter suggest alternative designs, subjects for investigation, and additional functionality that is important but beyond the book's scope. Some exercises are easy, and a few are very challenging. Frequently, clearly labeled defective solutions are provided, because fixing the bugs is an excellent way to sharpen skills.

All examples have been debugged and tested under Windows XP, 2000, and 2003. Where appropriate, they have been tested under Windows 9x and NT. Although the bulk of the development was performed on single-processor, Intelbased systems, most programs were also tested on multiprocessor systems. Theclient/server applications have been tested using multiple clients simultaneously interacting with a server. Nonetheless, there is no guarantee or assurance of program correctness, completeness, or fitness for any purpose. Undoubtedly, even the simplest examples contain defects or will fail under some conditions; such is the fate of nearly all software. I will, however, gratefully appreciate any messages regarding program defects—and, better still, fixes.

The Web Site

The book's Web site (http://www.awprofessional.com/titles/0321256190) contains a downloadable file with complete code and projects for all the book's examples, a number of exercise solutions, alternative implementations of some of the examples, instructions, and performance evaluation tests. This material will be updated periodically to include new material and corrections.

My personal Web site (http://world.std.com/~jmhart/windows.htm) contains book errata, along with additional examples, reader contributions, additional explanations, and much more. PowerPoint slides are also included and can be used for noncommercial instructional purposes. These slides have been used numerous times in professional training courses, and they are also suitable for use in college courses.

The material will be updated as required when defects are fixed and as reader input is received. If you encounter any difficulties with the programs or any material in the book, check these locations first because there may already be a fix or explanation. If that does not answer your question, feel free to send e-mail to jmhart@world.std.com.

* Nonetheless, features that do not apply to Windows 9x are noted as appropriate.
** Several commercial and open source products provide complete sets of UNIX utilities; there is no intent to supplement them. These examples, although useful, are primarily intended to illustrate the use of Windows features. A reader who is not familiar with UNIX should not, however, have any difficultyunderstanding the programs or their functionality.

Useful, Reliable, Clear Code Examples
By Joe Green
"Windows System Programming" is clearly written, with subjects presented in a logical order. The program examples tie the topics together so that you can see how the Windows API functions work in real Windows application programs. This is not an internals book; it explains the core Windows API, and the author clearly defines the book's scope.

The subject matter is very important in a lot of practical application development situations where the GUI is not an issue (this is the code "under" the GUI that does the real work). I was able to adapt two of the example programs ("JobShell" from the Process Mgt chapter and "Pipe" from the Interprocess Comm chapter) for use in a recent consulting job. Everything worked well and the changes for my particular task were easy to do, but I would not have been able to figure it out myself without spending a lot of time. I'm thinking of adapting one of the thread synchronization examples in an upcoming assignment. I looked at other books, and none of them had anything even close to these very useful examples.

By the way, the example code (download it from the URL given in the book) is clear, quite reliable (maybe it's not perfect for all I know, but what code is?), and it performs extensive error checking. The code listed in the text is usually streamlined so that the reader can see the logic without getting bogged down in error checking details (the author explains this in the text). I disagree with the March 28 reviewer about this, but maybe he was only looking at the code in the text. The code is clear, straight-forward, seldom "tricky" in any way, generally well documented, and the author goes to a lot of trouble to point out variations, other methods to solve the same problem, performance tradeoffs, and other useful and thought-provoking information. Incidentally, the coding style is compatible with professionally developed Windows code I've encountered during consulting projects.

Finally, the author maintains a web site (same as the code download URL) with corrections, updates, and a lot of additional information that is informative, helpful, and sometimes entertaining and even witty. He also responded quickly when I sent an email requesting some clarification.

So, Hart gets 5 stars for this book; it really helped me in "real world" situations. I wish more authors would write as well, take as much effort with their examples, and support their books the way this author does.

Excellant Windows system level programming
By J. Carroll
I'm an old system's programmer, and I loved this book. It provides the exact information you need if your an experienced system's coder, and just need the specifics of how to accomplish the operations on windows. Multithreading, memory mapped file i/o, process & thread management, networking, you name it, and it's in here.

