The best guide to clear writing

I taught writing for 10 years at the University of California, and tried a variety of books. The course was oriented toward clear, effective writing -- writing as communication, rather than writing as "little golden thoughts of me." No book teaches these skills as well as Williams, none is even close. There are books that can teach how to write one clear sentence, and Williams does this too. But "Style" takes the next step and shows how to organize a sequence of sentences in a way that makes it easy for your readers to follow an argument or understand an explanation.
The course produced a real improvement in student writing, an improvement that they could see and appreciate. Most of them said it was among the most useful courses they had taken at college.

It's like a favorite teacher

I am an independent corporate trainer who teaches people to write better at work. When my students ask me for good books to learn even more, this is the first book I mention. I tell them, "If you are a good writer and you want to be a very good writer, get this book."
I also tell them several other things about the book. First, it is not a book of lists like the excellent resource, The Elements of Style. Instead, it's a challenging textbook that is informative and compelling from beginning to end. Second, it teaches a novel way to keep readers interested in what you are writing. Basically it's narrative, or story telling, within each sentence. Third, it provides guidance on advanced topics such as emphasis, elegance, and ethics. Topics like these might seem esoteric or irrelevant, but the author makes them easy to understand and shows why they are useful, and he does it in a way that is fun to read.
This book is one of those few textbooks that you will remember the same way you remember that favorite teacher. Like that teacher, it brought you to a new level of knowledge, and it did it with humor and style.
I rated this book 5 stars because I think it is superior in all categories for a textbook: useful content, insightful author, clear exposition, skillful publishing, and reasonable price.

Best of the Best

It is difficult to know where to begin. I am writing a brief review of this book to counter the negative reviews I read. I was stunned: I expected to read rave reviews of Professor Williams' book. Without wanting to offend anyone, they are for the most part so far off the mark I would think they were talking about another book.

One author mentioned Strunk and White's book as the ideal. As much as I loved this book when I was young, it seems slightly old-fashioned, even quaint now, and encourages an attention to rules that seems superficial. On the other hand, Williams' book takes advantage of the more systematic, deep approach to language, rhetoric and communication that was developed by the best linguists of the 20th century. There is a good reason that this book has had so many editions for such a long period of time (now in the 8th edition). It is because it is based on an insight that touches a deep truth about communicating in writing: that subjects and verbs, or characters and their actions as Williams helpfully calls them at times, form the basic elements of the English sentence. It is Williams' ability to draw out the implications of this simple truth that gives his book its genius. Emerson once said that rhythm is the deep structure of the universe (he said it better but I can't remember his words); I feel that Emerson would smile in agreement at Williams thesis: that it is an understanding of the significance of the basic character/action relationship between the subject and verb that gives a sentence its strength and, on a "higher" level, the same systole/diastole relationship between theme and discussion that gives a paragraph its strength.

I am by no means doing Professor Williams' book justice, and I would not have written this review if the others had not been so, well, wrong. His writing bad? On the contrary, good writing, as Williams points out in a useful addition to one of the later editions of his book on controlling longer sentences, does not mean Dick and Jane type sentences, and he does not allow himself to fall into Strunk and White's tendency to oversimplify in explaining his ideas. I am now directing an English language program at a major university in Thailand after teaching English at Indiana University for 20 years, and I was recently asked to teach a graduate course on writing. What book did I first reach for in looking for the most substantial, concrete, practical and useful lessons on writing so that my students would not be exposed to the usual platitudes on omitting needless words and relying on your taste to be your guide? Professor Williams' book of course. It is the best of the best and will reward you endlessly as you apply his basic insights in your own writing.

About the Author
Peter N. Stearns is Provost and University Professor at George Mason University. Since 1967, he has served as editor-in-chief of The Journal of Social History.His numerous books include World History in Documents;American Behavioral History;and Anxious Parents.

Stuart B. Schwartz is the George Burton Adams Professor of History and chair of the Council on Latin American and Iberian Studies at Yale University. His many books include "All Can Be Saved: Religious Tolerance and Salvation in the Iberian Atlantic World."

MARC JASON GILBERT is Professor of History at North Georgia College and State University and a University System of Georgia Board of Regents Distinguished Professor of Teaching and Learning.

Michael Adas is Abraham E. Voorhees Professor of History and Board of Governors' Chair at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. He is the author most recently of Dominance by Design: Technological Imperatives and America's Civilizing Mission.

