Informative and Easy to Understand

Easy to understand, this makes a great textbook. The concepts, graphs, and formulas are well explained. Also, it includes short stories outlining real-world situations where the book's concepts are seen in action.

Excellent primer for non-economics health service majors

This is one of only two health economics textbooks that, in my experience, dares to veer away from classical theory and address the real world of the U.S. healthcare system. Even though some data are old by now, the citations are up-to-date, and there are excellent discussions of health insurance, the nursing shortage, healthcare price elasticity, and prescription drugs. The book spends time on patient behavior and managed care with real wold examples. Prof. Johnson-Lans gets top marks for this. However, my copy was poorly printed on low weight paper which absorbed pen ink and highlighter, and which produced poor scanning results. Nonetheless is use it extensively in my doctoral classes.

not really a primer...

Needed this book for Health Economics Class. I am a Nursing student, but the course was one of two options for an elective. I think this book was probably an easy read for the Economic students in the class, it was hard to understand some concepts for me. I was hoping as a "primer" it would be simple, but I guess economics is not simple. The information is decent, the chapters aren't necessarily very long, and it gave me a decent understanding of health care and economics.
