This volume offers students a panoramic overview of the worldwide development of film, from the first movements captured on celluloid, to the early Mack Sennett and Charlie Chaplin shorts, through the studio heyday of the 1930s and 1940s and the "Hollywood Renaissance" of the 1960s and 1970s, to the pictures and their technology appearing in the multiplexes and sound palaces of today. This new edition, which has been revised and rewritten to reflect current scholarship, recent industry developments, and new films and filmmakers, represents an accurate, scrupulous updating of a classic. Extremely valuable
By MrWhooHoo
My accidental encounter with an earlier edition of this book was the catalyst for my taking up film studies. The book is a clear, well written and systematically organized history of movies. It has a comprehensive and up to date bibliography and filmography. Chapters are chronological in sequence, but are organized around a particular theme. The authors introduce major influences in the cinema (whether directors, 'schools', actors or events), identify principal directors and films, and analyse major issues and advances. It is an excellent introduction to the history of movies and great jumping off point for further, more specialised study. It is refreshingly free from post-modernist jargon and abstractions. If you want a comprehensive introduction which is also a good read, I recommend this book most highly.

Great book

This book was required for my History of Film class but I think I'll be keeping it for myself instead of returning it. It's full of short, concise descriptions of some of the important points in film starting at the beginning. I've referenced it in every paper I've written for the class, must buy.

Long time Classic text retains Credibility
By stuart lenig
Though old, (now in it's 11th edition) Mast and Kawin's text remains an excellent introduction to the study of film history. Gerald Mast began the text in the seventies when the academic study of film history and style was in its infancy. The text was taken over by Mast's student Bruce Kawin when the older professor passed on. The text has lost none of its authority and clarity over time. The authors carefully staked out that their work would cover American, notable, ideologically important, technologically notable, business-manifested works of principally the Hollywood Studio system with a nod towards the influence of auteur theory (or author or master creator theory, made popular by notable American critic Andrew Sarris in the the seventies, the time of this text's genesis). Admittedly there are newer approaches than historicism, but Mast and Kawin have done such a thorough comprehensive and even-handed job of explaining the creation, evolution, development and expansion of the American film aesthetic, market, business, and technological innovation, that there is little that anyone could add to their clear and multi-faceted perspective. Again, the the film has had to go back in time and reinsert notable marginalized figures (Dorothy Arzner, Ida Lupino, Oscar Micheaux, Watson and Weber) but it is remarkable how comprehensive, strong, and varied the authors coverage remains. The book does not scrimp on citing influences and French, German, Russian, and Asian films receive significant chapters and mention for their influence on the creation and reshaping of American forms (notably the contribution of German ex-patriots working in Hollywood after the rise of Hitler to create the American horror film industry). Overall, still the ur-text of American film history and a great understanding of the field can be gained by reading the whole story. Lots of example films to visit in each chapter ending a clear glossary of film technology terms add to the book's value. Very readable, knowledge packed, and comprehensive.