I use this text hand and glove with "Windows Internals" by Russinovich. Winternals explains what needs to be done, and Hart's book describes how. This is really an excellant text.

I particularly liked Appendix "C". Sprinkled throughout the text are example programs. Then Appendix "C" compares the real world performance of running the programs. The author does an excellant job of explaining why one approach is suprior to the other, than backs it up with timing examples (on difference versions of windows, using different hardware, and even the differences between FAT & NTFS).

About the only imrpovement to the text I could suggest, is less reference to Unix/POSIX. Most systems programmers are familiar with Unix, and it helps to have previous understanding from another platform, but I think people who buy this text are looking to learn the "Windows Way". Also, the text would benefit from a deeper treatment of the Windows Security model. As it stands, a demonstration of Unix-Style permissions for NTFS is not terribly useful in the real world.

clearly written
By F. Huynh
The author does a wonderful job in explaining the fundamentals of windows systems programming. His writing style is clear and concise. This doesn't mean that he glosses over the details however, he makes a good attempt at highlighting tricky or confusing areas in the API and makes sure the reader knows what to watch out for. I reccomend this book for those wanting a good overview of the Win32/64 API. It take to notice that this book does not cover GUI in anyway.

Financial Markets and Institutions (5th Edition), by Frederic S. Mishkin, Stanley G. Eakins

Recognizing that students need more than an abstract description of financial markets and institutions as they train to become managers successfully working in, or interacting with, the financial service industry, Mishkin and Eakins examine models and concepts through the eyes of a practicing financial manager to see not onlywhy they matter, but also how they are used in the real world. In this way, students learn to place themselves in the role of decision-maker and envision how they might respond to problems and situations that will arise in their future careers. This Fifth Edition boasts expanded coverage of valuation concepts, more quantitative material, and a streamlined, finance-focused presentation. A careful examination of conflicts of interest, a concentration on the impact of new technologies, new data, and refreshing examples all serve to enhance and illuminate important concepts.

Good start
By Tim Michael
I've used some version of this book for many years now, and I've seen it evolve. I think, as other reviewers have said, that there are some simplified portions of the book, especially those parts dealing with monetary economics. There are other portions which lay out the principles as only these authors can, and those parts are extremely helpful and valuable. This book allows me to teach my notes and thoughts with a textbook serving as a reference and an introduction -- it doesn't get in my way, in other words. I use it along with several other texts, and I think it gets the job done. Students seem to like it as well, mainly for its clarity. For someone wanting to learn the basics, this is an excellent choice.

Very good for first exposure to financial markets
By A Customer
This book is not an advanced book on financial markets, but it is a good introductory book. I use this book for my undergraduate teaching. Both I and students are happy about the coverage of the book. It is well organized and well written. Improvements will be valuable in the derivatives markets and risk management areas.

Too many errors of omission and commission for a second ed.
By A Customer
Too many errors to be a useful text for a serious course in financial markets. Virtually ignores the market for mortgage backed securities. Ignores the interest on interest component of total return. Discussion of zeroes is muddled. Discussion of YTM is incomplete. Even the chapters on commercial banks and Fed policy contain the same old mistakes seen in most money and banking texts.

About the Author

Brian Levack grew up in a family of teachers in the New York metropolitan area. From his father, a professor of French history, he acquired a love for studying the past, and he knew from an early age that he too would become a historian. He received his B.A. from Fordham University in 1965 and his Ph.D. from Yale in 1970. In graduate school he became fascinated by the history of the law and the interaction between law and politics, interests that he has maintained throughout his career. In 1969 he joined the History Department of the University of Texas at Austin, where he is now the John Green Regents Professor in History. The winner of several teaching awards, Levack teaches a wide variety of courses on British and European history, legal history, and the history of witchcraft. For eight years he served as the chair of his department, a rewarding but challenging assignment that made it difficult for him to devote as much time as he wished to his teaching and scholarship. His books include The Civil Lawyers in England, 1603-1641: A Political Study (1973), The Formation of the British State: England, Scotland and the Union, 1603-1707 (1987), and The Witch-Hunt in Early Modern Europe (1987 and 1995), which has been translated into eight languages.