The Best In Its Field

I've been reading and comparing a few global history texts, and this one is in another class. If you're wanting a chronological narrative treading the traditional origins, greek, egyptian, indus valley . . . pattern then this text will not please you. If you're after a well written and presented text combining a good synthesis of fact with thought provoking analysis then this IS for you! I can see perhaps why lecturers might go for other more factual texts if they want to look at the global past in different terms to this one, however I think they can't go wrong with the themes Stearns and co. explore. Its got that perfect balance of fact and analysis. The boxed features and lengthy document extracts fit in well, and the lists of sources are well worthwhile.
So yes, you WILL learn a lot from this book because instead of just providing a series of events, people, terms and dates to rote learn it will get you thinking about the themes of global history, and encourage you to compare, contrast and evaluate. Its also one of the few "World History" texts that isn't a Western Civilization history with a few extra chapters thrown in. It really looks at the whole world with a fresh view, including a variety of cultures and experiences. In the Classical era you'll recieve valuable insights into nomadic peoples, providing the opportunity to understand differing means of organising society and allowing worthwhile comparisons that actually enhance understanding the more well trodden ground of Greece, Rome etc. Other fascinating coverage in this vein includes chapters about migration and the spread of peoples (Africans, Slavs and Polynesians), a whole chapter on the Mongol empire and the independence and nationhood movements of Latin America. I reiterate that these other perspectives are introduced in a way which enhances the overall understanding of world history, and are certainly not arbitary "pc" insertions. The authors do not shirk from showing the rise of the west, and the positives and negatives of imperialism. However it also allows us to see the limitations, and non-inevitability of this rise.
If you insist on reading a solely factual survey text, Traditions and Encounters by Bentley and Ziegler will do a great job, however for any student or enthusiast of World History, this book will open your eyes to new perspectives and really encourage you to engage your braincells!

Serious Problems

I have this book for AP World history, and I have read Michael Adas' (one of the authors of the book) essay on the "new" world history. The "new" world history emphasizes analysis and comparison between different civilizations, unlike the "old" history which emphasizes comprehensiveness and rote. This book does indeed teach along the lines of the "new" history, and I appreciate that it does not tread into the Euro-centrism or exceptionalism of America that most World History books diverge into.

However, I have some serious problems with this book. While the authors analyze many aspects of each civilization, I find them to be excessively politically correct. And while I find the political correctness irritating, that is not my biggest problem with this book.

My biggest problem is that this textbook is laden with factual errors. After reading just two chapters, I found dozens of errors, especially in the chapter on the Aztecs. Therefore, I do not know whether I can rely on this book as a source of information.

I hope Stearns et al. fix their mistakes. It is important to look at history in an analytical way, but one cannot analyze incorrect facts.

Run, Run as fast as you can!

I am a World History AP teacher (10th grade) that is forced to use this book. I teach sophomore's and this book makes a lot of assumptions that students should know certain things, which sometimes they do- but not all of them. And it's a very confusing read. We've just finished Ch 4 over Greece & Rome. And in one chapter he covers Greece, Persia, Hellenistic culture and Rome and of course it's not in order he writes it by theme and flips between cultures. It's been very confusing for my students to read all on one page about the Roman Republic, Greece, Persia, Roman Empire, Persia, Greece, etc. It's rotten!! After reading it some of my kids (even the smart ones) weren't sure which was first historically the Roman Republic or Roman Empire. This book is a difficult read, I have to supplement a lot of the reading with other resources because they don't understand what Stearns is talking about. I would not recommend anyone willingly read this on their own- only if you're forced to in class, and then pray that you can have someone explain the main ideas! Maybe later versions are easier, but version 3 is NOT good.

About the Author
Richard De Veaux holds degrees in Civil Engineering (B.S.E. Princeton), Mathematics (A.B.Princeton), Physical Education (M.A. Stanford; Specialization in Dance) and Statistics (Ph.D., Stanford). He has taught at the Wharton School, the Princeton University School of Engineering, and, since 1994, has been a professor in the Mathematics and Statistics Department of Williams College. He has won numerous teaching awards including a "Lifetime Award for Dedication and Excellence in Teaching" from the Engineering Council at Princeton. He has won both the Wilcoxon and Shewell awards (twice) from the American Society for Quality and was elected fellow of the American Statistical Association in 1998. Dick was Program Chair for the 2001 Joint Statistics Meeting in Atlanta (Aug. 2001). Dick has been a consultant for nearly 20 years for such companies as Hewlett-Packard, Alcoa, First USA Bank, Dupont, Pillsbury, Rohm and Haas, General Electric, and Chemical Bank.

Paul Velleman has taught statistics at Cornell University for 22 years. He holds an A.B. from Dartmouth College in Mathematics and Social Science, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Princeton University in Statistics, where he studied with John Tukey. He is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association, past Chair of its Statistical Computing Section, and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He has been awarded the EDUCOM medal for innovative uses of computers in teaching statistics. He is the co-author of the book ABC's of Exploratory Data Analysis. He is the author and designer of the multimedia statistics CD-ROM, ActivStats, and the developer of the award-winning statistics program, Data Desk, and theinternet site, Data And Story Library (DASL), which provides datasets for teaching statistics.