His study of the development of beliefs about witchcraft in Europe over the course of many centuries gave him the idea of writing a textbook on Western civilization that would illustrate a broader set of encounters between different cultures, societies, and ideologies. While writing the book, Levack and his two sons built a house on property that he and his wife, Nancy, own in the Texas hill country. He found that the two projects presented similar challenges: it was easy to draw up the design, but far more difficult to execute it. When not teaching, writing, or doing carpentry work, Levack runs along the jogging trails of Austin, and he has recently discovered the pleasures of scuba diving.

Edward Muir grew up in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains in Utah, close-by the Emigration Trail along which wagon trains of Mormon pioneers and California-bound settlers made their way westward. As a child he loved to explore the broken-down wagons and abandoned household goods left at the side of the trail and from that acquired a fascination with the past. Besides the material remains of the past, he grew up with stories of his Mormon pioneer ancestors and an appreciation for how the past continued to influence the present. During the turbulent 1960s, he became interested in Renaissance Italy as a period and a place that had been formative for Western civilization. His biggest challenge is finding the time to explore yet another new corner of Italy and its restaurants.

He received his Ph.D. from Rutgers University where he specialized in the Italian Renaissance and did archival research in Venice and Florence, Italy. He is now the Clarence L. Ver Steeg Professor in the Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University and former chair of the History Department. At Northwestern he has won several teaching awards. His books include, Civic Ritual in Renaissance Venice (Princeton, 1981); Mad Blood Stirring: Vendetta in Renaissance Italy (Johns Hopkins, 1993 and 1998); and Ritual in Early Modern Europe (Cambridge, 1997).

Some years ago Ed began to experiment with the use of historical trials in teaching and discovered that students loved them. From that experience he decided to write this textbook, which employs trials as a central feature. Ed lives beside Lake Michigan in Evanston, Illinois. His twin passions are skiing in the Rocky Mountains and rooting for the Chicago Cubs, who manage every summer to demonstrate that winning isn't everything.

Michael Maas was born in the Ohio River Valley, a community that had been a frontier outpost during the late eighteenth century. He grew up reading the stories of the early settlers and their struggles with the native peoples, and seeing in the urban fabric how the city had subsequently developed into a prosperous coal and steel town, with immigrants from all over the world. As a boy he developed a lifetime interest in the archaeology and history of the ancient Mediterranean world and began to study Latin. At Cornell University he combined his interests in cultural history and the Classical world by majoring in Classics and Anthropology. A semester in Rome clinched his commitment to these fields — and to Italian cooking. Michael went on to get his PhD in the Graduate Program in Ancient History and Mediterranean Archaeology at UC Berkeley.

He has traveled widely in the Mediterranean and the Middle East and participated in several archaeological excavations, including an underwater dig in Greece. Since 1985 he has taught ancient history at Rice University in Houston, Texas, where he founded and directs the interdisciplinary B.A. Program in Ancient Mediterranean Civilizations. He has won several teaching awards.

Maas' special area of research is Late Antiquity, the period of transition from the Classical to the Medieval worlds, which saw the collapse of the Roman Empire in western Europe and the development of the Byzantine state in the east. During his last sabbatical, he was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N. J., where he worked on his current book The Conqueror's Gift. Ethnography, Identity, and Imperial Power at the End of Antiquity (forthcoming). His other books include John Lydus and the Roman Past. Antiquarianism and Politics in the Age of Justinian (1992); Readings in Late Antiquity: A Sourcebook (2000); and Exegesis and Empire in the Early Byzantium (2003).

Maas has always been interested in interdisciplinary teaching and the encounters among different cultures. He sees The West: Encounters and Transformations as an opportunity to explain how the modern civilization that we call "the West" had its origins in the diverse interactions among many different peoples of antiquity.

Meredith Veldman grew up in the western suburbs of Chicago, in a close-knit, closed-in Dutch Calvinist community. In this immigrant society, history mattered: the "Reformed tradition" structured not only religious beliefs but also social identity and political practice. This influence certainly played some role in shaping Veldman's early fascination with history. But probably just as important were the countless World War II re-enactment games she played with her five older brothers. Whatever the cause, Veldman majored in history at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and then earned a Ph.D. in modern European history, with a concentration in nineteenth- and twentieth-century Britain, from Northwestern University in 1988.

As Associate Professor of History at Louisiana State University, Veldman teaches courses in nineteenth- and twentieth-century British history and twentieth-century Europe, as well as the second half of "Western Civ." In her many semesters in the Western Civ classroom, Veldman tried a number of different textbooks but found herself increasingly dissatisfied. She wanted a text that would convey to beginning students at least some of the complexities and ambiguities of historical interpretation, introduce them to the exciting work being done now in cultural history, and, most importantly, tell a good story. The search for this textbook led her to accept the offer made by Levack, Maas, and Muir to join them in writing The West: Encounters and Transformations.

The author of Fantasy, the Bomb, and the Greening of Britain: Romantic Protest, 1945-1980 (1984), Veldman is also the wife of a Methodist minister and the mother of two young sons. They reside in Baton Rouge, where Veldman finds coping with the steamy climate a constant challenge. She and her family recently returned from Manchester, England, where they lived for three years and astonished the natives by their enthusiastic appreciation of English weather.

By L. Freytag
Biographies of figures from the ancient world are often written, in the words of one of my old professors, "as if the author were being paid by the word." Lindsay Adam's new biography of Alexander the Great manages to avoid that trap. This book demonstrates that scholarship and readability are not contradictory. Adam's scholarly grounding is top-notch, but he does not clutter up his narrative with the usual wordy footnotes and passages in classical Greek. Both the professional historian and the history fan will find much to enjoy here. The author handles the complex and fascinating story of Alexander's conquests and their legacy with considerable grace and mastery. The professor looking for a text for undergraduates and the reader simply interested in a retelling of one of history's most compelling careers would both profit from this book.

Good book, easy read, interesting life
By Red Faitholl
I never would have read this book if i didnt have to, but once again, im glad i did. This book is really no different than anything about Alexander, except its short, easy, and it covers the important points of his life.

If you have to read it- dont worry its not too bad, and if you ever wanted to know about Alexander the Great, this book is perfect for you, both academically and casually

Class textbook
By Istariel
Bought for a world history class, this book was actually enjoyable outside of the assignments requiring it. As a history book alone, it is a fairly easy read, but has long chapters, so you are warned.

FINALLY - An Easy to Understand Color Management Book
By V. Maciulski
This is the most thorough, and easy-to-understand book on color management that I've ever seen. They start with some color theory, but don't bog down on the technical, like some other books I've seen.
They explain the color management and profile process, then tell you how to build profiles for various devices. They spend six (!) chapters on building and editing profiles. There are separate chapters for measurement & calibration, displays, input devices, output devices, etc. As an example, they cover the steps and procedures to profile RGB inkjet printers, CMYK inkjets, CMYK color lasers, CMYK solid inks, Dye-sub printers, and much more.
That process has always seemed like a bunch of mumbojumbo to me, but I found their explanations to be easy to follow. They explain the need for the right lighting in the room where you proof and print and how color shifts can occur.
Then, they deal with applications and workflow. Chapter twelve covers the Adobe Color architecture. subsequent chapters deal with separate apps like Freehand, Corel Draw, QuarkXPress and PDF.
They explain Colorsync and ICM color management systems. And there is a nice discussion about WHEN in the process to convert the color profile of an image.
The appendices have some very useful info on profiles and workflows.
It's a bit pricey, but if you NEED color management, it is worth it.