Richard D. De Veaux is an internationally known educator and lecturer. He has taught at the Wharton School and the Princeton University School of Engineering, where he won a "Lifetime Award for Dedication and Excellence in Teaching." Since 1994, he has been Professor of Statistics at Williams College. During 2006-2007 he returned to Princeton as the William R. Kenan Visiting Professor for Distinguished Teaching. Dick has won both the Wilcoxon and Shewell awards from the American Society for Quality. He is a fellow of the American Statistical Association. Dick is also well known in industry, where over 20 years he has consulted for such companies as Hewlett-Packard, Alcoa, DuPont, Pillsbury, General Electric, and American Express. Because of some conversations he had with Mickey Hart while Hart was doing research for his book, Planet Drum, Dick has often been called the "Official Statistician for the Grateful Dead." Dick holds degrees from Princeton University in Civil Engineering (B.S.E.) and Mathematics (A.B.) and from Stanford University in Dance Education (M.A.) and Statistics (Ph.D.) where he studied with Persi Diaconis. His research focuses on the analysis of large data sets and data mining in science and industry. In his spare time he is an avid cyclist and swimmer. He also is the founder and bass for the "Diminished Faculty," an a cappella Doo-Wop quartet at Williams College. He was once a professional dancer and teaches Modern Dance during Winter Study at Williams. Dick is the father of four children. Paul F. Velleman has an international reputation for innovative Statistics education. He is the author and designer of the multimedia statistics CD-ROM ActivStats, for which he wasawarded the EDUCOM Medal for innovative uses of computers in teaching statistics, and the ICTCM Award for Innovation in Using Technology in College Mathematics. Paul coauthored (with David Hoaglin) ABCs of Exploratory Data Analysis. Paul has taught Statistics at Cornell University since 1975. His research often deals with statistical graphics and data analysis methods. Paul is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Out of class, Paul sings baritone in a barbershop quartet. He is the father of two boys. David E. Bock taught mathematics at Ithaca High School for 35 years. He has taught Statistics at Ithaca High School, Tompkins-Cortland Community College, Ithaca College, and Cornell University. Dave has won numerous teaching awards, including the MAA's Edyth May Sliffe Award for Distinguished High School Mathematics Teaching (twice), Cornell University's Outstanding Educator Award (three times), and has been a finalist for New York State Teacher of the Year. Dave holds degrees from the University at Albany in Mathematics (B.A.) and Statistics/Education (M.S.) Dave has been a reader for the AP Statistics exam, serves as a Statistics consultant to the College Board, and leads workshops and institutes for AP Statistics teachers. He is currently K-12Education and Outreach Coordinator and a senior lecturer for the Mathematics Department at Cornell University. Dave relaxes by biking and hiking. He and his wife have enjoyed many days camping across Canada and through the Rockies. They have a son, a daughter, and twin granddaughters.

Not what I had hoped for

This solutions manual doesn't follow the text. Some of the problems are available but, many are not. The problems that are in the solutions manual are not always in the text and may be numbered differently.

Excellent Book! Full of useful information that is made simple by step by step insructions. Great information for someone who understands the basic tools of Photoshop, but wants to create more prfessional looking photos. Wonderful examples that inspire new ideas and twists on classic pictures! Highly Recommended!

After reading Kelby's book "the photoshop elements 3 book for digital photographers" I just had to have this book. I am enjoying it as much as the first book. I enjoy reading the humourous prelude to each chapter and then we get down to business. Beautiful pictures are included with step by step instruction, all in colour. It's very easy to understand and leads you along. You can skip around the book and do not need to read it from the start as each set of instructions include the full instructions.

Many Unanswered Questions

I read the book cover to cover while using it as a companion tutor to an on line dslr course. I found many of the steps not complete. I had basic questions on basic elements of PSE 3.0 and didn't find any mention of them in the book or index. I was left "wanting" for my answers on the basic of uses in Organizer and Editor.

Worst book for starters

This is the required text book at Santa Clara University and I can't overemphasize how badly the book is written. The questions and problems are not directly related to the content in that chapter. He refers to pictures a few chapters back easily. The way the material is presented is just impossible to grasp. In some of the problems, he gives the value of a variable and asks a question about what is the value of that variable.

Excellent book that explains concepts clearly

I am afraid that people who cannot understand this book have low IQs or poor reading skills. They are not qualified to read this book. Do not expect a first-grader to evaluate a university professor.

This is an excellent book. It clearly explains major concepts in the macroeconomics. With the help of this book, now I am able to understand many economic issues. I can discern some nonsense in daily discussions. Do not listen to anyone who talks about economics issues but still cannot understand this book.

This book is Ok; Clear definitions and example explanations. Doesn't matter that it's old edition, the macroeconomics concept is the same, so you can use this edition instead of the expensive new one.