A must have reference!
By Andrew D. Rodney
First, I have no idea who William X is but his review is a slam to Mr. Murphy and just useless dribble. I know Chris lives in Bolder so I have to assume this is a person with some kind of agenda towards Chris.
Now onto the book. I am a color geek myself although I try not to get into all the discussions like how many ICC Profiles will fit on a pin. I have purchased nearly every book on the subject of color, color theory and color management. I have been reading Frasers, Buntin and Murphy's posts on the Apple ColorSync list for years and have literally hundreds of posts from each archived. Real World Color Management is the best book on the subject bar none. It's VERY easy to read and well explained. Even the first few chapters on color theory are so well explained that I not only picked up some good concepts I didn't know, I learned how to explain them to others in a much more concise manner. For those that feel that color management and computer imaging are moving at such a pace that no book can be useful for any length of time, I would say that RWCM is worth the price of admission just for the foundation in color and computer theory it presents in the first 100 or so pages.
There is a huge wealth of information that I've never seen anywhere else! The areas in the book discussing how to evaluate the quality of ICC profiles is worth it's weight in gold. The various chapters covering specific software products and how they deal with color management is invaluable. What makes this book so wonderful is it's tone. It has a sense of humor (so needed with this kind of topic). It doesn't look down on the reader and more importantly, it's clear and to the point. There's virtually no math to make your head explode.
I happen to know all three authors (some more than others) and I am proud that they have finally achieved the final goal of producing what I believe is the definitive book on the subject of color management. Anyone that works with computer graphics or produces output from a computer should have this book.

Best color management book
By R. Hettinger
This is more readable, information rich, and practical than Tim Grey's well-written "Color Confidence" which had set a high standard.

Like most books on the subject, it starts with a color theory chapter. Besides being a pleasure to read, it is almost certain to teach something you didn't already know. Even a science whiz will be impressed at how gently, thoroughly, and coherently the topics are brought together.

Most of the remaining chapters can be read in isolation. Many will immediately focus on a chapter relating to their specific software and then proceed to the all important workflow chapter.

For those buying tools, the book offers excellent coverage of the major products including hardware (densiometers, colorimeters, spectrophotometers, targets, monitors, printers, and inks), profiling packages (Gretag-Macbeth, Monaco, etc), and ICC visualization/editing tools (ColorThink and such).

The book empowers you to make thoughtful choices on every Photoshop setting (black-points, colorspaces, rendering intents, etc). Also, the section on evaluating profiles is excellent. This topic is usually omitted from other books on the subject.

All in all, I give this one an A+.

American Destiny: Narrative of a Nation Concise Third Edition, Volume One Mark C. Carnes and John A. Garraty

With the political history of the nation as its organizational framework, American Destiny: Narrative of a Nation describes the development and growth of the United States as the product of the myriad actions, ideas, and forces of the immense variety of individuals and groups who together comprise the American people. In richly detailed prose, the book examines the political, social, economic, and cultural developments that have shaped America. This elegantly written concise text offers a lower-price alternative to traditional American history survey textbooks, while maintaining the efficacy of a full-color map and image program.

Hallmark Features

• “Debating the Past” essays, which appear in each chapter, introduce students to historiographical debates, probing such provocative questions as “Was the American Revolution rooted in class struggle?” (Ch.4), “Did the frontier change women’s roles?” (Ch.11), “Did immigrants assimilate?”.
• “Re-Viewing the Past” essays examine recent feature films dealing with some incident in or aspect of history and compare the screen portrayals to actual events. These essays remind readers that all historical narratives are interpretations and should be read–and seen–with a critical eye.

New to the Third Edition

• NEW! Full-color format enhances the value of the maps and graphs and gives the book a vibrant appearance.
• NEW! Each chapter begins with a compelling new essay that connects the chapter topic to issues that directly affect student’s lives. For example, Chapter 5 begins with a discussion of the copyright provisions of the Constitution, debated over two centuries ago, which now prevent students from freely downloading songs on the Internet. In Chapter 28, the essay explains how the decision to use aptitude tests to select officers during World War II led to the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), an obligatory rite of passage for many college students today.
• NEW! Each chapter has been revised to reflect new scholarship, to offer new perspectives, and to streamline and sharpen the prose.
• NEW! Questions for Discussion are included in the “Re-Viewing the Past” features to spark class discussion and analysis or to prompt writing assignments.

About the Author

Mark C. Carnes received his undergraduate degree from Harvard and his Ph.D. in history from Columbia University, where he studied and trained with Professor John A. Garraty. The Ann Whitney Olin Professor History at Barnard College, Columbia University, Professor Carnes has chaired both the departments of History and American Studies at Barnard. In addition to this textbook, Carnes and Garraty have co-authored Mapping America’s Past: A Historical Atlas and are co-general editors of the 24-volume American National Biography, for which they were awarded the Waldo Leland Prize of the American Historical Association, the Darmouth Prize of the American Library Association, and the Hawkins Prize of the American Association of Publishers. In addition, Carnes has published numerous books in American social and cultural history, including Past Imperfect: History According to the Movies (1995), Novel History: Historians and Novelists Confront America’s Past (and Each Other) (2001), and Invisible Giants: 50 Americans That Shaped the Nation but Missed the History Books (2002). Carnes also created “Reacting to the Past”, which won the Theodore Hesburgh Award, sponsored by TIAA-CREF, as the outstanding pedagogical innovation of 2004.

“Garraty preaches a particular doctrine on historical writing, expounding on the details of a complex process whereby the murky abstractions of the past are distilled into clean, clear narrative. He insists that the writer’s sole duty is to readers. This literary alchemy is all the more wondrous for being so devoid of artifice,” Carnes observes.

John A. Garraty. Holding a Ph.D. from Columbia University and an L.H.D. from Michigan State University, Professor Garraty is Gouverneur Morris Professor Emeritus of History at Columbia. He is the author, co-author, and editor of scores of books and articles, among them biographies of Silas Wright, Henry Cabot Lodge, Woodrow Wilson, George W. Perkins, and Theodore Roosevelt. Along with Mark Carnes, he is co-editor of the American National Biography. Garraty has also contributed a volume–The New Commonwealth–to the New American Nation series and edited Quarrels That Shaped the Constitution. He was a member of the Board of Directors of American heritage magazine and served as both vice president and head of the teaching division of the American Historical Association. His areas of research interest include the Gilded age, unemployment (in a historical sense), and the Great Depression of the 1930s. Of his collaboration with Carnes on The American Nation, Garraty says, “Although this volume is the work of two authors, it is as nearly the product of a single historical sensibility as is possible. Mark’s scholarly specialization in cultural and social issues, especially gender, complements mine in politics and the economy.  The book has benefited, too, from his special interest in postwar America. Over the many years of our collaborations, one of our favorite topics of discussion has been the craft of historical writing. We share a commitment to clarity and conciseness. We strive to avoid jargon and verbiage. We believe that while the political history of the nation provides a useful narrative framework, its people are what give the story meaning.”

Not a great text for learning
By Robert
(1.5 stars) This was required for AMH2020 and the teacher agreed - it isn't among the best texts. The authors' over-stylized narrations miss their mark and the valuable points become lost. Furthermore, it's sporatic in its presentation and often only glimpses certain important events. All in all, not recommended if avoidable.

Narrow is Understatement
By TheRealDarknerd
I'm forced to use this book in my U.S. History course. I find the book narrowly covers what is the territories of U.S. and before that the 13 colonies. It fails to really look at the people that live here, regardless of today's borders, and the origins of these people. As a person of diverse backgrounds (Latino-Native-German-Scottish), I find this book excessively limiting (if not discriminatory), as it seems to go out of its way to exclude American Indians, and we really do not get to understand European origins and cultures as they relate to America and our identity today.

In the American Revolution, there's no coverage of Indian support of the Revolution, and later we are gifted with politicians gaining political power through promulgating their role in killing native tribes or leaders, but there's no coverage of the referenced battles involved. The most appalling was coverage of Andrew Jackson, how he violated his Oath of Office by ignoring Supreme Court order and forcibly move Cherokees off their property (some accounts are half of race perished in forced march across mountains in winter without provisions or blankets). This is glossed over and omitted.

Anyhow, this book is comprehensive in certain topics, such as literature, religion, or complex experimental philosophies, but ignores the people and context in which they live, especially American Indians and historical Europeans. For an alternative on the colonies, I would recommend American Colonies, The Settling of North American. Other books are written for other time periods, like So Far from God: The U.S. War With Mexico, 1846-1848 for Mexican-American war.

Very Biased
By pg-22
Very biased American History textbook. Narrative style often makes it possible for the authors to hide certain controversies from the reader, or to introduce only one side of the story. This narrative definitely comes from the word "narrow". Do not recommend.
